There's a picture in the latest CW of skaters ripping up a new park, with about a kazillion spectators- the caption indicates that gear is mandatory in the park- see if you can spot a single person in that photo wearing gear! It's funny how we get used to wearing/seeing helmets and stuff- I always get freaked out when I visit states that have no helemet laws for motorcyclists- I'm just not used to seeing bareheaded people on bikes. I learned to skate in the 70's when no-one wore helmets (maybe a hockey helmet, if they had a mean mom) and it feels weird to wear a helmet, but I do, if i'm going fast, or trying anything other than just cruising. My girlfriend teased me about the helmet, till I showed her the Dr Dave article in ILB, that convinced her. (I'd show her the latest Schnitzel vid, but she's starting to want to skate, and that would probably freak her out too much!) I don't think we'll ever reach a point where all skaters wear a lid all the time, but who knows? Remember when only a few NHL players wore helmets?

safety gear??

Growing up, my first skayeboards were purchased at a surfshop. No protective gear was even available then. As things progressed, we started wearing those tennis elbow pads. One good fall and you had road rash but not swellbow.
We wore safety gear as soon as it bacame available. Not because it was cool. Not because we saw someone in the mags wearing it. Because it became a necessity.
But things are differant now. Back then we were skating small kinked pools with vert. These kids now prefer rails, ledges, and stairs.
While the first peice of gear I put on these days is a helmet, I would recommend wrist guards to nu-skoolers. How many times have I seen a bone poking out of some kids wrist on those new vids?
Maybe we ought to start a masas mail campaign from the insivisuals to like CW and suggest that we prefer to see the gear we wear in the mags. Maybe then those protective gear companies will get the idea?
What`s the email for...
Protec Scba Crashpads
etc...
Maybe an online form we can copy and paste and email to these guys?
WE SUPORT THOSE THAT SUPPORT US...heh heh!!!

pads and helmets were not invented until 1976. think of all the hardcore skaters that had to go without before they came out.skateboarder mag etc had pictures of jay adams and others with skate helmets on.if it sold then,it can work now.a skate shot is still the same.

First; the "American Nomad" issue has arrived safely in New Mexico. Second; "The Quiver" philosophy... Joe Lehm said it years ago; "Quiver Counts". Now there is an article on floridaskater.com with that quote, Deathbox is using that theory in an ad, and y'all are going to start pimping it. It's a fact, folks. One board won't do it all (sorry, Brad; love your deck, but...). Third; at our new Sk8 Skool, helmets and knee-pads are required. We understand the need, and Joe and I are both "pad-nannies". But to throw out all "Young Gun" photos that don't have gear? That would cut the input by 90%. I don't want kids thinking they are bulletproof, but I also don't want great photo spreads to suffer. The answer is not to print only helmeted pics, the answer is to get your kids in a lid. If the kids wear helmets more often, the photos will show kids in helmets. Censoring photos isn't the answer; teaching safety is.

Adam, I agree it is very important, I have 3 small kids. At some point all of us were influenced to wear safety gear probably by the example of someone we skated with, respected, or admired, etc. I think those examples come in real life more so than out of a magazine. Personally, I can't stand how the kids wear helmets without strapping them for fashion purposes, and I tell them when I skate at the park...usually before they slam...and then remind them after they slam and the helmet flies off. CW's readers are 99% past the age level we are talking about. Launching into the Little Rippers column could be a waste of space...then again...it may be a good risk of a few pages. If it gets the kids to pick up the mag and bring it to school, then CW has succeeded in a huge way and the message will spread like wildfire. CW's job is to stay in business, grow, improve, and I think they have a message they want to spread. If they can fit safety in there as well, then god bless em, I'm all for it. But honestly as a kid I did not read the Curtis Hesselgrave Safety Tips, or the Dennis Shufeldt Yoga thing....I'm into it now out of necessity. But making it mandatory to have safety gear on to get your pic in the mag is about as lame as only putting pics in the mag if the rider is using products from an advertiser. I think the message should possibly be "preferred" in reference to pics and safety gear.
And Michael, as far as any company "inquiring about advertising"...hey, I'm in sales...if you've got anyone coming to you, its almost a miracle. In most cases you will have to solicit the advertiser. Pick up the phone call Protec, TSG, whoever and sell, sell, sell. The old saying is, "nothing happens without the sale".
Now who is coming to FL in April?

Helmets in CW?

"it's amazing...not ONE skate safety gear company has ever inquired about advertising in the mag...or submitted anything for noteworthy. amazing."
I find it anything but amazing. CW -- like its predecessor ILB -- publishes mostly pics of unhelmeted riders. CW routinely runs full-page ads showing unhelmeted riders doing high-risk tricks like drop-offs from roofs, high ledges, etc. Does CW do anything to raise awareness of riding safety on a recurring basis, like a dedicated section as it does with other topics? Not that I've seen.
So why is it amazing that helmet companies aren't beating a path to CW's door to advertise?
Here at Ncdsa.com we have, for over seven years, raised awareness of riding safety with three forums: Riding Safety, Safety Equipment, and Crashing. We give free banner ads to companies selling safety gear. We have our resident DrD raising awareness of head injuries. And on and on. It's a proactive effort, not one that occurs naturally, not one that pays anything. It's even decidedly uncool in many peoples' books.
I do it because I think it needs doing; because the very toe-flipping groms we're both hoping to 'convert' have little appreciation for the difference in potential speed between their popsicle sticks and what we would call a real skateboard.
Nuf sed, I'm off my soapbox!

The helmet thing is a good issue...pics in the mag though?...if it's a good pic I say show it. I also try to enforce the helmet rule with my kids as much as possible.
I still think it would be cool to do a father/son type of article. I realize you'd run out over time...but the mag is not monthly yet. Arab/Nathan, TonyHawk/his kid, Dan Murray/Andrew, Curt Kimbal/his kid, etc.etc. These are good Dad's....not that the Dad's that don't skate are not...but it's not as fun reading about them.

Hmmmm
looks like we got ourselves an interesting debate here....
I like the name Grom Session...or Young Guns...
I wonder about the helmets...Arab makes a good point...my kid can't drop in without a helmet...and yet there are times when he skates without equipment
it's the old do as I say, not as I do.
on another matter, it's amazing...not ONE skate safety gear company has ever inquired about advertising in the mag...or submitted anything for noteworthy. amazing.
as for the mail, it is on its way...just let me know if it doesn't get there by Friday.
unreal post office!

PLEASE make helmets mandatory in Little Ripper photos?? Why? C'mon, now. I just want to see little kids shred. Hey Adam, How about if I worry about my kids, you worry about yours and CW worries about neither.
I bet you are a good anough father that you can raise the kids properly even though they might be exposed to people smoking, drinking, not going to church, and oh yeah, skating without helmets.

I have not gotten my issue either...patiently waiting...I'm sure it will be great. It keeps getting better.
We have a new issue out at www.floridaskater.com, biggest ever. More importantly we have our Old School Skatepark Series. The age groups are 30-39 Masters, and 40 and up Legends. I'm inviting you all with this message. First contest is at Alan Gelfand's Olliewood Bowl, April 17th. You can see pics of this bowl at his site, www.ollieair.com. Be there or be square.

I have just reviewed our mailing list. Mark you are on there. Even your apartment number is on there. We have sent out the issues and with the Vol 2 No 3 - we even sent first class (with a provision to have the issues return if it didn't make it) Yours did not come back. So, I am very puzzled as to what's happening.
I absolutely want to assure you that there is no funny business with this. You are on the list. We sent everything out. I am very frustrated at the postal office. I noticed that you didn't list your appt number below. We have that on file. I will email you directly.
As for everyone else reading, mags were mailed from San Diego and take between 5 to 10 working days to reach you. If they are not there by Tuesday Feb 10th, let me know.
We are at the mercy of the United States Postal service here. However, I promise that if there is a problem we will try our best to work it out.
thanks
