REF: Prospect Park, Brooklyn banks...

Yo Doug! These were banks that were built out of skatelite and set up in the Prospect Park, Brooklyn, back in November '02, for the RED BULL URBAN WAVES BANKED SLALOM CONTEST. They were taken down promptly after the contest and loaded into a truck supposedly to be used for future Banked Slalom contests throughout the country, hopefully in '03....though I have not heard anything....does Hackett or Olson know anything else about this...will it occur again in'03? Go to Owl's Head Park to sk8 the concrete banks and bowls there. Enjoy!

Hey Lenny, your wheels should be fine, although it is definately easier to slide with harder wheels, I have used Kyrpto's 70mm/78a, Surf One 65mm/80a, and Powell Cruisers 65mm/80a and I liked carving hard on hills with them and they definately slide. Definately try to make your own gloves before purchasing them. I brought a pair of these sliding gloves that had a review in ILB mag awhile back and they were total crap! They ripped apart in one session and I paid $50 for them, total garbage. Hugh has good instructions on how to make your own gloves for a quarter of the price that you will pay for pre-made ones. Check the links for hugh's page, hope this helps. Later Skater!

Sliding Hints?

I was thinking of taking further advantage of some of the hills around here by picking up sliding. Can anyone offer any suggestions on this? I skate the 38" Bulldog and right now have 78a Road Riders. Should I put on my harder wheels (94a BDS)? Is it worth buying gloves or should I make them? Any general suggestions?
Thanks.

Yep, busted my a@# on that ditch on Ft. Huachuca. I had an old board and hadn't been skating in years and walked right up and dropped in. The board hung up and I thought I busted my knee. The ditch I posted about is off post. There are ditches all over AZ. Lucky dogs that live or lived there.

Chris and anyone else wondering about lansdowne, It looks like that session won't be going down because of the snow. I am up here in PA right now and we still have a lot of snow. I called my brother back home in Maryland and he said they still have quite a bit also. I'll find out for sure and let you know!

I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca back in '82-83. There was an drainage ditch on the post I use to skate. I think it was on the main drag going towards the intel school.

I was out in Sierra Vista about 10 years ago and skated a real rough ditch but it had potential if you had softer wheels. Maybe if somebody painted it, the walls might be a bit smoother. The shape included multi level ditch sections.

Yo! Thanks for all of the info on Lancaster. I will be checking it out for sure. Usually I am a ditch and 70's park skater, but I am interested in checking out the feel of a full pipe and the newer concrete parks. I am not too worried about how well it is built for now. I'm used to hopping cracks and branches in ditches, so this may be a nice change. Thanks again. I will let you know how it goes when I pay the park a visit!

hey Match, or anyone else who plans on going to Lancaster to skate the fullpipe/park ,if you are coming from any distance you might want to try contacting Lancaster parks and recreations to make sure it's open.I was there on the 2nd of Jan. and it was locked. There was some moisture and a little snow that could have been cleaned up and dried in no time at all.But with no park ranger to be found to let me in to do said clean up I left not wanting to risk getting a fine for jumping the fence. When the park is clean you will find what could possibly be the worst pipe ever built for skating.Lumpy and beginning to show small cracks already. The snake run is far from perfect also ,with inconsistant trannies, and pseudo hips that act like speed bumps. But I would still recommend checking it out when the weathers nice, the snake run can be a ball to blast around in on any size board long or short. But if it's fullpipes you want just pack up and go to Louisville.

Which Blood Bowl do you guys know of?...Because theres 2 in Columbus that are both called the same thing...theres one down on Campus of OSU, and theres one in Upper Arlington on the corner of Lane Road and Riverside Drive(Route 33).
I haven't seen the one on Riverside. Ya got some pics longskater?

Sorry they arent anywhere close to you...I live in Arizona. I know what you are talking about though, but I am having a little trouble doing it. The banks look similar to Indianschool, or the Bear in New Mexico, from what I haev seen in pictures, except they are flat. I guess I should just practice until I get it.

erik,
Snap pump the transition. In other words, right when you hit the transition pump real quick with your legs so it looks like you are snapping your knees up the transition. After carving or kickturning the wall do the same snap pump on the way down (right at and through the tranny). It will look like you are snapping your knees toward the flat. You should be able to keep up your speed, wall height, and momentum for minutes at a time or when you get too tired.
By the way, where are these banks you speak of? Near Washington DC I hope?

I have a question to anyone who skates banks a lot. I mainly downhill, or just cruise around soulcarving, but today I found some pretty nice banks. They are about 15-20 ft deep and they have nice transitions, but my only problem is that I cant keep up enough momentum. They are flat, by that I mean they are dug level with the earth, so there is no grade. Is there a way to keep momentum up so that I can drop in from one side go to the top of the other(I can do this), then back to the other side....back and forth?

Lancaster Park in Lancaster, PA has a full pipe. The rest of the park never lived up to its' design plans. If all you want to do is ride a fullpipe, then go there but be prepared to see one of the worst built concrete parks in the nation. Lancaster is as sad as the crap wood parks built on tennis courts. No flow, bad trannies, no lips to grind, and worst of all blind corners with kids on rollerblades. In about 10 - 20 years when all the wood parks have rotted away, Lancaster will be an odd relic of bad skatepark design. Then it might be a fun place to skate as long as the scurge of roller blades has died off.
