I've got a great story to share about Mr. Hackett. This year at Morro Bay, after the last slalom races were over, a few of the racers ended up back at Los Osos skatepark for a quick session before the awards ceremony. Hackett, as usual, had his Osiris backpack/boombox with him and was playing--what was it?--Nugent or Aerosmith, maybe? Anyway, some sort of guitar-heavy rock & roll. The CD ran out, so he went to change it. I was standing 50 feet away, looking in the opposite direction, waiting to drop in somewhere. Sort of peripherally I heard a new CD kick in--Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper." Then I hear a deep voice yell in my direction: "Hey, Harms! More cowbell!!!" I turn around and there's Hackett with a big grin on his face, banging on an imaginary cowbell with an imaginary drumstick.
If you've seen the Saturday Night Live sketch with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken, you'll understand the reference. Anyway, I just thought it was cool that here's this guy who's been skating forever, and racing every day during the previous week, and he's still bent on having a good time and including a "Midwewst wannabe" (a phrase I stole from some angry dude in the LODT forum) in a shared joke-n-stoke. If only for a moment, I felt like I was one of the cool guys.
Happy Birthday, Hack-man! Long may you rip!

Yeah happy B'day Dave. At 45 you ARE an inspiration and a real character. It was great to race against you at Morro. It was a highlight for me even though I would have liked to be more competitive. Next time...

Hackett, while you are marking your calendars and considering a trip to Lansdown also make a note of the 2006 Dixie Cup, Nov. 3-5, 2006. Hobby Park Soap Box Derby Hill in Winston-Slalom and Court Street in Sk8esville are calling your name!

CABBAGE, YOUR DAYS AS "LORD OF LANSDOWN" ARE NUMBERED IF OLSON AND I DECIDE TO VENTURE OUT THERE AND RACE IT NEXT YEAR.
TOO BAD YOU HAVE HAD NO COMPETITION TO CHALLENGE YOUR WEIGHT TO INCLINE RATIO. OLSON WEIGHS MORE THAN YOU AND WILL TAKE YOU DOWN IF HE EVER RACES LANSDOWN.
I, OF COURSE, WILL HAVE TO RELY ON MY SUPREME LINE, INCREDIBLE PHYSICAL CONDITIONING, STONE COLD MENTAL FOCUS, AND SUPERB EQUIPMENT SELECTION AND TUNAGE.
IN OTHER WORDS - IT'S WILL BE ON - IF WE ARE NOT SURFING 10-12 FOOT METAWAI BARRELS WITH BRAD BOWMAN AND STACY PERALTA AT THE TIME OF THE NEXT EVENT.
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE WHERE YOU STAND IN THE WORLD OF BANK SLALOM GREATNESS, COME OUT AND RACE THE BEAR OR INDIAN SCHOOL. THAT IS WHAT SEPARATES THE MEN FROM THE BOYS.
