Concrete Wave Magazine is celebrating its first year anniversary with a huge skate contest at the Cummer Skatepark on June 21st. Registration begins at 9:00 am. This park is located at Leslie & Cummer Streets in Toronto...don't believe everything you read - life continues here, even with SARS outbreak!
I encourage all of you to get involved with your local park and arrange contests. Our event features a timed race through the park and of course the required "best trick" and "highest ollie."
We'll be showcasing freestyle, bowl and slalom too.
Spread the word...maybe you have family here in Toronto, or maybe you live in a bordering US city (Ohio, Michigan, NY...come on down!!)

Sk8ting with your kids

Well my oldest is 21 and is just stated a moderate interest in starting to sk8 for the pure fun of it again.
Maybe watching his 6 month ols son (my grandson) taking his first rides last week may have helped that thought enter his mind. HA,HA,HA.
Skating with your kids is great. Actually skating with kids is great period. Maybe that's why I love coaching so much. Lots of stories lots of fun.
Both my boys have done TV apperances with me. The oldest was about 4 or 5 and the youngest(now 17)at 18 months old. In 93 I ran a contest series based on the CASL program and my youngest 7 at the times won the points series beating his older brother and others in the process in the 12 and under. Rick McCrank won the sponsored 17 and over division.
I've been kidding with the kids about my new goal. It is now to get my Grandson on TV before he reaches the age my youngest one was when he made his debut. You've got to have a goal.
My daughter has skated from time to time (she's 18) and since Boston 2002 she has Slalommed a couple of times and is looking forward to getting out this year.
I just assembled 5 loaner board for Slalom clinincs and sk8 classes. It should be a busy summer.

I do my best to instill only goodness in my little girl.(JASMYN,4) Why should she not be subjected to the skate spots and all of the wonderful family that surrounds this community? Skaters are the most down-to-earth, hard-core, down for each other type of people you'll ever meet. Surrounding myself and my family with such inspiration will surely prove positive. Why couldn't my mom skate???

Do you skate with your kids? Do you have any good stories to tell?
I have three kids - both sons, ages 2 and 7 are CRAZY about skateboarding....
in fact, now that warm weather is here, the 2 year old has gone mental for skating...we were out at 8:30 am this morning - just trucking down the street.
We've had good feedback on the Curt and Willis Kimbel piece and I wanted to do more stories like this.
So, if you are a former pro and you skate with your kids, get in touch with me...

Still haven't got my CW. Is there a way I can check to see if I ever was added to the subscriber list by the skateclub guy to whom I PayPalled the funds months ago? I'm sweating this a bit, since I haven't missed an issue thus far, and you just stated you're out of #5. What do I do? I have a stack next to my bed consisting of 2 copies of Skateboarder from '77 (including the one autographed by Tome Inouye, Gregg Weaver, and Stacy Peralta) a couple Action Nows, a few first year Thrashers, and CW #1-4, Help!!

yes, more downhill will appear along with more slalom, freestyle, pipe, pool, ditch and anything else that is related to skateboarding... high jump and barrel jump for sure! cabbage - fancy a rematch? this time I won't have a broken toe! Mike, Kevin and the chaps at Gravity should have extra copies for you!
Sadly, we are COMPLETELY OUT OF #5! So, the only way to get it is via Barnes & Noble or Hastings.

Should we expect to see more speedboard and downhill stuff in the mag??? Downhill is blowing up the whole skate scene in 2003 and foreward. Lets face it. There is NO other part of skateboarding that is more exciting or more extreme than downhill. Anyone can ollie. It takes balls to get er up to 60mph. and thats a place not many have been. I wanna know...can Tony downhill???

this first run at "big time distribution" was limited to about 2,500 at select B & N's...there are copies out there...however, they are pretty hard to find.
NEXT issue, I promise the magazine will be MUCH easier to find: more Barnes and Noble, Borders, Virgin megastore etc.
The mag just got on the newsstand on May 21...it takes a bit of time to work its way through the system....
Hopefully, folks will see it, get excited, buy a copy and I'll have to print 20,000 next issue!!!

Thank you, thank you! It's freakin' 6 am here in Toronto and you've made my day. The Gang of Four story is hilarious. I wish we could put music in the mag, but there is no way I am going to do this. We say 100% skateboarding and that's that.
Still, I think the concept of a magazine that would discuss concert/music experiences would be cool.
Keep the memories coming...I saw the Stranglers in the UK many years ago...opening act..a bunch of female body builders.
As for skate legends, amazing....truly amazing. I knew that book would wind up somewhere...I figured Ed's Discount Book Hut, but then, who knows how things really work when it comes to book distribution...

in 1980 i was living in gainsville florida (i don't know WHY!). the 10 or so punkers on campus stuffed the ballot box for the halloween bash and as a result, we got the gang of four, instead of cool and the gang. welllllll, the whole town had gone a 'shrooming' so by the time the concert started, we were all pretty much one with the universe. now while the gang of four was giving everybody a hard time for being suburban rich kids i watched this punker with a richard nixon mask on, walk up and down the huge line of alachua county sherrifs and highway patrolmen who were rimming the stage. he would stop at every 3'rd cop or so , and berate them in a perfect nixon voice for some aspect of their uniform being wrong. the cops were quivering with rage, but were under strict orders to leave the kids alone. it was at that time that i realized that there WAS a GOD , and that he was on OUR SIDE!
