I'm sure Chris (clingfilm) will answer this "is it free?" question when he picks up on it. To relate my personal experience... I just recently sent off my £20 membership to UKSSA in anticipation of being able to race for the first time at Eastbourne later this month. Chris told me I didn't have to pay anything until I decided I liked it i.e. first event is completely free, no membership, no entrace fee, nothing.

I told him to bank the cheque. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned. I just can't believe, and am completely in awe, of the amount of time and energy some people put into this sport.

Debate
On 7/1/2003 Squid wrote in from (217.39.nnn.nnn)

Hi Gavin,

Listen I was not getting personal with any one - my comment wa based on the posts I have seen here over the last few months revolveing around epic, brans and now bude and Hayle - To be honest I can understand why people wouldn't want to pay laodsa money to join, then again I also understand that if people want something for nothing thats normally what they get nothing! Your down there all the time Gavin, I read that Micheal has left cones all around, and to be honest for what the cones cost any one can buy then and set up simialr style events to what the UKSSA do and not charge anything for it. I think that everyone has had a good point but I am telling you as fact that I know no one who will work for free, then have to deal with the 'observations' of other people who are not doing the work, and I'm not talking about setting up a few cones. I feel this strongly about all of this as I was involved in Urban Boards and Re:Creation I have in the past tried to arrange free days, sk8 workshops and various other events. Interestingly the ones that work best, that is to say the ones that most poeple come to are the paid events. I think there is something in peoples mind that says if it is free its not that important. As for people trying slalom for free to see if they like it - shove some cones down on the day and try - no one will charge for that, if you want to experience racing through cones (Which would mean that you would already have tried slalom as you are unlikely to race the first time on a board) then surely part of that expeerience should be like all other sporting competions not just sk8ing and it should be paid for. I might not be able to Slalom that well but I would be happy to show people what it is all about as I'm sure would any of the boys there, and for free. If on the other hand people want to race, be timed, feel like something official is happening around them not just a bunch of us turning up to hyde park then money has to be involved. Money makes the world go round, it also makes people pay attention. I promise this though I am not moaning about any one complaint or complainer it seems to be a genral thing within the UKSSA and as I say I am not even a part of that but I really feel for clingfilm as it is something I wouldn't do for you all and by now if I had taken as many 'observations' as he has I would have told everyone to.....I doubt the boy has even had a drink bought for him! Well I'll be the first to offer him one - so clingfilm if you are reading this I think you should charge, I thank you for the work and effort you are putting in and come the weekend I'm looking forward to buying you a beer (No matter how much it costs! LOL)

peace

Freebies

I too was under the impression that free was "free". Didnt realise you had to pay to join UKSSA. Dont know what to think.
but what you do get is a starter, a finisker, coneheads and accurate timing and penalty counts. Plus prizes too.

a few points..

firstly i did not make my post to start a fight, it was just to open the debate about encouraging new comers to the sport esp in the sw which is where i live and so have a vested interest.

secondly, unless i've misunderestood its not a 'free' first event. you still have to join the ukssa costing £20. i have no problem with this and am happy to pay.

thridly, do not insult me that i'm after a free ride. i've offered on a number of occasions to come down early and help set up on both days. i'm prepared to put in the effort, not my problem you obviously don't need the help.

so all i'm saying is that in order to support the first sw event its going to cost 30quid (20 membership and 10 for the next day) which in my opinion will deter people. but then again with a aggressive quotes to newcomers who've tried to make the effort like..'i do not think it is fair for people who have paid and supported the ukssa, to buy the timing kit etc. to support new commers ' and 'i am bored of telling you this and if you can't pay don't use the resources'... its not exactly encouraging!

Clarifications
On 7/1/2003 Michael wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Just to make it clear, my suggestion of a fiver to race at Hayle and Bude was for newbies. Kind of if you raced at both you paid a fiver each, tenner in total for newbies. The idea being that you might race at Bude and decide to do Hayle, all for a tenner. Which is more than free. Boy that was confusing.

Having just paid to race in Switzerland and the bloomin organisers couldnt count cones, notice if riders were actually going the right way round cones, or have the sense to KEEP the results of Saturdays racing the UKSSA do a great job. And racing in the states is often $100 or more. Remember Clingfilm bought the timing gear BEFORE he had the money.

Hmmm ..Clingfilms post makes a tone of sense.
I think that the choice of EITHER Bude or Hayle as a freebie is reasonable. My advice would be to try Hayle if its your first race as you'll get a ton of skating under your belt. After all Bude is a limited time window. The first race free deal is a great way of encouraging racing. There is nothing to stop West Country skaters borrowing cones from Random Rides, Air Culture or Revolver and doing races yourselves. Thats why I gave them to those stores. Use Them. Have fun. Practioce, then enter a comp.

UKSSA
On 7/1/2003 Squid wrote in from (217.39.nnn.nnn)

Just a quick question really, I was wondering why everybody complains about paying to race within the UKSSA, don't get me wrong I'm not a wobbler so this has nothing to do with me, but I have read what clingfilm has to say and I really feel for the guy! I think you lot who are complaining about paying to race should be asshamed of yourselves, unless you have complained to Skateclassic for charging, or if you have complained to hot wheels, my point is that you have to pay to race for all comps, especially in these early days when clingfilm is trying to set up a working organisation which involves having money, where else can he raise money if it not through races - Yes I guess t-shirts wallets and things like that branded up and sold, but that takes investment in the 1st place then you have to sell them and if you lot arn't willing to support your races why would you buy a t-shirt to support the association. I find it amazing that it is only in the ukssa that something like this would happen! So next time you think it is too expensive, ask how much you would charge for the time and energy needed to keep the association running and then ask if you would do it for free! The answer for most of you will be no, I'm not willing to do anything for anyone else that takes time and energy - if thats the case then you should shut and pay, or shut up and don't race! Either Clingfilm is on his own and I really do feel for the guy, so I finish with the same question I started with ' Why do you complain about paying to race!' Answers on a postcard to the usual adress!

Quote of the day - Put your money where your mouth is!

P.S I'm hoping to get rid of this soap box soon! Sorry, normally such a happy camper!

ukssa fees
On 7/1/2003 clingfilm wrote in from (195.195.nnn.nnn)

let me clarify.
there are many implications to decisions i make and i try to raise the best solution. the issue here is should a competitor pay per day, per race, per event, and how does the west coast fit in.
in my opinion bude is different to hayle, different organisers and location, therefore it is two events. this is easy but makes it expensive, and remember i have to pay too, and it is a long way to come for most people.
so i though make it one event to help reduce the costs for members. however i do not think it is fair for people who have paid and supported the ukssa, to buy the timing kit etc. to support new commers to two free events, so the free ride is for one or the other days. if you want to skate both then you need to pay for one.
if i take you back a few months then this was agreed, the free race is to decide if you like it or not, if you do and want to do this again then you have to pay like everyone else, and it is not that much really.
at some events we will have expenses which could have cost £400 based on the original quote, some races i make money and other i lose, but i need the money. the ukssa site has all financial transactions up to where i broke my arm so you can see where your money goes.
i am bored of telling you this and if you can't pay don't use the resources. you pay for what you get with this.
howeverr you can always take over the ukssa and do what you like.

You can't trust a copper, like the old fashioned coppers when you can't find your way home!

I did belive him, he may have been a jumped up little jobs worth but he got so much pleasure in annocing that secatary of state thing I do belive him!

It is just endemic of the attitude we have to face, like being told 'Arn't you too old for sk8ing' or 'Isn't that for kids' or 'Don't you realise how dangerous it is sk8ing in the road' All of this s#@!e has to be battled, the last comment came from an old bill along the Hackney road, but because I knew the law he backed off. I understand that no one really wants to have to deal with the establishment but surely it's worth it - some of us have kids (Not me actually so where the us came from I'm not sure!) and I'm sure that the thought of them getting the same s#@!e we do must turn your stomachs - so lets do something about this, Johnny I have read your postings in the past I would have thought you'd be up for some rucks with 'Da Man' anyway I've gotta go and repair my soap box, Monsiour Majour is over soon and we need to discuss eggs! LOL

Gavin, I dont know what the deal is with entry fees for Bude. But things like insurance need to be paid for.
I think its still free if its your first comp.

Bearing in mind the limited nature of the time window for Saturday your right to question the fees, but Sunday should be a whole days racing.

I'll see if Clingfim can clarify the fees. Michael

Banned
On 7/1/2003 Squid wrote in from (217.39.nnn.nnn)

Well I spoke to the Old Bill in the park and they told me that there is a specific declaration by the Secratary of State banning Sk8ing within the Royal Park of Greenwich, the only time we are remotly legal to sk8 there is when the road through the park is open and we have to sk8 on the road obayiing all traffic laws, and they still have the right to kick you out if you get shirty with them at all (Or even if you question the jumped up little hitlers!) For the most part this is not an issue as I have sk8ed there loads and only been kicked out a few times, but it highlights how we need people to be battling for us. There is no reason in the world why we should't be able to use that closed road when it is closed and there are few pedestrians about. If bikes can ride that hill why can't we, because no one ever fights for us! So I take it from the fact only one person said anything about the idea of us getting together a group to fight that we are going to let every one tell us when and where we can sk8 until there is no where left and it will be like the states. I don't mind organising this but I won't do it unless I feel there is a little support. I guess though as this is England and we have a tendancy to moan among ourselves and never acchive anything that we will stick to that Great British Tradition - Even the ozzies and Kiwis have more sk8ing rights than we do - If any of you have been there and sk8ed you know - Security gaurds will stand and watch, I have even known them to help with some filming, there are beutiful concrete parks every where.....well thats them, here we can't sk8 anyhwere without picking up grief and we are not willing to do anything about it!..........Are we?

Gaz's question
On 7/1/2003 PoolHog wrote in from (62.255.nnn.nnn)

Howdy Gaz,
I'm sure that the person you're thinking of is either Si Napper or Jules Gayton. There were loads of marshalls at Skate City, sometimes more marshalls skating than people paying to get in. Rom local Paul Tidiman worked there for a while, which meant all us lot got in for nothing! I think we skated there more after it closed. Anyone know of a site with GOOD photo's of the place? I've got loads of old 70's mags with pic's, but they're not really all that good. My mum has got one with Sablosky, Kadir, Paul Tidiman, Vince Scanlon and myself. It was taken on the day "Skateboarder" shot loads, do you remember Sablosky's front cover? He's kick turning frontside and you can see his toe poking through the worn out sole of his Van's!
Sablosky's coming over in the autumn, I spoke to him last night and he's trying to set a date. He's quite reclusive nowdays, I think over indulgence has taken it's toll, but he's looking forward to coming back to Rom and see some old faces. Paul Tidiman is skating hard again and Vince Scanlon & Robbie Hunter have been seen on the odd occassion, anyone seen Winston May or Paul Sully of late?

Bored and thinking (Shock Horror!)_
On 6/30/2003 Squid wrote in from (217.39.nnn.nnn)

I have been thinking today about various things that I have read on the site, I haven't been on it for a while so I got to see it with fresh eyes, and I feel this forum is a great forum for political debate, all of us here are effected by politics in our everyday sk8ing (Sectary of state banning sk8 boards in Greenwich park) there are various things from harassment from Police to harassment from locals. I think we should set up some sort of Lobbying group to protect sk8ers interests. We could start small at first, if we get our knickers in a twist about something a few of us could e-mail government, if it starts to have an effect we would all benefit, we might be able to find ways of raising awareness in a positive way as well by doing sponsored sk8s and getting it on the news so people start to think as sk8ers having a heart and a brain! I have read so many times that this is not a site for political debate, and while I would agree discussing the WTO might be unwarranted but discussing issues that effect planning of sk8 parks road closures for races blah blah blah, well who knows what could be created, after all most of the establishment vastly underestimate us as a political force, but when you think about how many people sk8.....Just remember political parties have discovered the pink vote, the women vote and the environmental vote, what about the sk8 vote - SPLITTER!

Bude
On 6/30/2003 clingfilm wrote in from (195.195.nnn.nnn)

I plan to make the Bude and Hayle one event, which will reduce costs for everyone. However with my breadhead on I think if it is your first event you can only do one for free, either Bude or Hayle.

Remember 10am start at Bude on Saturday, and 12.00pm start at Hayle.

Also you will be allowed to miss three races or have your top races taken into account for the series, so do not woory if you have missed one event. If there is a draw then top place counts, I'll explain more later if anyone is interested.

I can also give you all the gory details about my arm, the 18 stitches, floating bones and the embedded bike spanner!!!
