when did slalom it start?
well, it probably was being done in the 50's, but the formal start would be 1963 or so...
anyone else want to add their comments?
I think the more important questions are WHY did it end and what brought it back?
I think the NCDSA has played a HUGE role in the slalom renaissance, plus the fact that the Europeans and a select number of Americans kept the torch burning through the dry decades....

I was at Vans one night, and having fun carving in the wooden box bowl area, and they put on "Can I Say" by the DC early mid 80s punk band Dag Nasty. I went apes#@!. For slalom, I like to listen to the rhythmic whoosh of urethane on pavement.

For music, it depends on what type of skating I'm doing. Longboarding its either Reggae,Ska, Soul, Motown, or Jazz, especially groovy stuff, it helps me get a smooth line. For freestyle, I like punk rock usually Oi! Hardcore, and Street Punk for skating. Sometimes I'll throw on some thrash, or some metal. For slalom, I like to listen to either Europian power metal, cause its got a pretty straight driving beat, or I listen to Drumcorp especially The Cadets and the Crossmen streetbeats.

Now, a new question....
What song, when played at a skate session would get you pumped up?
Something by the Clash? Pistols? 2Pac?

Santa Monica 1975. Actually, I would have been more about LaCosta or Signal Hill, but I'm not picky. I'll settle for Gaithersburg MD, May 1-3. 2003. Where do I pick up the money?

I would bring a present day board out to to Huntington in 1965, along with a halfpipe. Just ride the thing and watch the crowd go "What IS that thing"??? cool!!!! how does he do that and not fall? where'dja get that board? can I try it? wow! look at those wheels!!!what's that stuff they are made of? what's that ABEC11 mean? it would rock.....

Growing up (still in progress) in England we used to have to wait months to get copies of Skateboarder magazine, where the blue skies ruled. With the internet we get to see video/pics of an event the same day...amazing.
Where would I have liked to have been? I think I'd like to go back to Del Mar 83 and 84. I would use the $10,000 to bring my friends that wernt lucky enough to see Mullen rule the freestyle and see Mike McGill do pretty much the first Mc Twist on concrete in the Pool, Cabellerro board slide 1/2 way around the pool, Hosoi, Magnussen, and Kasai pulling airs so high you'd swear that air trafiic control would pick 'em up. Utterly fantastic.
Best day on a board: The day White Yo Yo's came out. For one weekend I WAS in California...albiet only in my mind. Those wheels were so good.
Place I'd like to go where I didnt make the trip, simple, Paris, the Trocadero. never went, cant remeber why. But this year I'll be going. I have an order for 500 cones...so those French seem to be enjoying their slalom.

If I could go back....... it would not nessasarily be about the spots in as much as it was about the people I used to skate with.
1. the day I saw my first urethane wheels and a board not made out of a plank. My neighbor across the street bought a blue Bahne (a blue first gen with the square tail and the softer flex) with Chicago trucks, and Cadillac wheels. I was riding a Roller Derby Mustange 15 at the time and riding his deck was like floating. It was the Cadillac El Dorado of the time.
2. Skyline Pit (aka the Toilet Bowl) - a big bad bowl in the hollywood hills. It got shut down after too many after hours sessions and people not respecting the spot. It is what I attribute my "leave it cleaner than when you got there" attitude.
3. The red curb - a driveway that had a perfect tranisition on it. You could grind it, lip slide it, tail tap it and jump a schwinn stingray off it. It was all of 9" high, but me and friends had more fun on that driveway from '74-'76
4. Pipeline skatepark - my favorite park of all time. I had some of the most fun skate sessions in my life there.
5. Marina Skatepark - my new favorite after Pipeline. The Dogbowl pool was great and the clay bowls were a ton of fun.
BTW - The Devo video shoot was at Marina Skatepark. Dave Andrecht FS channels in the keyhole pool.

I'll have to 'cheat' on this one.
I'd go back to the late '40s / early '50s & buy some land in southern California, attempt to initiate a skate BOOM, and return to the present (hey, it's only a time machine -- some nuts, some bolts, whatever) and -- if my BOOM turned into a bust -- I'd sell some land at a premium & try again.
Oh, and JG: Great story on the beach. And another great post a ways back (minds getting foggy -- time for sleZZzzz).

In my neighborhood the first question the kids ask when they see me skating is "Got any longboards you wanna sell?". I tell 'em no, but I can tell you where to get one. They stop listening long before I get to the dot-com part. D@#* kids, want everything handed to them these days LOL. At least they're interested.
Hey look, there's Steve Marinak down there! Everyone check out his really cool site floridaskater.com for the true old school stoke!

John Gilmour that's a great story! Now if any of those kids had a much older sister, or single mom, it's better than bringing a puppy to for a walk in the park! Are you going to be at Kona this summer? You were real fast when I saw you here in West Palm Beach. So what happened with the Turner endorsement..someone pick up this guy (besides an older sister or mom that is)..sponsor him.

If I could find a time machine and transport you back in time with your current quiver of boards and $10,000 in cash, where would you go and what would you do with the money?
Del Mar circa 1985? Santa Monica 1975? Huntington Beach 1965 The Devo video shoot for "Freedom of Choice" at Apple?
the choice is yours...now get busy

On a side note,
Patti Monihan, Older sister of little Stevie Monahan former SIMS team rider, was at Paso Robles doing an article for the local paper. She was a rad skater back in the 70's, She was so stoked and couldnt believe that people like Hutson,Hester,Skoldberg,Evans,Ransom,Hackett,Olso n,Peters,Smith,Krisik,Schufeldt are still involved in raceing skateboards.
