I don't know about where you live, but damn, it's hot out here...
In fact, it's too hot to skate. This heatwave is mental
This got me thinking....
Back in 1980 there was a new wave festival called Heatwave...B-52's, Costello, Pretenders etc...
Sadly, i couldn't be there. but it made me wonder....
if I could go back in time (with all the skate knowledge and boards that I have now) where would I go?
I'm thinking it might be fun to show up at the 1975 Del Mar (Bahne-Cadallic) contest!
Any one else want to discuss?

I have once again been blown away by the production of the newest CONCRETE WAVE.
Michael put a little note from the editor titled "Coping Mechanisim." If you haven't seen it you should, along with the rest of the mag.
Thank you for all of your hard work and effort to spread the love to all that'll listen. GOD knows the WAVE has got my full attention.
Always glad to be barreled by the Concrete Wave....

Here's an incomplete list from me;
TK & TWAY - Da Farm 1.0, The first foray into slalom for Nick and me. Nicky got a board, the 9/11 fund got $500. 2.0 was even better (honorable metion to Steve "Purple" Hayes for the amazing party afterwards). 3.0 is poised to raise the bar in competition and baccanalia.
GBJ's Gathering- I know the West Coast guys PooPoo this annual love in, but it too gets better every year, brining more and more people to our sport, and raising the level of competition on the east coast.
Turner Summerski - JG and Howard got the grand old man of slalom skateboarding making boards again. It proved that we were hungry for new equipment, and whats more, would pay for it. Cheers to Rick, Gareth, and Chicken for casting there lots in and making beautiful, fast boards.
The Mad Truck Scientists - Howard for the TTC, PVD for his GED, Mcree and that Knuckle bearing, and guys like Geezer X and Chicken that are making existing trucks better. Great designs that stick like tape. We would all fall down a lot more without you guys.
Kenny - In person and on line, he's anything but boring. His DVD's get circulated as propaganda and training tools. Along with CW, they've been a huge help in advancing the sport.
Guys that put on races - Parsons, Red Clay, the St. Louis Boys, Jani, The Byrds, LBK, Strider and the UK boys. FCR gets huge thanks for really geting competition going again, but the grass roots efforts of individuals to spread the word is invaluable. It brings slalom to the masses and and provide an outlet for those of us not residing in CA.
My 7 yr old son and Team Turner member, Nick Iacovelli - Without Nick showing interest and getting involved, I would not be skating again. His enthusiasm is contagious and his abilities increase each time we ride. Concentrating on getting around that next cone or just feeling the wind on my face is a major distraction from the weight of the world, and I would not have remembered it without him.

You know those days that you have "a moment of clarity?"
the moment when everything just comes into focus and you have a BREAKTHROUGH...a damn fine idea!
Well, today I had one of those days....
I was thinking about hosting some type of Concrete Wave Contest in California and letting folks duke it out in a variety of disciplines to establish the King of Concrete...but then realized that this would be duplicating other people's ideas...plus, I live 3000 miles away...
So, then I took a look back at some of the postings and I realized...it's time to recognize those who have done so much to progress this skate renaissance.
Every few weeks, I'd like to take a few posts and recognize these people who have given so much to drive skateboarding in more than one direction....
But it won't just be me nominating...
You can nominate anyone....but be prepared to write a little blurb about them!
have fun with this folks and as always, add your two cents...
My first few people:
1) Adam @ NCDSA
proof that one passionate guy, with an idea and heapin' amount of technical ability can generate change - without taking $8000 ads in magazines!
2) Jack Smith - Conehead
For helping to orchestrate the rebirth of slalom and for bringing back Bahne!
3) Dan Gesmer of Seismic - Mr. Perseverance
You might not know this, but while you were away at college or washing cars or doing everything BUT skating, Dan was a lone wolf out there imploring folks to TURN...this was 11 YEARS AGO (see Transworld from 88 - Learn to Turn)
4) Cliff Coleman
Go back and view the Powell Peralta videos...now fast forward 20 years....still sliding after all these years.
5) Hogtown Pete
This is local hero....but he is found in every city of North America...Pete started Hogtown 20 years ago...and while he has less hair than he did back in the 80's , he has always had a full shop...filled of course with popsicle decks AND longboards and related equipment. Yes, you can buy Abec 11 in Canada...you just have to find a forward thinking retailer. Remember shops...a customer is a customer...

Someone lost an elbow pad
first guy he asked was the old homeless guy
"Hey what're those pads yer wearin'?" he sez.
Ol dude simply showed him that they weren't his then proceeded to point out where the lost item had fallen behind the bench.
Not having witnessed this, cfavero tells me he was flowin' this hard core homeless guy one of his prized quiver (Skull'nCross reissue, Indys and blah blah wheels). After making Charlie's day cfavero thanks me for sponsoring him all of his slalom gear. I respond with something about keepin' the flow...
...reminds me of the Buddha killin' it on the road.

I'm hanging and working with a KNOWN CANADIAN on a Skate Magazine that's getting started at the beginning of another market downturn.
What could be riskier than that?
Of course the fact that we're loved by people that actually have jobs and aren't dependent on their allowance is a large blessing.

we are 60 days into this forum and it has exceeded my expectations.
almost 12,000 visitors...in 2 months - not bad.
my thanks to adam for his ongoing support.
In order to celebrate the 2 month anniversary,
I wanted to restart the discussion on change within skateboarding...Some of you maybe familiar with a guy called Seth Godin - I base many of my marketing ideas and strategies on his work...thankfully, things seem to be paying off.
Here's what Seth wrote a few months back...I think it speaks volumes....it is precisely why there is such an energy here at the NCDSA and why the "regular" popsicle stick market is going through a bit of crisis.
Seth writes...
"If you think you're being risky, you're doing the safest thing you can. If you're playing it safe, you're taking a big risk. McDonald's is playing it safe. They need to do things that feel risky. "
Substitute the word McDonald's for any number of skate board marketers and you see why things appear so myopic...things look the same in the mags and videos because its the SAFEST thing to do...
What risks are you taking to change the face of skateboarding?

mike, anthonys' post really WAS wonderful. you know, there is this girl who i see all the time at my local park. she would sit on the deck all afternoon and watch. i asked around and the story was that life at home was really grim and the skatepark was a refuge. problem was she didn't have a board ,nor was one forthcoming from home(read poor folks) so i took an old board that was too narrow for me(8") put a pair of inexpensive trucks and some extra wheels that i did not use and gave it to her.it didn't cost much and boy was she ever happy to have something to ride!
skating saved me from a LOT of potential trouble in my youth, and it made me feel so good to pass a little of it along. so all of you folks should try this sometime,it is good for the soul,yours and theirs'.

glad the CW party went off good. Right on 42 inches is high as poop..but 52 inches is when M Brooke and myself max'ed out.high jumping of course.

just got home from first day of sk8 camp, them kids are wear'n me out..finally some good weather back east...
oh yeah, Brian Wainwright rules, backyard pool, on roller skates.He is the best hands down. Roller sk8ing rules!!!To put it nicely I personaly am not down with inline sk8ing, and homosexuality, but thats my gig. Sorry to the gay inliners that read this board.

the new issue is out...
yes, it arrived in California today...
and subscribers issues have been sent out...
this issue marks a bit of a departure...
we've gone to a 7 point card stock cover and tightened
up the overall look ...
if you happen to stumble on to the issue, please send me your thoughts...
next issue hits in late August...
Again, my thanks to ALL that help in creating the magazine and the vision that rests within the covers.

Farid, I've found that this is anything but true. Posts come in a wide range of flavors from jovial and informative to caustic and offensive.. and everything in between. It's the old "shades of gray" problem. Some attacks are blatantly written, others quite subtly. And then there's the sticky issues of "talking smack" and politics.
When and where to intervene as an editor is not always an easy or obvious decision. Err on the side of caution and you're called a brutal censor; err on the side of laissez faire and you're dubbed accommodating, or worse.
Letting folks crash and burn by their own hand is something I've always tried to do over our six year history. In some cases it works; in other cases not -- it really depends on the perception of the subsequent readers of the forum. Smart ones will ignore the offensive post, letting it die silently on stage like a time-worn joke.
One thing that has helped is our Rate This Post voting system that removes a post after three members vote it as abusive.

Dear editor of NCDSA,
Attacks are attacks.... whether it's directed towards a group or an individual, they both are unnecessary. It should be consistent were both stay or both are removed. Removing = Censorship. Keeping them on makes the person that wrote the attacks look like a total a**holes. I think the public and your general "subscribers" can see what is going on. The other suggestion is to let the moderator of the particular list decide. Afterall, Michael Brooke is a magazine publisher and makes wise judgements. Except for a couple detours, his column has been the most positive pro-active list on the whole web-site.
Remember, you can't reason with stupid people because they are stupid. Let them crash and burn on there own doing.

Now hear is the big question: Since skateboarding is an important part of (North) American History, especially pertaining to "Pop" culture; How do we get it recognized by the school systems to have an elective history class titled "The History of Skateboarding"? Maybe your books and magazine can be required reading? Maybe you can become Professor Brooke? They can also tie it in with a PE classes, a school club, or inter-school competition?
Can you imagine: The school's star Quarterback is an "outcast" and all the skaters get the girls! (We always have, anyhow! But it's good to be the King!)
