Michael,
A couple of suggestions about listing truck info--have the vendor include axle AND hanger width, as well as if the trucks are drilled newschool, oldschool, or both.

It occurred to me that many shops, customers and companies would benefit from a Concrete Wave Buyers Guide. So, I have come up with a set of very interesting ideas that I know will benefit all 3 groups.
Here are the main points to know:
1. The guide will come out in MARCH 2004 - I am starting to work on it NOW...
2. We will print 12,000 copies...they will be FREE and they will be a wide format look, just like the regular mag (but without perfect binding and glossy cover). They will be delivered by various skate distributors world wide. We will also include the Guide in subscribers copies.
3. Each company that advertises in Concrete Wave will be allowed to submit a maximum of 10 pictures in total...ie 5 wheels, 5 decks or 10 decks or 3 trucks and 7 decks. We want your latest product. The product shot should be 300 dpi resolution set against a white back ground. We can handle tiffs, jpegs but the must be 300 dpi. All product shots and info MUST be sent to concretewave@front.ru
4. We need the following specs: Wheels - size and durometer Decks - length and width, wheel base and composition Trucks - size and composition
5. Each advertiser in Concrete Wave mag or guide will also have their logo and 50 word write up in the Buyers Guide.
6. Those folks that don't yet advertise in Concrete Wave should contact me asap.
Thanks again for your support.

Hey, I knew it wasn't anything personal. It would be cool if you could add 'em to my next issue. Additional subscriptions is something I'm already working on by sharing my copy with my fellow skaters. I'll have to get my folks to send me over an extra copy or so so I can do more of that. There is literally a handful of guys in the over 30 crowd that I skate with regularly. So far, I'm the only one in the over 40 "crowd". Most everybody over here skates street and looks for photos of rails and stairs in the few copies of Transworld and Thrasher that people bring from the States in their suitcases. There are no bowls to speak of and the entire country probably has about as many backyard swimming pools as 5 residential blocks in Orange County. All of which are tiny, full and located in very exclusive neighborhoods. People are mostly into the type of skating they have access to. I, for one, get all stoked about skating all kinds of terrain after reading CW, drool over amazing skate spots and then head back to the same mini ramp I've skated for the last 2 years dreaming about a trip to almost anywhere else that has more varied skate terrain. It's definitely a frustrating experience sometimes. But we have an ancient saying that our rabbis taught us: "Who is the rich person? The one who is happy with what he has." So we make the best of what we have. In my own honest opinion, I think these guys never skated bowls and pools and then moved 1,000 miles away from the nearest radical cement skate spot.
I've only seen 2 longboards here in 4 years of keeping an eye out and the drivers are dangerous, so even if there is a great downhill run, there's a lot of risk involved. Bikers die here in road accidents at a scary rate. There are a variety of drainage ditches, but they are constructed mostly with plastic honey combs that are filled with cement and impossible to ride. I did find one rideable 7 ft. pipe in the desert once, but it was *real* tight. Couldn't do much in it but fakie. There are several cool privately owned plywood skate parks that include half pipes, mini ramps, banks, pyramids, ledges and rails. There are also several skateboard sponsors and a number of sponsored skaters, but I don't think you'd call them pros, except for one who competes internationally. These guys are pretty hot and a few of them can really rip the half pipe and mini ramps. You'll see coverage of some of the better skaters in the magazine Stubbs is sending for your wife to read in Hebrew. There are occassional small competitions around the country, mostly street, with an on/off skate park national championship. This year's was canceled because the primary sponsor backed out. Finances are tight here for almost everyone these days and even the skateboarders feel it sometimes. As far as a scene report, is this what you mean for the forum or something more formal for the mag? If you really want something for the mag, I could start trying to dig up some more interesting stuff and think about photos to go with it.

hmmm, I better speak with one of the shipping elves about this...
remember that song "Family Affair" by Sly and the Family Stone...well, that pretty well sums up our shipping dept.
I will have to dock my children's pay check for this infraction!
But seriously, if the stickers didn't arrive, it was an oversight...sorry...we will include extra in the next issue
Haim, can you get us a scene report from over there?? how about a few more subscribers?
Also, Barnes and Noble should have the new issue by Dec 5th or so...

What's all this about stickers?!? I didn't get any stickers with my subscription issue. At first, I thought Geezer-X got'em because he'd had such a hard time getting his subscription issues (and I know Michael, that you would give that kind of personal attention to a subscriber), but then I read that JC got'em too. Were these only included in domestic issues? Or was I just one envelope that slipped through the ballbearings?

Stubbs,
Just read your post today, too late on two counts:
1) It's sunday night, too late for EZ7 (cr*p) 2) My buddy is already on the plane... (cr*p times 2)
So I guess I can wait until the Barnes and Noble near my house has them (I havent checked in a while) to get the extra copies.
As most other college students know, finals are coming up, so I haven't had any free time at all... I spent saturday in school, and today writing essays... can't wait till the winter break to dust off my boards!
BTW, seeing those ABQ ditches in the mag brought good memories... Makes me want to hit some newly scoped ones around here!
BTW again, it amazes me how many ex-skaters I meet. One of my professors confessed to being a skater through college, and became nostalgic when I showed him the latest CW (page 49!) and my homemade 50 incher.
"Hehe, trackers!!!" he said

Thursday; received newest issue of CW, along with Roundwall calendar and two stickers, all in a nice vanilla envelope (manilla, vanilla, what's the diff?). Friday; abused GI Joe heavily for not having any action photos in the ABQ article (Casey got two :P). Was promptly treated to a "pool" session in the big bowl at Carlos Rey. Five bros, all in their late 30's - early 40's going off! Topped off the new ish nicely.

My last 72 hours went like this:
Thursday-Sick downhill runs with Doug Dupin complete with police permission / escort.
Friday-Concrete Wave arrived in the mail. The rest of day is written off.
Saturday-Had an absolute blast at the Van's banked slalom event with my son. Cabbage was the fastest and Curt Kimball was the coolest. Unreal event.
'78 was special indeed, but right now is unreal!!
Keep up the good work!

As some of you might know, I have developed a marketing strategy based on a number of books. These include: 1) The Tipping Point 2) Ideavirus 3) Permission Marketing 4) Purple Cow 5) The One to One Future
Why I am sharing this with you? Well, I'd like you understand what's happening out there as it relates to what I have tried/am trying to do.
The bottom line is I really want to infuse change within skateboarding. These books have provided me with incredible insights to affect change without a huge budget. As most of you know, I work very closely with small to medium size companies....most of the big guys don't really want change..they like the status quo...more about the skate cartel in another post!
There is reason why Concrete Wave looks the way it does....there is a reason why I respond to every subscriber and there is a reason why even though the majority of the skate industry seems to be in the doldrums, I am more excited than ever.
The fact is folks is that change is happening within skateboarding and my gut feeling tells me that the next 12 months are going to be an incredible turning point.
ARE YOU A PART OF THIS TURNING POINT??? Well there are a lot if's to consider... If you've logged onto this site, if you race slalom, ride pools, if you ride ditches, if you read concrete wave, juice or concussion...if you have watched Dogtown and Z boys, if you ride wheels that are softer than 99 durometer, if your board is wider than 9 inches (etc, etc) then I can tell you that you most likely are.
Adam has just informed me that this has become a very active forum...active is the word. It's all about actions, not words. So, thanks for being active. Thanks for helping to change the face of skateboarding.
Sorry this seems like a huge ramble...but know that things are rolling...I can feel it!

what's wrong this picture...???
but seriously. I am so relieved that
a) it arrived b)you're digging it
the vibe is SkateBoarder '78 + Surfer's Journal...that's my vision...I want to give people a nice overview of all types of skateboarding combined with the richness of SJ...but with a price equal to a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
I have 2 HUGE announcements to make...but I can't make them just yet...suffice to say, YOU WILL BE AMAZED who is now working on the mag...AMAZED...
spread the word on CW....we are on fire!

Michael,
We received our advertiser's copy today. I can't think of an appropriate superlative, but "wow." With each page, I wasn't sure whether to savor that page, or rush onto the next. I stood there, transfixed, just like I did 28+ years ago when I'd receive my copy of SkateBoarder Magazine.
We're really pleased to be supporting such a quality publication, and can only imagine what you've got in store for us in the future.

Hey Mike, I got it yesterday, NICE!, really nice. The new and old mix is great. I would dig seeing old photos of lesser known types a little more (as well as still seeing old photos of the more well known pros).Speaking of "old"- did I mention Russ Howell, Russ Gosnel, Gunnar Huago,or Mike Williams? Dan Hughes brought up a good point about resubscription notices. Later- Paul Howard

Still waiting for the latest issue but the old one is at many locations in Vancouver (watch out for slow sales in Vancouver seems I'm always facing the same issues (in front of TWS) on the rack for you).
But I don't think I've seen the show in a long time. If the show is still on then check it out: Kevin Harris has a new "Skate Ranch" in Richmond.

HAIM - Thanks for the Hebrew skate mag and Skatepark of Isreal sticker! You rock! I am going to forward the mag onto to Mr. Brooke as his wife can read Hebrew. It was very cool of you to send that. Let me know if you need any more back issues.

This Mag Rocks!!! Not only because I am in it, but because it brings back the true heart of skateboarding. Check out www.floridaskater.com to see the East Coast in action. That picture of Alan Gelfand in the calendar brings back great memories of the Abrasion Basin, Chris Baucom, Rodney Mullen, and the rest of those Florida skaters. Just got the new issue. This is the best skate mag that I have every had (and I have most of the old Skateboarder issues). The Cherry Hill article brought back memories of skating/working at Apple in Columbus, Ohio. Also, it is great to see T-Bone publishing pics again. He published a pic of me at Apple in Skateboarder in '80, and he was a blast to hang around with. What a talent he has. I just had ACL reconstruction surgery last week, and I'm trying to not be depressed about not skating at our new local park. Thanks for keeping the spirit alive! Let's show these kick-flippers what real skating is all about!
