answer to Sasha's question on Women- snowboarding/skateboarding\

Sasha, I think the reason you see so many women snowboarding si that the sport is more cross catered to women. There are of course women specific decks, boots, bindings as well as many nice looking lines of women specific outerwear. Plus there are women teachers in the sport- clinics for women several times per year at most bigger resorts.
Plus there is also the preception that snowboarding is safer (untrue) and the perception that you won't get cut snowboarding (untrue) and the idea that you might meet one of the cute snowboarders guys (true) as well as be heavily outnumbered guys to girls (true). All of which make the snowboarding to women seem pretty inviting. Plus its a road trip-.
Now if there was women's specific gear we might see some headway and if there was a way to make women feel less "huge" in all the apdding and so forth ie. make the sport look more appealing- then we might have a little more momentum. Unfortunately there aren't as many females that ride for the sheer stole of it- like yourself. But I will say that some of the females-(our East coast example is ILVA)get the sheer stoke more than ANY of the guys.

I’m so looking forward to sampling the handiwork of our esteemed colleague Mr. X. Also got myself a can of Cytomax as he recommended because it sounds perfect for people who need to be at peek performance but don’t have the time to work out (heheheh). Have this strange feeling that as with most of our outings we will still be assembling components upon arriving at our destination.
Q&A
Most people’s comments are usually lost on me as I whisk by but if someone gets a good look at my ride, their usual question is: Hey, did you make that?
…and my answer usually is: “Everything but the wheels!” Because, you see, sometimes I also get to ride wheels that I had some part in making.

"Can you do tricks on that?" is usually the first question I get asked. "no" I reply "why do you do it then?" they come back with "because it's fun" I try to explain "but you can't do tricks on it" they repeat "I've been watching you try to land a kickflip for the last hour with no sucess, so you can't do tricks either on your board. Are you having fun yet?" Touche....hee hee Seriously though I do admire the patience of modern skate youth, if my skateboarding career was built around being able to land a kickflip I would have given up years ago. What I am seeing in our local park (Stockwell London England) is more younger skaters getting into old skool/surf skating (not sure what to call it we always called it skateboarding).Old boards and wheels are being brought out of retirement home made long boards are starting to appear and the sound of sliding wheels fills the air and few things are better than a carving chain gang raging around the park. "That was the most fun I've ever had skating" some young dude said to me the other day after an intense stockwell carve session involving skaters of many generations. I think it depends on what kids are exposed to, if your introduction to skating is through a certain video game then skating is all about landing tricks not about flow or style.(I'm not knocking THPS I love that game!)The more people see and ride longboards, slalom boards, old boards etc. then hopefully their minds will be open to more than landing the holy kickflip. Anyone out there in the computer game buisness want to make Pro Slalomer for the PS2? Enough of this I'm off for nollie heelflip practice. Peace Mog

Glen,
Looks like I maybe doing some reasearch and a story. I don't know what happened to the ramps but when I've run into some of the aliens and earthlings we have fond memories. Ray Flores and I spoke a month ago, I ran into the Buck brothers at the Sea Otter bike race on my way down to the Bahne SlalomCross race. I think there going to show up at the SF race on Sunday. I've been trying to get Roskopp back into it as well. I'll keep you posted.

First thing people ask me when I'm riding a long board.
|

John Gilmour

I've been riding longboards since I was 11. Nelson Vales and I had the longest decks in NYC for a long time. I've traditionally used my longboard speedboards as a place to put tons of stickers- a giant rolling sticker collage. I rode a 48 inch deck until 1976 and I still have and ride my 52 inch longboard, and of course my 36 inch Turner Downhill deck, but my favorite cruiser is the Ed Economy Streetrider.
Funniest comments I've gotten. As I skate by... "Mine's Longer (smirk)" "Is that a skatebus/ skate limo?" "Can I get on?" "Is that a skateboard built for two" "Why is it so long?" answer ……some women prefer it that way. "Is it harder to ride one of those?" "Is that a speedboard?" "Can you do tricks on that?- Do a trick!" "Can you turn?"
One of the funnier things happened last June. I just moved into Southampton, N.Y. for the summer. So I decided to ride my Ed Economy Streetrider to the beach. I brought along some paper thinking I would do some work at the beach (that in itself is funny).
So I get there and start walking along the beach with my board. An 11 year old kid comes up to me. It went like this. Kid #1 "Wow! That's a cool board!" Me "Thanks." Kid #1 "Is it yours?" Me (puzzled) "Yeah, it's mine." Kid #1 "Do you ride it?" Me (a little miffed) "Sure I ride it." Kid #1 "Aren't you a little old to ride it?" Me "Well, I don't think so. Besides it's fun even if you are old like me." Kid #1 "Are you any good?" Me "I just got back from the Longboard World Championships two days ago and I won a bunch of events." Kid #1 "really, for real?"
Big mistake.... I could see my peaceful day at the beach starting to vanish as crazy glue kid #1 already changed his direction and started walking in the same direction.
So I figure...I know... "Here go try my board."
The kid takes off for the parking lot. I wonder if I'll ever see that board again.
I drop my towel and lay back to soak up some rays and decide to catch a few z's. Then a dark cloud covers me. I open my eyes. It's no cloud, ….. its Kid #1 with Kid #2, Kid #3, Kid #4, Kid #5, and Kid Sister #6- all blocking my sun.
More questions...Kid #4 "Are you sponsored?" Me "Not anymore." Kid #3 "Why not?" Me "I don't know, I was riding for this company- pointing to Turner Downhill sticker, now I'm not riding for anyone right now." Kid #2 "What did you ride in the contest?" Me "I borrowed a friend's Quicksilver deck and won on that"
(wanting some peace---) Me "Have all of you tried this deck?" Lots of nods saying no. Me. "Well go try it".
So I figure that will keep them busy. And Kid #1 will bring the deck back after they are done. The whole troops stomps off to the parking lot in the distance.
Eyes shut- a few minutes pass. Then a bigger cloud and sand swishing. They brought the whole gang. I'm surrounded by about 20-25 kids all with a million questions. So much for sleeping.
So I took them all over to the parking lot and showed them how well the board turns- how to walk on the deck, and how the deck could be pumped. I even rode someone's sister tandem. The kids talked about the different shops in the area. Maybe some of them will come to Troy's slalom spot this year.
If I had brought a short deck to the beach I wouldn't have met anyone. Later that summer one of the kid's sister's taught me how to surf. That was fun. Now I understood the connection between longboards and surfing. But I plan to stay a beginner forever- that way the surf is good everyday.

I ran cones for 2 hours after work. I made truck parts and layed up a deck after my wife went to bed. I was peeling that deck out of the vacuum bag before I'd even brushed my teeth this morning. I'm gonna lsalom, longboard, and session at a park for 3 days this weekend. And the coolest part is that all over the US, Canada, and especially in Venezuela, there are a bunch of people who are feeling just like me. This is even more fun than it was in high school. And it's about the only thing from then thats better now than it was. This is so cool.

Mike, i think its more what people do when they see me. i skate at vans a good bit and the people just stare( at me & my board..(GRAVITY TEAM)).here's a 38 year old man bustin' all the ramps and a few ramp transfer's.my style is very surf, so my hands and arms are up & out in a flow kind of thing... i've seen the young ones talkin' and kind of imitating me to each other( that's cool skate punks should dis' the old guy) AS FOR WHEN WE SLALOM... i slalom with a group called RED CLAY RACING,here in GA. its(SLALOM) somewhat rare...the kids/people like to watch but when they try..its like they never skated before.Rick & Tom are more than happy to lend/demo the boards in hope of promotion..but they want to try with little flippy kicks. anyway(i digress..) when they see my turner they think it looks racey and "neat".

no one consulted me on the change.... it just happened ....
I still kept skating....I have always skated....but somewhere along the way, the folks who ran the skate mags and make skate products lost me....
until I found out there were a ton of other skategeezers like me...
it's been a long, strange trip....but after years of trying to bring all types of skateboarding to skaters (and the general public/media) ...things are really changing
I love skateboarding...I don't care what type of board you ride, as long as you ride (that's taken from the great Bill Danforth)
50% of skaters are UNDER 11...their minds are still open to new things....most of the time...that is why they rush to try the longboards and slalom boards I bring to the park...
the 14 to 18 set tend to be a little more reserved... "will my friends think I am cool riding one of these things..."
Still, over time, attitudes change

My favorite question ever was the hardest to answer;
Hey Mr., when did you become Old School?
How to answer?
Was it when all boards became the uniform size of 8x29 and I didn't follow suit?
Was it when I refused to wear pink and lime green knee gaskets.
Was it when everything went concave and I had to search for flat boards?
Was it 1975 when I nailed the roller skate to the board (I know, just like everyone else).
So I answered with someting I lifted from someone on the NCDSA.
"Old School? Dude, I drive the bus!" And as usual I was the only one laughing.

After seeing a certain brand of Green wheels kids have asked me, "ABEC11? Where did you get them ABEC11 bearings?"
Little kids at skateparks are great. They are SO into everything. I seem to spend more time lending my 36" pool board to kids that riding it myself.

So close...
the answers to the question are getting so close... so, I'll give you a hint...actually a very big hint. Sector moved a while back...find the name of their old address and you will find out that this was the exact street that Turner was on...
first person to post the street address wins the sub.
As for skateboard mania reunion special, sure, I am into that!
