On 8/3/2004 Mike Maysey wrote in from United States  (67.225.nnn.nnn)

Yo check this out.!...here's something for the tabloids. I am no longer a NorCal resident! I'm sitting here at Mr. Steve 'the professor' Evans computer in SoCal. Yes it was a sudden change, but you know what, if things don't happen suddenly for me they don't happen at all. I'm going to be living down here and going to Brooks College for an AS in Graphic Design. I met with a few people at the school yesterday and am now just waiting to see if they accept me and if my financial aid will go through.

I couldn't be more stoked. Evans, Attila and I had a really fun practice on Sunday at a great spot just a little south of here. I'm looking forward to redialing in my boards and my technique again while practicing with the most feared team in slalom today...SSS. Billy Wahl has even agreed to take me surfing in some water that won't require a wetsuit! Woohoo!! No wetsuits, it's been about 3 years since I surfed with no wetsuit. I haven't yet gotten a job but I sold my car just before leaving SF so the pressure is not on just yet for finding work...but I'm looking.

Anyway, that's the haps. NorCal turned SoCal.

Watch out Worlds...

Yo Sherm...

That just popped out cause I was thinking I didn't want to declare OPEN. When I saw yer face, I knew I was talkin' pure Donkey Kong. I KNOW you're fast, and be warned... I'm on your tail buddy! Hope you're at Breck, cause you always bring the stoke with you. That's the fuel that keeps me coming to the races.

La Costa Vibe and Breck or BUST!!!!!
On 7/31/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (69.19.nnn.nnn)

Great question John,

I haven't checked in since returning home, so first and foremost I'd like to thank Bill Ackerman from Bill's Wheels for his generous ongoing sponsorship... I would never have been able to attend so many of these awesome events had the fates not somehow hooked he and I up. What a blessing... Thanks so very, very much Bill! Many thanks also to Rick Howell and the entire extended ICK family and Badlands crew.

The buzz before La Costa is alway intense, and since it didn't happen last year, it was a gift from the skate gods to have one last contest there. I'd like to thank Lynn Hill and the La Costa Boys for graciously putting on this epic event. I'll never forget the cursed look on Steve Sherman's face when I asked him if he was riding open or pro. Classic... I'm really glad they went with a qualifying based seeding for the A and B pros instead of a 'declaration' process, although there were some suprises as to who ended up where.

La Costa is one of those hills you roll onto and take one look and ask, "How far up the hill are they going to start the GS?!?!!!" It's a sick challenge to think just how frikkin' rad it's going to be, because the hill has all the juice you need to go ballistic. Watching the course being set was exciting because it was a question of how direct they would let the line flow downhill. Arab began setting the course, followed by several modifications by Chicken, myself, and others, then finally Mollica started pushing offsets farther and farther out, causing many of us to panic, (and move a few back in), arriving at the course we all raced on which was very fast, but still fairly technical with several serious offsets at the top, into some left diagonals ending in hard right offsets, into zig-zags that were almost hybrid-like... medium pumpers at high speed. There were some fairly serious looking high-speed dumps on this course, Bruce Bjortvelt (sp?), David Carrasco, Michael Dong etc., some faring better than others. Heal quickly Bruce and David!

Near dark, Evans, with Chicken's help set a wicked tight course which I marked after watching Steve mach through it a couple times, then Chicken as well, both hitting maybe 4-8 cones in semi-darkness. Walking up the hill Steve was saying that most everyone would probably bitch about the course being too tight, and sure enough, the next morning the course was reset. I paced off everything on the TS for reference, and found the first 6-10 cones were 6ft, leading to several 6-7ft flowing curves and lane changes, which finally led to a couple more classic offsets, ending in 6.5-7.5 footers. In the end everyone advancing was pumping the sucker hard. You should have seen Ohm and Parsons in the B-pro. Great racing. The pros were really pushing the envelope and it's cool to see how varied the styles are, from Hackett's crazed loose charge, Evans sting-like-a-bee precision, and Chicken's solid pump. All the fastest big-course riders seem to have embraced (or never left) tight slalom, and it's awesome that we had a REAL ts on El Fuerte before losing it to development. There are probably a few, including Evans, who might contend that this still wasn't a 'real' tight, but nonetheless, it was a real wiggler.

As for the ramps, it was a very minor transition from the FCR mechanical gates, to the tape switch / false-start method. Once you adjusted you could play games with reaction time and 'slight' jumps resulting in a small penalty, although I had a huge false-start in my semi against Maysey which cost me big time. Just remember there's FIVE beeps, not four. 8-/

As for Mike's B class showing, I think he just hasn't been on the hill much this season, and got off to a slow start. There's some exciting new developments coming from Mike that I'll let him announce that should return him back to the VERY FRONT of the pack quite soon. I probably had the one-and-only-chance-in-hell to catch him in a lull, and blew it. I predict the next time we see Mike at a contest that he's back in the top 5.

I'm also completely fired up from this contest, feeling fast, and ready to train for Breck!!!!! I'm so stoked that I'm going this year and intend to make the most of the next month training. I was really personally pleased to have no gear gremlins at La Costa, and felt very relaxed and really enjoyed the hill. This year felt more like free riding and less like a contest. That may have been due to Sully's secret training methodology we shared throughout the weekend. It was great to share the ride down with Sully, who has been at most of the races I attended over the last three years.

So sheeyyeeeaaahhhhh!!!!!! Practice, wednesday night, 6pm, Bernal Rd. S.J. maybe a little dinner and downhilling afterwards?

Actually - I may have to be 50/50 on GGP tomorrow because the weather may suck, I will email in the AM for anyone interested...

and yes, Mike completely does rip like a mofo. Mike/Miko/Mark - some thoughts on the racing vibe at La Costa? What what was it like - new starting systems, equipment, etc.

Maria - can you email Tiger Bro David Carrasco's number/email - I wanted to see how he was doing.

Bruce from Santa Rosa - good effort at La Costa representing Nor-NorCal - hope you heal up fast, drop us a line on this forum as soon as you can type. You have put in a great effort showing up to more races than any of us in the NorCal scene. Heal up and let's get you back to practicing at GGP.

John Ravitch

L.C. Downhilling...
On 7/20/2004 Miko wrote in from (66.81.nnn.nnn)

David... I'm bringing my leathers and speedboard, but wonder when we'll get any time to ride. I could hit GMR on the way out monday am. We could get a really early start and be there by about 9am.

I'll try to talk with Sully tonight and give you a call as well. It sounds like a big crew is going to hit it sunday, but I'm sticking around for the tight slalom action. Gotta take it as far as I can! Talk tonight... (Is Mike bring any downhilling gear?) Mike?

I know this is Mikes column, but I see John Ravitch posting here from time to time. I was out at Jack's Canyon and ran into the Hopi's (Joanne) with their dogs. They said hi. I am thinking John changed his email.

La Costa is just a few days a way, I have no tight board as it is all dis- assembeled. I been doing a lot of biking so I will just have to see how it goes. See everyone in a couple of days.
