Guys, I can't wait to run some cones on that bad-boy!

OK, I wanted to announce to members of my LB and slalom family that there will be a new member of the family coming along in a few months (in about 7 months). I'm going to be a daddy! The little shredder already has its first pair of Vans!

On 5/30/2005 ben wrote in from United States  (66.190.nnn.nnn)

The pavement is smooth, there is a breeze off the river and some shade. All the passersby were friendly and the cops did not bust us for skating in Charleston. It is flat. The road is blocked for about 4 miles and you can pump your way down and back. (4 miles of flat ground is rare in this state). This is the best thing Charleston has done, ever.

Boulevard closed for the summer
On 5/29/2005 Marc F. wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

The Boulevard in Charleston WV is closed for the summer on Sundays from 3 to 7. This will be the sight for the Downhill Billies 50 cone flatland Regatta Skate Jam Sept 4, 2005. The course is completely flat so it takes some serious pumping. The Regatta is the biggest event of the year in Charleston WV so there will be plenty of spectators. The Regatta race will be from 1 to 5 on Sunday Sept 4, 2005.

gates of he!!
On 5/27/2005 ben wrote in from United States  (66.190.nnn.nnn)

We have a gate at our little skatepark and with it are some definite downfalls. Someone has to man the gate and they can not even see the park. We have to walk through a rec center with our boards. Sometimes we walk through a basketball game (league style), sometimes its a fake wrestling "tournament" or sometimes it is one of those demented tiny beauty contest (awful). Then if someone doesn't show up for work at the rec center, the park is closed. If someone pisses the director off (like tagging the security camera with a paintball), the park may be closed for a whole weekend. There is still grafitti (the gate did not stop it)." For the first two weeks of every year, they enforce a helmet law. At least you have to walk in with one (I am for helmet wearing, should wear one more myself). The worst aspect is closed at night and all winter. No gates, more skates!

Cone scouting..
On 5/27/2005 Lenny- DHB wrote in from United States  (68.253.nnn.nnn)

Dave G, my schedule JUST cleared up a lot (at least untl August) give a call or drop an email is you need "help" scouting the new cone-running spots. How cool is that to have a trooper give you a spot-check?!?!?!

John D, We're having a debate now about the need (or lack there of) of having a gate for our local park (fundrasing efforts are taking place now). Granted the risk of vandalism, etc. would be lessened with a gate, but at the same time, I full-on agree with what you're saying and don't see much graffitti and/or vandalism at the many parks I visit that are unfettered.

Gates,padlocks,fences,pad nannies not necessary
On 5/27/2005 John Dillon, Team Fun, wrote in from United States  (151.200.nnn.nnn)

You don't see these things at tennis cts or athletic fields....just because it looks like rain or there are clouds in the sky above doesn't mean it's going to rain......oftentimes when I lived on the east side in downtown Baltimore, I came in to work on a monday and while chit chatting w/my co-workers I discovered that often activities were rained out at some places whilst just nearby and city central there was no rain or just a tad bit that evaporated due to the heat-island effect....that's probably what happened on wednesday but if there was no gate, no lock, no nanny, etc....it wouldn't matter if it were raining or not, the skate park would always be open....that's the way it should be...SOB (Skatepark of Baltimore)is a new effort by myself and numerous other skateboarders who seek to get a big 24/7 concrete skate park built, preferably in Baltimore City or close by a la Louisville but w/less of a crash up derby factor...we will insist on lights too so skaters who work varied shifts will have an opportunity to perform their artand those from out of town will be able to stop in during a non-rush-hour traffic session. Right now the skate park is only open when the traffic nearby is at its worse. Fundraising has already begun, after 3 gigs we have over $1900.....T-shirts coming out soon, some of you have already contributed at TG5 and elsewhere for Coins For Concrete. I personally thank-you! Just remember: Let there B-More Concrete! Oh yea, and to keep this LB-related, it will be a longboard-friendly skate park!!!

And uninterrupted by the "authorities" Pretty cool, I thought..Now just to get the time to check'em out!

I'll give a shout this weekend. The Mrs. and I are heading to see the in-laws and some friends. Hopefully I'll get a chance to hit a park or at least a hill.

At last year's Gathering, one of our friends came with Jenny and me to check it all out. At the end of the day, he was blown away that, when we were finished, the entire locale was clean and thewre was no evidence that anyone was there except the chalk circles within a very few minutes. He mentioned it to me and I explained that the vast majority of the time, what we do is illegal. When an officer tells us to pack up and leave, we're now given much of a time-frame to play with. We have to be gone!

Night Patrol Turned Night Slalom Session!
On 5/26/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

Night Patrol tonight turned into a big slalom session at the mall parking lot starting about 10:30 pm. DHolt, Jaybird, Mac T, Rookie, SST, were all tearing it up! We set two courses up- a tight twisty hybrid and a big wide open GS. Everyone was ripping. SST and Mac T had their Billy Sticks out and were hauling ass through the cones and Rookie rolled the Orange Julius around and even jumped on both of my slalom boards and I think Jaybirds PPS. We were all jamming and having a good time until some citizen sent up the Bat signal and we got a visit by one of our local police officers (a different one from last night). Unfortunately, this visit didn't end with the same result. We were given the "this parking lot is posted. No after hours use...blah blah blah." The officer was apologetic but he was just following orders. This particular mall has been the site for previous multiple issues with teenager "congregating" so therefore, we got the "I know you guys are alright but if we let you do this then the kids will say why did you let them and not us" speech. He let us all get a few final runs in before we picked up our cones and headed in around 12:30 am. Well, it was fun while it lasted. Time for the DHB to go out and scout next night spot. Everyone on the crew at the site tonight was cool and Jaybird did a great job as spokesman to the officer. Thanks Jaybird for handling things so well. It is important we build on our relationships with the local authoritied and not creat an antagonistic or adversarial one. Jaybird did an excellent job. Thanks for coming out bros! Have a great Memorial Day Weekend. I am going to take several days off from skateboard stuff and will not be looking at our site or posting on the forums. If you need to get in touch with me either give me a shout on the mobile or at the house over the weekend! Later Maters!

I'm super-stoked. Tomorrow at 1:00, I'm off until 8/22. I'm not sure if all my road-trip plans will pan out, but I'm stoked to get a lot of on-board time!

Hey, I know you are talking about going to VT/NH (I get them two confused) but if you change your mind the offer still stands for a place to crash and an opportunity to skate with Marty, Ga. Tom, Ron Olson, Tucker (sorry, but you have too....just joking Tucker), myself, and hopefully others at the Hobby Park Hill.

Talk to you soon! Thanks for bringing the 50 gallon drum of jet fuel to the this bonfire of Stoke we have burning on the East Coast!

On 5/26/2005 John Dillon, Team Fun wrote in from United States  (151.200.nnn.nnn)

This is Major Tom speaking................I drove through the rain home from DC to Baltimore only to find the roads all dry the closer I got to Baltimore yesterday afternoon. As I made my final turn through the neighborhood where Lansdowne is located, I found a cop behind me with his lights flashing. I pulled over thinking I hadn't done anything wrong, and he wizzed by me, pulling over a convertible sports car that had particleboard covering the rear window. As I passed them both(they were blocking the roadway now) and turned up the drive to the Lansdowne Skate Park, I am dismayed when I see the gate is closed and locked! I back up on the dry pavement, careful not to interfere w/the traffic stop and the arrest of the 2 dirtbags(car theft?) and proceed to skate the Pigtown Living Abortion Skate Park on the west side of Baltimore...riding, of course, my Gashead I, BDS LB. Keeping longboarding alive in 05! Wassup NCLB/DHB?
