i don't know if resentment is the right word i'm thinking envy. there would be none of it if it wasn't for the "old guys" i grew up skating with and others influence. i resent the fact that most kids in the parks just don't pay attention. it's kinda like crossing the street. i don't feel sorry for the guy that gets creamed by a truck because he wasn't looking. hope this doesn't open a big can of worms. but some learn the hard way. but if your going to skate parks that's what we have to deal with. either that or move to so cal and find empty pools of our own to skate.

one of the main differences between c.w. and thrasher et al. is that c.w. concrete wave goes about life without resorting to the mean-spiritedness that the others(not so much trans world as thrasher/big brother) rely upon in their writing. as well, thrasher etc. are interested in selling a version of eternal youth, and the last thing they want is to remind the readers that well, YES, you ARE going to get older. and if you got the kids who read those rags to really tell you the truth, i believe that you would find a bit of resentment towards us older skaters for interloping on their thing.

michael,
maybe your on to something ie: "skaterider foundation"? when i think "geezer" i'm picturing the guy outside the e.r. smokin' with his oxygen unhooked and a walker in front of him. not the forty year old who sprained his ankle coming off a heavy frontside grind. i don't think anybody over thirty needs any bones thrown. cw is doing a fine job throwin" bones. even without it we would still skate.

Well a good sign was seen during Old School Sunday at PBG Skatepark this morning. The 20 person carve train had skaters from 12 to 44 years old in it... and it was the teenies who were calling for "CARVE TRAIN!, CARVE TRAIN!" Some of us old boys snuck away to bomb the hills at the land fill and when we got back we find the 12 to 20 year olds forming their own trains! The future's so bright... I gotta wear shades.

It's a beautiful day when you see an 11 year-old kickflipper save his own coins up for a 56" supertanker because he thinks "that carving stuff is fun".

I guess it really is a question of what do you consider the roll of a niche publication.
I believe strongly that you have to make readers happy and get them involved with what you are doing...it is a community. Coupled with this is the fact that your advertisers have to feel they are getting good value from the publication. You can't be all things to all people. But if magazines are a community, back in the late 80's our community was NOT 99% street skating!
CW has taken a very narrow niche but we showcase a variety of skateboarding. I would like to think that over the past 13 years (which is basically how long they have be showing just street) the other mags could have thrown a few bones out to us skategeezers, longboarders, etc etc.
But they didn't really throw anything out there. They opted for big $$$$$ and shunted aside anything that wasnt' street. Sure, some vert stuff was thrown in there, but by and large it's as if there are two skate universes out there. What you see in the regular mags and the passion you read about here on NCDSA and other websites. Let's face it, if it wasn't for Juice, Concussion and CW, our universe would be completely ignored. My disatisfaction with what I saw in the traditional skate media was to create International Longboarder. That led to Concrete Wave...which I believe is a more well rounded publication.
I am not complaining about this...it's just what is. But imagine how much stronger skateboarding would be right now if it's foundation was made up of the soul you see on this website not the huge amounts of "sole" from the shoe ads.
There is movement afoot! This is welcomed

Hey! If my soapbox rant did'nt make sense from 1-9-04 it was due to too much black tea and being in a hurry at work. Are the other "skate" mags now actually showing current present day Flatland, Downhill, Slalom, Palmer, Olsen, etc? I really don't look in them much at all due to a busy schedule and trying to skate when the weather permits. I was happy to see Neil Blender on a cover of some mag a while ago. CW's still in the lead as far as skateboarding for the sake of skateboarding though in my opinion. I agree with the other writers about the other mags showing what form of skating makes money (thin boards used for tricks that break boards so new boards will be purchaced frequently) and showing old photos since the "new school" has become just as old and boring as huge airs on vert were getting in the 1980's (the saturation commentaries). I am just SOOOO glad to have a skateboard only magazine without stupid clothes/image/music crap for people who need an identity. Gosh I wish the weather in Oregon would clear so I could go skate! i think the mags are starting to cover old school skating more now because the market has become staurated with new school and all the riders and products are the same, the kids that buy thrasher, transworld etc are now starting to realize that there is more out there than street skating and they are starting to notice skaters like dave hackett and duane peters

michael, you asked for opinions well here's my humble one. thrasher, transworld etc. they don't cover the other sides of skating because it simply is not what sells to kids. it is unfortunate but it's my opinion. i believe it's up to our generation to spread the word and show the different aspects of skating to the next generation. i do it by skating and letting kids in my neighborhood that it is just as cool to carve a hill as it is to ride your favorite curb or ledge.the industry sells tony hawk not the 30 plus year old guy carving hills or doing slalom with his buddys. skateboarding is what it's all about. and having style while you do it. i don't always agree with what goes on in the industry or the image they push on kids but that's not why i continue to skate at almost forty. cw is a great mag and you cover it all with style. you just set the example and hope the others can catch up. those who skate will always skate. with or without thrasher or transworld

why do you think the mags stopped covering slalom, downhill, pools, freestyle etc? and why do you think they are starting to cover it now...?

Hey! If I owned/operated one of the shoe display/image magazines, I'd want to change them to show ALL kinds of skating. If I were a mole from CW I might want to keep everything the same so that the opiate of idiosy is there to distract those who like such skateboard monoculture nonsense to stay at bay to keep CW pure for those who like All kind of skating and appreciate skating for skating. However I'd soon find myself in a state of cognitive dissonance over wanting to awaken the masses to what a BIG PICTURE skating really is and want to change the course of the mags anyway. I say if those other mags like the rancid boring sauce they serve so much, let them marinate in it until they drown! Adios Amigos - Paul H.

Gang,
there is a ton of stuff coming down...and it's heavy, heavy stuff the next 12 months are going to be INSANE
a lot of folks are starting to "borrow" some of the images you see in CW...this just validates what we've been doing all these years.
it's been a long time coming...
so, here's a question...if you ran SkateBoarder or Transworld or Big Brother or Thrasher, what would you do right now?
1) keep things the same 2) show more types of skateboarding 3) something else
I'd love to hear from you...obviously, things are afoot...

Getting more and more reports about CW popping up in Newsagents around the country...This is fantastic news as although Octane have been importing CW for specialist stores the best thing is to see it in many many places. A lot of the companies we deal with advertise in CW, so it all works well together...more and more UK skaters will see the gear we know and love, so this is fantastic news!!! Spreading the word about skating seems to be a circular process, we need great boards, we need to know about them, and we need to read about it. CW fills the circle really well. (and I'm in the latest issue too, so you can't have everything!!!)

Ric, I think those episodes were done quite awhile ago, before slalom was going full-bore again. I don't think MB can go back and insert content into episodes that are already in the can.
Do yourself a favor and get some of Kenny Mollica's DVD's.

Michael, Ive had fuel for about 2 wks now and have seen CW tv about a half dozen times. I havent seen any "SLALOM" or really any legends or much old school to speak of. Am I missing the those episodes? Or is the format not including such things. I do like it very much. I was expecting it to be more on the topics in the mags. Thanks, keep it rollin and I'll keep watchin. More slalom please.
