Old man winter did us in. Made a 8 1/2 day trip turn into a 4 day trip and since My wonderful mother paid for the 3 tix so she could see her grand kids I did not feel right taking a day away from her. My mom is a wonderful lady so I cherish the time I get with her, which is not much these days. Next trip out to So Cal we will hit that hill
Family first is how we roll :)
Thanks for tho offer to hit it

Glad you like the board Sam! Skate smart and safe and you can be riding that board when you are my age!!!
No, John and I never bombed Gate hill. We spent most of our time on West Point hills and running from the MP's in their jeeps. We took a ride down a hill in the Bear Mtn. state park once. I think a State Trooper chased us out during our first run. He chased, we ditched him and promtly left the area. The hill we bombed had a few turns and led down to a little traffic circle. It's probably not a good place to ride today...we bombed it 26 or so years ago!!

The last 12 months have been great at GMR. The "GMR boys" like Roland, the Meehan Bros, DT, Ed and John have been busy showing the hill off to a bunch of riders from out of town and riding it nearly every week. DT's outlaw race put the finishing touch on one of the best years GMR has seen in a long time.
Ian Comishin was out for a visit and a few runs down GMR. The Vancouver/BC crew that came down for a Bonelli race got some good time up at GMR. Plenty of young new faces from the SoCal area got their first taste of GMR this past year. Eric Tokle got some good runs and the guided tour(thanks to Roland and the boys for making it happen).
Mac and Max...the hill is waiting for you.

I was just in the speedboarding forum and noticed that the "winter withdrawls" are starting to affect a few of the riders. Looks like Andreas has placed all the blame on the "old farts" from "North America" for all things wrong with speedboarding. I'm not sure what we have screwed up this time, but the time is right for the bitching to begin.
Meanwhile in sunny SoCal, it looks like I've been missing out on some actual speedboarding fun. The GMR outlaw and Barret outlaw went off over the past few weeks. I wish I could have made them both...Oh well.
Congrats to John on the GMR win and Andrew Sawyer for the Barret win. So it's the Badlands next?

Deck Design

So, what design is best for which kind of hill? Drop deck, drop through, or top mount? I just rode my first drop deck, Landy EVO, and really liked it. But it would seam, that you would lose a bit of leverage when compared to the other two designs. I also just ran across a photo of Chaput on a top mount, and in the caption he mentioned why he chose that design for that course. But can't remember as to why, or where I saw it. GRRRR! As I'm buying a speedboard for myself for Xmas, any design wisdom and experience that you care to share would be much appriciated.

I drive east from AZ tues. My friends place is in Carlsbad but I don't mind making the trek to GMR from there. I plan to drive north sat for the CCMF pool sesh contest at Los Osos skate park sat pm and a slalom race at the famous Cambria hill on the year's eve. So give me a ring and lets make something of a plan between those days. It would be great to have one or both the Bros out there too! I am so fricking excited to possibly finaly run that hill!!!!!!!!!!!! Rain may come through tues, could that screw with us? Run-off streams across the road are my main concern. We'll see, probably not. I'm stoked!!!!

I am on a skate road trip from Nor Cal. I have a few days the middle of the week (about the 27th-29th) for so cal skating and GMR is very high on my list. I have seen the hill and I am ready for it.
Whats a good way to get to the top? I know its a looooong hike, is there other reasonable options, especially that I am alone. Am I nuts to try ridding it alone? I would prefer not to, so it would be great to hook up with an experienced local.
I cant easily acess my email while traveling so please phone me if you would like to help and/or skate. I also ride parks and slalom too but GMR is my focus for help here.
I would be super stoked for any guidence!
Thanks gang, Eric (707) 292-5962 please be patient as there is a good chance I may miss a call but I should get the message quickly.

Sunday December 31, 2006. 8:00 AM $30 entry fee.
This includes at least one drive to the top. More rides available depending on number of riders and circumstances. Keep in mind it is an outlaw race. Road is still closed and is likely to reopen soon, possibly on the 2nd. This may be our last chance for a closed outlaw, geev'um!
Entry fee is split 2 ways. The driver will receive $5-10 of each entry fee, with the remaining $20-25 going to the top 4 finishers.
Send an email to: dakine_outlaw@hotmail.com to rsvp. Let me know what format you would like to run. This will give me an idea of how many riders we have.
We will likely break the hill into several segments, in which the top finishers of the heats advance. There will be several heats. Initial segments will be announced on Dec. 29th based off rsvps. Adjustments will be made if necessary come race day. 4-6 man heats, again based on votes so rsvp. shoots.
Slide Gloves & Helmet required. SNELL ONLY, NO DOT or AERO !!!
just kidding, any helmet will do open or closed,
its da kine gentlemen's outlaw stylee. clean racing is expected, any mooche bumping, whining, bitching, sniveling, or cheating will receive beat downs and dirty lickings. yoowwwww!!!!

I can't thank you gentlemen enough for my GMR pilgrimage at the beginning of the month. I pulled a no-brainer and sat at the airport confused as to how I confused 20:30 for 16:30, maybe I should have done a stint in the army to have that 24hr clock instinct.
Malyka is stoked to see Sarah Maude soon, so come back to Montreal when you can.
Thanks for the runs John, Dave, Judith and the entire GMR crew. 16 of us dropped in that day... epic.

Dude, Moreno valley is not far from where we will be! we are in Anehiem hills, the 91 & 241. Without traffic it should be about 1/2 tops? It would be great to borrow a set up we can only bring so much on the plane. What/where is GMR? I will see if Jason Mitchell would like to join us, I am sure you have met him but if not he and his wife are SUPER great people. Funny how many ex-california folk are in the Denver area. I tried to find on google earth but not sure which direction to look from the center of town???? that sunday the 24th would be awesome!

Mac, the dump will be closed on the 24th and 25th for your riding pleasure. It's quite a drive from the beach towns, but one of the best "fast" hills in SoCal. The dump hill is near Moreno Valley if you want to check a map. I live pretty close to the dump hill and would be stoked to meet you guys there and give you some pointers. I've got some spare DH boards and leathers if you need to pack light. If GMR is still closed to traffic, you guys might consider riding there instead...or skate both if you can! Who has the news on GMR? Did they open it yet? Yep, we like beer!

We would be in the novice class but would love to hit at least part of that hill and if any of you cats want to cosch a us a bit I will buy the beer for the "post sesh sip".

I forgot about the wheel question. I ran everthing from the new 85 Vents to 70mm ZigZags that day. I was running Pink Gummies for the video run. Wheels don't seem to make much difference at the dump road. Over 50mph it's all about aerodynamics!

Thanks for putting that up John. That was a fun day for sure!
Yea Jamie, that's a pretty fast run. It's 50 to 60mph for a good portion of the hill. The video shows that the draft really starts to work well above 50mph!
Yes, we have talked about a DH school. It could happen one day. Your best bet is to come to SoCal on your next vacation and just come ride with us. Leave a Sunday open if you want some drafting lessons at the dump road!
