Board Review
SoulCarver
On 11/24/2000 tropicalian wrote in from (150.131.nnn.nnn)

I would have to agree on the quality of business there at SoulCarver. I ordered some randals from them, and it was top notch service. Maybe I'll look into getting a board, but I'm pretty satisfied with the fibreflex for now.

sherman classic cruiser
On 11/24/2000 Kanoa wrote in from (206.133.nnn.nnn)

I never tried the van B but one of my fav boards is the classice cruiser 52", it gets the most attention out of all my boards for it's classic looks and length , not to mention that it's as smooth as I cadillac, my weight 180, I use indy 215's and fu-manchu's(80mm) I recomend 1/2 to 3/4" riser pads for wheel bite, I made some out of wood and striped them to match the board so they look factory, I've only been up to 45mph on so I don't know how stable it is but it was as smooth as silk at that speed.

For anyone looking for an high quality longboard for under $100, check out Soulcarver longboards. They are usually available on Ebay, just search for "soulcarver" (one word). I purchased a complete recently, and was impressed not only with the price (including Aluminators, RII's, and Terminator bearings), but the the professional, yet personal service afforded by this company. This guy puts a lot into each bord that HE makes, and was a great help. The board shipped almost immediately, and I have been extremaly happy with it's performance(not to mention the great value.) These have got to be one of the best values for those looking for a first deck, or those looking to expand a quiver. Randy deserves the business, so why not support a small company with your dollars. And the board arrived in less than a week from the end of the auction. I am in no way affiliated with this company, other than in the form of an extremely satisfied customer.

So it takes a counter-sink bolt head rather than the old-school flat head bolts that flexdex and hang ten use.

Since I use gravity angled riser pads on my vanbommer, I use both 1 1/2 inch and 2 inch Gravity mounting hardware. It all depends on what size riser pads that your going to use. Hope this helps.

sherman's shrimp and skate company
On 11/21/2000 SXE PHIL wrote in from (12.78.nnn.nnn)

I've been riding my vanbommer for over 3 years now and I love the board. When I first got it I used to have people come up to me and sweat my board because of it's classic look (skateshops in my area really only carried S9 and gravity at the time), a couple of shops I even brought it into like it so much they said they were going to check into sherman's and order some decks for the store, cause they looked so sweet. I use this board for surfskating, carving hills, and sliding. To me it's an all around good board and when I kill it I'm going to order another one. Oh Yeah, Jake, they also make the classic cruiser in 13-ply for the big boys. Later all. WWW.Shermanskates.com

Used equipment
On 11/20/2000 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

Phil, The problem with used Cherry Bombs is they are still such a good practice wheel for streetluging that they maintain a high utility value and I never sell, lend or give them away! Try the eXkate Turbos in black or red (better dyes). They are really just like a smaller Cherry Bomb at a much better price. Give me a shout if you're interested in those or some R-II's.

I'll have to measure the wheelbase on my waterski. The other important thing is the amount of nose and tail that you are left with. I'm looking into wide Invaders for a long fun board (see Decks review dor more), I think they are very inexpensive and may work well for you too.

Drakkars, I know, Iknow, I know. They were free and I needed something at the time. I've heard that once you "pop", you can't stop. I never started and it's too late now. It's kind of funny. In the last couple of weeks I've been to a freestyle contest in San Francisco, done standup (speedboarding) at GMR, tight slalom, longboard GS, shortboard GS, inline GS and buttboarding at West LA College, streetluging with friends and the only guy who I saw ollie was Darryl (Flyin' Hawaiian) Freeman. He's still young. Perhaps if we get him an exorcist he can be cured ;-) Perhaps if there weren't so damn many ways to have fun on a board that rolls and turns I'd learn too. Maybe next millenium.

So I just looked at their website (shermanskates.com) and I think those are some tight friggin boards! The thing is, as with all boards I want, I don't know if it could hold me w/o too much flex (240 lbs). i really do like the design though. Anyone know if tracker wells would work with randal trucks or would it be misaligned?

sherman shrimp and skate
On 11/20/2000 david wrote in from (209.178.nnn.nnn)

i have the vambommer pintail, its a very good board. I would recommed buying just the deck beacuse the tracker trucks are't that good. I just slapped some r-2s on the board and now it rides very nice. It could be a little more flexibility but i only weight 150 lbs. As for quality, i've bailed off my board and have it hit a sidewalk and its held up quite well. does anybody know how the owner of the compeny decided to combine shrimping and skating into one compnay??

Sherman's Shrimp and skate Company
On 11/19/2000 Gjipstra wrote in from (165.247.nnn.nnn)

I am a begginer and am looking for a good board to start out with. I have been looking at the Lake Tahoe boards but I have also found this company called Shermans shrimp and skate Company that makes Longboards. I like the look of Shermans boards but im not sure is they are quality boards the Complete comes with Tracker B2 trucks, Kryptonic 65mm wheels and abec 3 trucks. On the other hand, I have read a lot about the Lake Tahoe boards and know I can count on one of those being a good board but I dont quite like the look of their boards as much. I was just wondering what anyone else would do in my position and if anyone knows anything about Shermans Shrimp and Skate Company?

I haven't tried my Seismics on a waterski yet but think they'd work well. You'll want a truck that turns quickly without having to loosen them up all the way. The Randal "R-II" with eXkate Turbos would be an excellent choice. I'm sure the Power Paw and Kryptonics fans would be better to ask about which flavor they recommend.

Waterskis
On 11/16/2000 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

Phil, The waterski in question was purchased in a thrift store when I was in college (SDSU circa 1982) and is a lightweight wood laminate that has a lot of rocker in it. It makes for a slow waterski but a real fun longboard. Some people like to keep the fins on them and mount them on the top but I'd suggest taking everything off and just griptaping the entire top. Mine has some very old Tracker Six-Tracks and very hard old wheels from the eighties called "Ollies" (gasp). I've always liked hard wheels that won't grab half way through a slide and these are rocks.

Waterskis are fun boards to own. Although I recognize them instantly, others look at them and are always curious about what you're riding. Put your trucks in far from the ends to keep the wheelbase short and learn to live without kickturning easily. Fiberglass, wood, plastic, whatever, find one and learn to love it. I've been riding garage sale, thrift shop, thrown away, spotted in the attic and begged the owner for waterskis since 1975 and they hold a special place in my heart. Enjoy!

RE: waterski longboard
On 11/15/2000 tropicalian wrote in from (150.131.nnn.nnn)

Phil,
I'm not sure of Chris C.'s set up. This summer I bought two old Dick Pople model waterski's from a thriftshop for ten bucks, and my friend and I each made a 44" out of them. the vertical lamination of the wood is sweet, and telling people you made the skate is something you can take pride in(of course you didn't *make* the waterski, but you can cut and trim to your desire.)
The only problem I've had is that they are a bit too narrow. It's hard to find a good wide waterski. Check the thriftshops and flea markets, make sure you drill the holes true, and take pride in your work.
Homemade boards are the best in my opinion.
*Jays

s9 nosewalker
On 11/15/2000 roysetfire wrote in from (195.66.nnn.nnn)

Well, I finally got a longboard. In the skateshop I tried the Nosewalker, the Classic Stain pintail and some Soul Board thingies, but I just fell in love with the nosewalker .. yay! I know it's really big and we don't have hills or mountains over here in the netherlands so that kind of sucks. Anyway, I got Sector 9 Luke Nosewalker with Independent trucks (dunno the size.. should figure that out)and raisers and 65 mm Kryptonics wheels.. it rides sooooo sweet :). I don't think I'm going to use my normal skateboard very often anymore. I'm wondering if there's some dutch longboard association too :/
