Banning skate boarding is the most retarded thing you can do unless the cops get board and wanna chase down druggies that turned into meth and potheads because of the drug(skating) that they took away from skaters... i skate and im against this whole things because it is total bull s#@!.

Banning possesion of skateboards is dumb, for lack of a better word. While they're banning skateboards, why don't they ban guns, too? The story of the Virginia Tech massacre, a man shot 31 people with a gun, of which he bought from a pawn shop. Guns are highly dangerous, as opposed to a bruised ankle. I highly doubt that runaway skateboard can break someone's ankle. Sure it'd hurt, but it will heal. When you get shot in the heart, the head, or anywhere, it's going to hurt, and you could possibly die. Saying that someone can't possess a skateboard is like telling people they can't swim at public swimming pools. It's dangerous, you could drown. And for the "damaging property" bulls#@!, who cares if your curbside has a few scrapes, or you have skidmarks on your sidewalk? People are so intolerable towards skateboarders. Skateboarding isn't a crime, it's a culture.

I had the city fax me the law.
In summary, it says: Illegal to ride (SKATEBOARDS, ROLLER BLADES, ROLLER SKATES) on the sidewalks of Main street in the "downtown" area. (Bounded by Sullivan Street and Olcott Lane). Penalty not to exceed 30 days impounding of equipment and not to exceed $100 fine.
My advice (I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice): Ride on the street rather than the sidewalk, or avoid this area.
My interpretation of the law is that it only applies to the sidewalks. That differs from what the police told you (or what you thought they said). You should study the exact wording of the law and pay attention to how it is structured (words like AND OR and whether there are seperators like commas , or semi-colons ; ) These can change the meaning of poorly-written laws.
(I sent the fax of the law to you)
-- Good luck
PS: In my experience this is the most common law against skateboarding -- To restrict or prohibit skateboarding in the core downtown area of a town where there are lots of shoppers and pedestrians. I think it actually makes sense to do this. The law does not prohibit you from riding on the street, so if it is safe and enjoyable to do that, I recommend avoiding the sidewalk and using the street.

Skate Laws - BOGUS

Last night a few friends and I were longboarding when a cop came up to us and took our boards and then proceeded to explain to us that it was illegal to skate on sidewalks and on the roads, and gave us places that we could skate (the school parking lot, after hours). Now, I fully believe that whom ever thought of this brilliant idea to ban skating in these two areas is an idiot for three reasons. 1) There are many skaters/longboarders in my area, and most of which are young teenagers/kids who do not have their license and this is their only means of transportation. 2) Those same kids use this 'sport/activity' to keep themselves away from trouble (we have a pretty s#@! ass drug problem [maryj excluded from this]). 3) Our world isn't getting any cleaner, longboarding/skateboarding is environmentally SAFE.
I'm trying to get a thing going with all of the skateboarders/people who support the skateboarders in my town so that we can somewhat ALTER this law of not being allowed to skate on sidewalks and roads. WHERE can i find MORE INFORMATION about these skateboarding laws and what I can do about it? I'd also like to know if anyone else had encountered the same problem and what they did to fix it.
coming from a little beach town and being allowed to skate everywhere, to some s#@! ass town where things like this are basically prohibited irks me to the fullest extent.
help mehh. :] xO use my e-mail to respond i probably won't be able to find this page again. I found it in google while looking for my local skate laws, hehehe.
oh, and we did get our boards back.

they should just let us skate where we want whats the problem if we fall and get hurt it's our fault were not going to sue the property if your a skater you know the risks so every body suing the property quit, cuz its ruining it for all of us i respect the spot im not going to mess it up cuz its most likely that im going to come back and skate it again so im going to leave the property alone cuz who wants to skate a spot that looks bad cuz you tore it up (besides skating it all sick like)

Dillon,
Can you tell us what city, and what law the ticket was for? Some of us have experience in sucessfully getting laws changed, or finding the right way to work around them.
A little more info, and you might get some help.

so yeah, i think cops do have it out for skaters, but at the same time, they have o do their job and serve the city, when someone complains they have to do something about it, im not taking their side but think about it, ther'ye COPS, but yeah, i f#@!ing hate cops, i usually skate in beech grove cuz that where i live and cops here are ridiculous, i mean there is a couple of cool cops, they let us skate wherever. but me and my homie's we alwasy just either run when they pull up to us, or when their on the road driving we just sit down till they pass us, there are actually some really good spot here, we have a place called ledges and wedges and its like a badass spot, but yeah its a small place where cops bust skaters! ( GAY ) but beech grove is like 75 percent skaters , no joke, they have mostly skaters and here's a heads-ip, if your ever thinkin about taking a long roadtrip tp go to beech grove skatepark, DONT DO IT ITS A WASTE. there is 4 things to skate and thats our park, a qp a box and a pyramid with a hubba, and a small ass roll in and thats it, there is a 12 set by the library tho, with handrails, but yeah, me and my homies chill out, and go skate, we get like 15 ppl to skate all with us and cops pull us over and say we have a gang, were all usually wearing tight pants and punk rock shirts or band shirts or skate shirts, i hate cops the yare always being (((HATERS!))) late!

banning skateboarding is prolly the dumbest thing tht they can do cuz then kids are gonna go out a break stuff and cause more trouble then wat we were apparentlly doing in the first place the old ppl who call the police shood just sit by and watch us skate cops shood be out protecting the city instead of stopping kids from doing something worth time lik they dont ban bmx or rollerblading schools will hav football and basketball but no skateboarding bcuz the nations school system sucks they act lik we are doing something wrong they dont understand tht skating is a lifestyle cuz they're too blind to see the benefits places are worried tht we'll break something and sue them well thts our own fault for not landing the trick it shood stay legal and if its illegal then they shood make it legal otherwise the crime situation will rise due to kids not having things to do but the break things outta the anger from this they treat it lik skateboarding is a crime all i got to say is if they do make illegal in my town to skate then well ill be in juvie and jail till the day i die
