Mike,...about decks..... I've got a few good all around cruiser decks that I like personally. I have a Bahne rocker with Indy's and 3dm Avalons that is compact and a whole lot of fun. I just got an Arbor Hybrid,..but have yet to set it up. Arbor boards are really well made almost so nice you don't want to scratch it. I bought my girlfriend a Surf One longboard that rides like a limosine. Be sure to check those out. Also the Landyachtz "Ripper" looks like a nice versatile size for all around riding. Never ridden one though.
SK8 and appreciate!

Guys, I am an old skater. I want to buy a longboard setup for cruising and stuff. The rub is that I am quite large (6'4 and 250 lbs). I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about decent decks with a bit of flex that would hold up to my size. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

G7enn: drop me an email about those old drops you did! Did you do the drop-thru on the angled side, or just cutaways to clear the wheels on that end, and then dropped the new rear truck (original nose of deck) so that it would ride level? I may also have a plank or two that would really fit what you're trying to do, and I'll be taking pix this weekend of some of my stuff (I'm really behind on this!). Much the same as you, I dare not even step on the one I already have built; the cutaways didn't help the stregth of the deck either. I do find (as a side note) that a more stable-pivot truck (like a Dart/RTS/Invader/whatever), even mounted on the 'kicks' tends to be ALOT less squirrely and still more turny.
Peters: Do NOT mount OG's on anything other than a flat surface! They're WAY turny enough without adding any wedge, either from a riser or an angled deck surface like a kicknose or kicktail. The Carvetrucks are different and are designed to be run at an angle.

I have a board I made from a very beat up old Sims Superply 9" (an inch off the nose and tail and a nasty paint job by me at 15, but I still wonder if it would have been worth more as it was...) I converted it to a mini dropthrough board and added cutouts. The kicktail is now the 'wedged' nose. It has old Indy 151s and Old 70mm Kryps (the first ones with cores from around '79) and it is very fast, my younger son (now 8) loved it as his first board and still rides it as a speed board (those kryptonics just don't age), the top of the deck is only a couple of inches off the ground making it very easy for small kids to learn to push on, it's also very stable as depite being only 28" long it has a 20"+ wheelbase. I've never riden it myself though as there just isn't much wood left at the ends, they are only about 4" wide with an inch or so dropthrough hole for the trucks.
Before this I made another dropthough board out of an old Variflex Eric Grisham. This was truly beyond restoration, the bottom two plys just peeled off from damp at some point in the past. I made a dropthrough deck and left the kicktail, cutting just holes for the wheels (56mm rollerskate red kryptos) and fitted an old Indy 131 on the back with a 151 on the front and more normal cutaways. I also cut the centres out of a pair of old Tracker 1/2" risers, allowing me to use them as lowering pads. The baseplates effectively rising 1/2" above the deck. My other son (then 7, now 10) used to love this board, at five plys it flexed, even under his weight, it had super soft bushings (Randal yellows) and at maximum turn the hangers would hit the deck and the deck be a 1/2" off the ground. This board used to really freak people out at skateparks but was of course useless for anyone over his 55 pounds or so.
I'd love to build a bigger, stronger version of this board (would I ever be extravagant enough to chop up a 12" Skaterbuilt?) for myself sometime...

steve + psr, for a long time i've thought about doing that with a little popsicle stick board, Original trucks and some sticky fat wheels... seems like it would make a 'mini-CarveBoard' given that the Originals are spring-driven, and part of CarveBoards uniqueness is that their trucks are mounted AT that angle (rather than trying to flatten the angle out by stacking wedges) - have you tried anything like that? in theory seems like it might ride just like a CarveStik...

Fokke, I still have one of those hanging in my garage.
When the kids on my street come by, this is one of the boards they LOVE to ride; turns on a dime and is stable as hell.
As PSR did, it's easy to mount trucks on one of these...but it's probably better with a VERY stiff deck (8 plys min) and without too much kick/nose angle.
I went the extra mile and cut-away the deck so I wouldn't need any spacers with the SG Invader 800 trucks and 62mm Hyper/Krypto wheel combination. It's too flexy for my 195#, but I didn't use the best of decks for this little project, either.
email me for pix or whatever.

Fokke, I was doing that back in '92 with G+S's Heintzmann model board. That had a steep enough nose that I had to stack two wedges (Rad Pads at that) to kinda level the trucks out. The item I cut+pasted is from the Photo Gallery here. It's not a new concept. However only LatterDaySkates has to my knowledge actually built these for public consumption. has any body here ever coverted a regular skate board into a long board? I was thinking that although it may be short it would have low cg if the trucks were mounted on the tail and front lip.
(by regular board i mean like trick board what tony hawk uses) that kind

I've had the pleasure of riding a few of these at the Gathering races. They are big, but super well made, with shapes that work pretty well. My favorite set-up was with Carver trucks and big sticky ABEC 11 wheels. A full 6 ft. long, yet I was able to get it through most of the G.S. course (kept getting the wheels past the cones, but the middle of the board would nudge cones over). For just stylin' and haulin', these are great boards. Up where I live, in Vermont, I'd likely die on some of the hills I ride, simply because I'd need to turn more sharply or stop. Our hills here have a habit of ending abruptly at intersections, bridges, Railroad Crossings or suddenly be dirt instead of paving. If I lived where the hills were mellower, then I'd own one.

I'm slowly removing the stiff decks from my quiver, except for the speedboards of course, and replacing them with decks with some life to them. To that end I am looking for a longboard that has loads of flex for a light rider (read: 125 lbs of pure muscle...ha, ha, ha....). Would be nice if it was in the 43 - 45 inch range. Any suggestions?
