Stubbs is working hard to get 7/11 to carry the mag
the only problem with this is that slurpee consumption might decline.... folks will be blowing their hard earned money on CW
glad you found it at B&N

FYI: I found Concrete Wave at Barnes & Noble in Ellicott City, Maryland after missing it for awhile(or perhaps others had beaten me to it. There's still 4 copies remaining. Nice article on Danforth! Keep up the great work!

Michael - I wanted to share this post from a thread from the Texas Poolsharks site from our bro Mr. Danniel Hernandez who is in the military:
Texas Poolsharks Recommend Message 34 of 34 in Discussion From: SouthernDannyBoy Sent: 2/8/2004 8:42 PM I know its late but just want to say that I'm way stoked this morning. I walk into the exchange and look down at the magazine rack and wouldn't you know it, right next to the Thrasher and Transworld...a big stack of Concrete Wave with Danforth's way tweaked frontside rock! Made my day and probably my tour since being here. The bad part is it makes me ache for some concrete tranny...only four weeks though and I'll be home on leave in San Antonio...take care bros! Wow, Concrete Wave stocked in Korea...

Thanks for your service, Danny Boy, to your country and your magazine!

Hi, my name's Niall, I'm 12 years old and i've been skateboarding since I was about 8. I'm doing a research project on why skateboard tricks are called what they're called. I've been doing this project for three weeks. I've done a million searches on google, i've searched databases, i've sent an e-mail to transworld skateboarding and i'm still waiting for an answer from them, but I still haven't really come up with anything. Since you've written a whole book about skating history I thought you might know a thing or two about it. Also do you know anyone or anywhere else that I could find out more about this? Thanks for your time, Niall

Arrived in the mail yesterday in FL. (if it weren't for websites and email no one would know it was even lagging, I suppose is builds the anticipation).
Good job, have not made it through in detail but it all looks very nice. I like the size of the mag too...very "Airport Professional" feeling...very Surfers Journal type of thing.
Pictures look great. I would imagine the leading and kerning is probably better too, if I really knew what the hell that meant.
How do all those other websites get ads? Do they buy them? Or is there a reciprocal ad program. If so I'll slap an ad up on FloridaSkater.com if you give me an ad in return. Thanks....and great work (I know it's a lot of work).
Same with you Adam...can I trade an ad on our page for contest calendar listings for the 2004 Florida OSSS?

getting more mags into local shops

Gang,
it's very easy for skate shops to get copies of the mag...all they need to do is visit tailtap.com or concretewavemagazine.com and sign up for the $75 per year shop program.
They get 5 copies, five times per year and a complete listing in the mag (5 times.
Many shops will be listed FOR FREE in our upcoming buyer's guide. I would love for you to walk into your local shop that's listed and point this out to them...perhaps then they will get on the shop program...
slowly, it's building....and as for Barnes and Noble, well, I gotta keep pushing them as well....

If you mean in the stores, No. I asked at Borders Books, nothing. Barnes and Nobles, nothing. Vans Skate Park, nothing. They actually stopped carrying any mags at Vans because the kids were either ripping them up or ripping them off. I'll call again tomorrow mid morning and will leave my numbe if I don't get you.

For the record, with regard to the Nomad cover photo shoot at 9bowl, at one point Davo (the phototgrapher) heard a loud "smack" while he was adjusting his camera. Bill didn't say anything, but Davo was convinced it was the back of Bill's head on the cement. Don't get me wrong, bill skated perfectly and was right on cue, enabeling Davo to adjust the light placement and camera placement to get the best shots. Should he have had his helmet on? Would the cover shot be different if Bill was wearing pads and a helmet? Yes and yes. Its a double-edged sword. On one hand, we want to promote safety and the wearing of protective equipment. On the other, for the sake of the "soul" of the sport, we want to see pictures that display the core aggression and go-for-it attitude that we all strive for. I agree with Hackett on most points. Personally, I have always worn equipment, I knee slide regularly (it's less tiring than running), and I've had fewer injuries. I even wear Burton snowboard butt pads to prevent hippers. I actually feel naked without pads on when I'm in a pool or at a park.

Dave, that is incredible about SkateBoarder imposing that regulation. That is something that smacks of "social engineering" and there is NO WAY I am going down that road.
I have begun to speak with other photographers about this "Little Rippers" section. I can tell you that there is a lot of interest in it. It is certainly a nice way to bookend the mag...we have older and YOUNGER folks ripping.
Lotta (our head photographer) just sent me a photo of a women ripping it up on vert. Big Brother (in their last issue) had a killer opener of a women riding vert. I'd like to make a request for any females out there who are ripping, get photos to us.
Dave, hope you got everything in for buyer's guide!
cheers michael

Hackett-Nathan is still trying to teach me to knee slide, and I know what you mean, you have to think about it, its just not a natural thing, " step one , two , go to knees" thats alot to think about when your bailing from a fall in a pool, especially since for 30 yrs we been doing the Boston 2 step tuck and roll.
Helmets, I remember charging La Costa with no Helmet, not once but twice in 2001 before the first race there, WHAT WERE WE THINKING! the course we had set was way more difficult and longer then what we raced on. When we showed up for the 2001 race, Hester, Cross and I had set the course, Gary and I were the first to run it, I had 92 Stradas on and about the 5th cone I went down with no helmet on, I smacked my mellon pretty good and got my cage rattled, when it came time to race, I was so gun shy from the fall earlier.
Anyways, theres a time and place for it, I always where pads at skateparks because you have to, Slalom, I generally always were the pads and helmet, Backyard pools rarely, Its just a natural enviroment that I'm comfortable not wearing them, Its a bad example for my kid I know, but I dont skate like I use to, I stay within my comfort zone.

Back in the day Skateboarder magazine became so corporate, that they did start imposing the "NO PADS" "NO PHOTO" rule. LAME. Thank God the NOMAD cover is so core! There is NO question that wearing the proper equipment and gear is a good idea and should be done. But then again, so is wearing a seat belt and a condom. But who does this all the time? No one. Especially if a magazine is telling you to do it.
I think it's by attraction - NOT promotion.
Many times, riding a backyard pool is very tight and wearing pads makes it hard to be flexible and loose. Most of the time the tranny is so harsh and quick; that there is no time or way to knee slide out of anything! this is why so many hardcore pool riders don't wear pads. Why do it? They almost make you fall. Then there are those (including myself) that believed for many years that if you wear pads- You PLAN on falling. There are some riders like Mark Partain, who does every move in the book, and just rips everything loud and hard- NEVER wearing pads or a helmet! He rarely falls or bails; when he does; he just runs it out- OG style. Let's face it; there are many ways to ride and to bail. I am almost 44 and I just learned to knee slide 3 years ago. I STILL, have to THINK about going to my knees on a bailed move. After running out of everything for over 30 years, knee sliding does not come natural. I actually tore my ACL doing a knee slide in the big capsule bowl at the Vans triple crown in 2001. I firmly believe that had I run it out - that would not have happened.
If your a young rider, I think it's a great idea to always wear pads and a helmet and get used to them - to the point that they feel totally comfortable and natural. They will enable you to take your riding to another level. If your 35 or older; just be grateful you can bend over and tie your shoes! (If you can see them!)
I, myself prefer to ride, race AND ride pools ALWAYS with at least a helmet on.

whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyy yyy, CW is here in qunatity. Had a great quote from a customer today, he said he loves CW especially for "all the litle ads from companies with great gear for sale". I understand what he means, we used to POUR over Skatboarder mag, filling in fantasy Val Surf orders looking at every product, wishing we could buy it in the UK. Great thing is we have the stuff at the same time as the mag. Loved the Swiss downhilling pics. The Hackett slalom pic, and the Blender hand plant. Marvellous.

the good folks in swiss piece certainly have their heads screwed on right...9 miles..i'd get dizzy...
anyway, do what you can to convince the powers that be...lord knows it wouldn't kill them to throw a 1/2 page ad in CW... : )

Michael, I did not mean to bust you balls or sound that way in regards to sales. It's just I do this all day long (selling) and I got on the "soap box". The mag is great.
You know there are so many readers out there that are connected with industry folks maybe you could have an incentive package...like bring in an advertiser, get a years subscription, or a board, or something. Just a thought.
Keep up the great work.
