i call that odor "skateshop smell" and whenever i catch a whiff i am immediately transported back to 1977,buying my first serious setup, looking at the wall and just being overwhelmed by the choices,it also reminds me of my first ride on red kryptos.ahhhhhhhhh

Mike,
I've got a viewer and three tapes I think. I remember clicking one frame at a time trying to get Stacey's style down.
Oh, what we did before VCR's!

I think the album was "the Incredible Shrinking Dickies" and it contained about 6000 x one minute tunes. Uh, or my memory is failing me. Think it was an optional 10" long player in unspeakably-colourful vinyl, as A&M tended to do, in those days. Ah. New Wave.
Er.
Griptape. Yeah. You know, you can still get that smell if you open up some older electronics (like Macintosh computers, Rockwell calculators, Ferguson cassette recorders). Break open the casing and INHAAALE. I think you're right. It's the remnants of whatever solvent they used to clean wave-soldered boards. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. But if it came in cans...

The biggest disapoitment for me since I got back into skating is the smell of the Griptape. The 3M stuff buck in the '70s obviously used some kind of dangerous solvent in the adhesive that made just hanging around in skate shops addictive. Either that or i've lost some of my sense of smell as i've got older...

Thanks for the great mag! It is like no other. I reluctantly gave my first (#5) to a nice kid. Amazing. They know depth, too.

The Dickies were popular here in the UK for a while, around '78-'79 they got into the charts with a cover of the Banana Splits theme.I remember having thier album but the title escapes me now. One thing that never fails to take me back to '76 when I was 13 is opening the box of a brand new pair of Vans[admit it there's no other smell like it] Oh! and the opening riff of Holidays in the sun by the Pistols.

You know, it's funny, but I was thinking that it's pretty strange what your mind can recall... I haven't thought about the Dickies in years....and yet I remember them well....
I wanted to share with you a few other things that are skate related that somehow are buried deep in the back of my brain....but don't come up very often....
remember.... those viewers that you could order in SkateBoarder that showed people skating...

i have a ton more...but wanted to let others post... so, go ahead...

here are a few more thoughts....
new issue goes to press this week (if certain advertisers get their ads in!!!)
you will see some pretty interesting developments with the mag....
we are getting jackets done up...not shirts....jackets. they are kinda like golf jackets with logo on front and big logo on the back - embroided....
if anyone is interested in ordering, email me...

DVD Idea

Mike,
I think it is a great idea...from a customer standpoint, it would be great to have "best of" various company/team footage segments like Gravity, Sector Nine, or Black Lable on one source.
Another idea would be to have CW readers submit video clips of their skate sessions and create a compilation DVD of OS and longboard skaters.

Cliff and Sergio Sliding article

That would be a great read. Techniques (if they are willing to let out any secrets!) and interviews would be killer. This is exactly the kind of thing CW covers, Chevy. CW is 100% Skateboarding and what Cliff and Sergio do is 100% Skateboarding. I don't think CW can be defined by saying it's an Old School mag. It's more an ALL SCHOOL mag. I bet since you asked for an article on those guys you shall see one.

So, here's a question....
I would like to gather a "best of" compilation from various companies and individuals who have released videos and dvd's over the past several years. It would be kind of like a K-Tel collection of greatest hits....or a Readers Digest
This is just an idea...I don't know if any companies would be interested in doing this. We would make the DVD available to subscribers and if it was possible print up enough to polybagg with the magazine as a nice bonus.
Of course, to create 12,000 dvd's you are looking at some significant dollars, but I think it would be a very effective promotion.
DVD's are FLAT and are very simple to handle (if you are sending a magazine at the same time!)...videos would be tough!
If you have any thoughts, email me or post 'em up.

Ok the easy one's first:
concrete wave tv will be airing in the US (finally!!) on Fox's new extreme sports network starting July.
If you get the Extreme Channel in the UK (and beamed all around the world except North America), you can see all 3 seasons (39 episodes) regularly.
Outdoor Life Network in Canada might air old shows...
HOWEVER, there is now a best of season one. You can win copies in our upcoming readership contest (the world's smallest readership survey - honest!) and you can visit concretewavetv.com to buy your very own copy.
Next issue is #6 (vol 2. no. 1). This issue features Sector 9 team on the rampage at Vegas pools and ditches, a pretty big piece on freestyle, the Paso Rables slalom contest and lots of other goodies. The main attraction is the 10 page Portfolio from Steve Sherman (skate legend from G&S and topnotch photographer).
Trust me, you will want to be wearing a bib for this issue...you will be drooling....
As for longboarding, you will see everything... Longboarding is a gateway drug...once you get back into skateboarding (or you pick it up and find yourself following the direction and vibe of Concrete Wave) you will see that it's all good. This means I will continue to showcase everything....
Of course, I will try and put longboarding in there as much as I can!
Please, if you like the mag, phone or email the advertisers and tell em!!!
cheers michael

Hello Michael, nice mag- I like your style! I'm badly infected with the longboarding- virus and I'd like to read as much longboard- related articles in your mag as possible (especially after International Longbooarder's Magazine went down because of YOU- just kidding). What about a riding techniques section? I think of photo series of coleman slides or how- to's about footbraking or tucking...
