Stop it y'all, I'm just an old fat guy who doesn't skate enough any more.
Yes, I was in Folly Beach in '02 and I met Michael there (loved skating the bus depot), but he showed up in South Florida not long after that; ran into him on one of my first trips back into a skate park since the 70's. I didn't even skate that night, but I did shoot video, plus I ran into a lot of people I used to know back in the day. If I'm not mistaken our man MB was carving a long halfpipe at the Y on a slalom board that night. Freak.
Speaking of freaks, yup punk zine, band photographer, radio show host, guest list for lfe...the 80's were fun...

Marion, thank you for your gracious offer... if my boys and I ever get out that way, I'll look ya up. Same goes to you if you ever venture to So Cal.
Speaking of skating together, yesterday was my younger boy's 13th birthday. So, after the beach, we skated Vans/Orage from 10a-1p. No one there and we had a rad sesh. Then, it was off to the local seafood eatery to ingest some much needed nutrients. GREAT day to spend the day... hangin' out w/my kids!

Anthony, I am doing the rocket scientist thing in Florida and skating when I get the chance (not often enough these days, we have a 2-year-old in the house who demands lots of attention). Send me an email if you want...

Skating does have a lot of cool parents/families doing their thing with the younguns:
Joe I and Nick The McClarens The Byrds Sumdumsurfer crew The Kludys The Chapmans Cfav's Cnova's The Ruml's DHB Darren "Dholt" Holt with his nephew Cody (a great story there) DHB Evan "The Saint" St. Clair with his wife Steph, son Nathan and step-son Dustin Mollica with Ryder (only a matter of time!) Claude Regnier and his crowd
Me with my newbie skater daughter Hannah
These are the one's I can think of just off the top of my head. I am sure there are many many many more!
Sumdum and Kludy: You guys rock! Got to skate with you both someday...Hey Kludy, the offer still stands (same goes for you Sumdum), if you get to North Carolina you and your son are welcome at the Hammerhead Skate Hostile.

My homeowners insurance went up by 15% this year to cover the insurance company losses from those hurricanes. Same thing happened after September 11. You don't have to live in paradise to be troubled by it. As a former president once said, "I feel your pain".

I am 45 I think,my son is 18 . we just got back from a 4 day skate trip and to spend time with him and to race beside him is something I would never dream could happen. We are very close and share every thing in our lives. Just to ride a skateboard is great but to ride one with my son is the best thing in my life right now. He loves and respects me very much as I do him, thats a great thing.I like sharing and my youngest son is almost at the age that justin was when he started and Kyle is takin a liking to speed, thats cool!

you know, i can't really explain this, but i am having one of those good day/bad day days....there is a silver lining...but I am seeing a whole bunch of clouds.
the source of my frustration is moving books from warehouse A to warehouse B. It's taken 3 months..and nothing has happened.
On the other hand, lots of great stuff is happening for this new issue...
Please, share your pain so I don't feel 100% crappy...

Marion posted: "Open the door to the outside and drag your kid out there and show them how awesome the real world can be... as long as you give some effort to see it!"
Amen to THAT, brother! I was raised very much like you... we had awesome parents that loved to be outdoors, livin' life and they had a great sense humor. So, my ex-wife and I continue to raise our boys like we were. We spend a lot of time with them. I've had my boys on skateboards since before they could walk and surfing since they were four years of age. We surf and skate together every chance we get. Next year, one starts high school and the younger one finishes junior high school. I'm stoked that being on our boards keeps us even closer. We're beyond the parent/kid relationship... more like a great friendship. I implore every parent out there to spend as much time as humanly possible with your kids. Because they have most of their lives to be adults, but they're only kids for a very short while. Sorry to drone on, but parenting is the one thing that I take rather seriously. Everything else is just life and good times.
Carry on.

presence vs presents

wow, so many posts, so little time...
I really believe that Marion nailed it. The fact that I skate with my kids is something I know is a huge deal in their lives. My 5 year old was begging me for a skate session yesterday...it was pretty late in the afternoon and like 46 degrees...but he's up for skating any place or any time!
I know we've talked about this about before....but my sense is that parents that skate with their children are creating a unique bond that is absolutely priceless.
Growing up, skateboards were something I had to beg for...My parents sensed my addiction but tempered it something fierce. It was frustrating, but understandable. Now that I am a parent, I make the rules. And the rule in my house is that skateboarding is treated like a necessity...therefore they DON'T count as birthday presents!
Speaking of presence...Marion is so right when it comes to this...your time is the best present you can give your children...man, I sound like DR. phil!
