Skogging is more than just SWITCH push
On 7/24/2008 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (66.91.nnn.nnn)

Skogging is an evolution of moves based on switch push and stance mixed with pumps, gliding carves(one and two foot) as one traverses long distances. It is great on flats and the intention to master it is to help carve the future for skateboards as transportation. The next time a cop pulls me over for skateboarding, I will inform him the device is not a skateboard but a PTV. A Portable Transportation Vehicle. With the stupidity of cars strangling both the economy and the ecology, a major push for people to get off their asses and walk, bike or use some mode of self generated mobility is the future for the kids. The old folks have been brought up on KFC, fast foods and couch potato lifestyles. This has got to change.

Skogging is a methodology of using the skateboard for transportation and fitness. After skating for more than 40 years, my talents lean towards the ease of something that moves me into a flowing meditation of moves from self generated speeds. I'm finding an inner peace when I flatline my pulse while skogging long distances. Long distance runners know about those endorfins kicking in and that unmatched overwhelmeing euphoric feeling turning to bliss and gently edging one into a calm, beyond deep sleep. And this is why the high on my skateboard keeps me coming back for more.

Skogging Strengthened My Knees and Maintains
On 7/18/2008 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (66.91.nnn.nnn)

i hit pavement damn good at the morrow bay race. if i had to compare it to slamming in a bowl, it was really nothing :) BUT. I tweeked my knee reaching out for a cone I was out of position to take instead of skating away from it or hitting. bad decision :)

its been stiff and i got two professional opinions pointing out the healing process. pretty simple, rest, movement and nutrients. stretched ligs.

i've been out skogging twice since the crash and my samoan genetics with skogging seem to be helping out . daily workouts are important and skogging
has kept me on top of my board.

i went into the morrow race with very little practice. but since i skog daily, me legs were ready to go. stamina on the other hand is tricky. for these events i was with my family and it was a little camp out vacation for them. for me
since i work mad IT hours, it was nice to switch gears.

At the very least... i got great practice... meeting the current crazed down-hillers! the socialization was sweeet. one of these times, i'll get serious and really race? lynn k. is a good inspiration. her practice habits are keen. i should be ready for the pumphouse tights coming up. the G/S there is a scream! especially from the very top. the walk back up the hill is like a 10 mile hike equivalent when you walk back up fast. on the side of the freeway walking up with the trees, bushes and weeds can be meditative. a good nature walk. i bet colorado and michigan have some great stuff.

meeting the current downhill maddogs is still ringing in me head. thanks dudes!

ya'll are making me smile more!

Chris, sorry to hear of your run-in with the cops. Its a strange and unjust world where things like this can happen. Keep your head straight, keep skating and try to rise above.

again. not all cops suck
On 6/25/2008 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (66.91.nnn.nnn)

Just like not all skaters suck :)

As the weeks go on i thought my hate for the situation would subside. but it aint. might be because I don't want these freaks to continue being asswipes. And that they go on thinking what they did was proper because after all is said and done... they WERE WRONG! Unnecessary force was used when it did not have to be. I could've run and made them look stupid. instead, i stayed and now they look stupider! seriously, these dudes were in my hood with neighboring businesses ready to harbor me.

Being jerks is part of being a san diego cop. Perhaps less would die if they used their heads instead of using their egos.

I'd tell you what I think of the whole situation, but the webmaster would delete the post & ban me for life.

Let's just say I'm pissed about the battle tactics of San Diego's "finest."
Fight this all the way Yandall. Make them look like the a$$es they are.

Did anyone catch it on video?

Your Infraction?
On 6/23/2008 S.Smith wrote in from United States  (67.182.nnn.nnn)

Sorry to hear about your run in w/ the Man or should I say pee-ons. The California Stand-up Series Race #6 was held this past Saturday on the outskirts of King City,CA. It was going to be on HWY 198, but changed to a different loaction due to the MAN! Georges Siddiq ran the whole 4.1 miles of it,7% butter smooth two lane highway and got pulled over by the CHP with lights on. I bombed the last mile or so only to come upon Georges and the MAN waiting for anybody else at the bottom. The dude just smiled, gave a little lecture about us being hit by a semi and gave us a "warning" and told to go somewhere else a little safe. And we went on our ways. Wierd how the Pee-ons acted totally nuts for something so minor when we were blantently breaking the law. Man I wonder what SDPD would do to a downhiller, pull out the sevice issue revolver and claim he was "Suicide by Cop" or better yet "engaging in terrorist activities" since we all give out "terrorist fist jabs" before every run,HEHE. Once again, sorry for the lame arse treatment that was brought upon you for something we all love doing.

what can be said, that hasn't been said a million times. A bit of misalignment between your attitude and officer attitude,i've done it myself, never ending up in cuffs ,but close. yes sir yes sir ,sorry, let me correct myself immediately ,it won't happen again. Skateboarding has an interesting dimensionas a vehicle, it can be a toy that should be restricted to the sidewalk, but then there's the way a lot of us use skateboards, where it's more like a bicycle.By the way a three year old on a 10 inch wheeled toy bike with training wheels belongs on the sidewalk and a 53 year old with 3 inch wheels on his skateboard pushing with both feet is more like a jogger and really can't /shouldn't be lumped in with the three year old. As far as the swervy dancey stuff,it doesn't sound as if you were coming out of a piroette when you barely managed to avoid some jaywalkers, where your control could have been a judgement call.

Busted on the Skog
On 6/23/2008 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (66.91.nnn.nnn)

Getting a ticket is one thing but police domination for a small piece of street is ridiculous. Judgement calls from little cops are usually in error when dealing with a formidable shape. I am healthy and strong. I had no priors and this cop was trying to flex his itty bitty muscles.

Officer McNally will someday see the error of his ways. i did not get the other cops names because they jumped me. i've seen stupid s#@! with cops on tv and now I got to witness first hand, stupid cops in action. 4 cops required to subdue someone who wasnt fighting back? someone who was writhing in pain with handcuffs put on wrong and overzealous cops trying to make it appear that I was obstructing justice?

time for zero tolerance for police brutality! not all cops are bad but these represented the very worst kind.

ok. Jack rules! Look forward to skating more and with you.. CLIFF! ITZ A TREAT!

but really that course probably would've looked better with some more sleep...

at the same time, if I knew it was a straight down course, I would've been properly prepared to do better but heck, Jack wasn't the only one kickin' my butt! half of the open class was too :) oh sooooo olddddddddddd

one of these dayz i'll get more excited to kick it down the hill :)

conventional boards
On 4/25/2008 herbn wrote in from United States  (67.83.nnn.nnn)

i went for a skate on my bulldog longboard for the first time in a longtime. It has some width appropriate webb trucks and 61 mm 78a ricta cloud wheels(not a terrible wheel)with 1/4 risers it felt very clumsy in the mongo push, i left favorite skog board at my shop the next day just to have a usable errand board. I can't imagine trying to cover a good distance on a flat board with randals or something like on it, a dipped board would be cramped unless it was really long, then it wouldn't swerve quick enough. I'm trying to imagine what would work best, perhaps a flush mounted dropthrough indy or tracker, gotta be a full cutaway deck.

Chris,

Don't sell Jack short. He put a whoopin on me at another of Johnny's events. So did the winner of the over 50 race, Chris Miller. He was very fast. Hell, I'm now looking forward to races for those over 60. If I keep rasing the age level, I can hide from these guys. :)

Looking to hang with you sometime in the future,

Dude, looks like if you were here, your gumballs would've ruled. it was pretty much a straight course with 1 or 2 big swing gates. not a day for an axe :) but, my axe was kickin' for downhill fun.

Between Jack Smith and YOU, I would've put my cash on the infinite omnipresent coleman.

Cheers Mate! Looks like there were some typos in the racing results but we won't go there ...

Chris,

Was thinking about you and Jamie at Miller's race. I was racing Giant Slalom the same day here in the South of Brazil. I ended up 9th out of about 24. The course was fast and smooth. I had a great time but still missed the chance to skate with you old fellows. By the way, you have more white hair than I do. How old are you? :)
