Deathbox:Hackett Purple Heart as a slider

I've been using Hackett's Purple Heart from Deathbox for bowls and sliding lately. I have it set up with Seismic 180's (quickturns, yellow front red rear) and 64mm Powell Bowl Bombers (95).
I'm getting some wheelbite so I think I need to switch to 62mm wheels or slide 2mm or so of 'thane off.
This deck/truck/wheel combo makes for a great sliding board. Its giving me better control and holds my feet better than the Rayne Pug I've been riding. I feel like my sliding is about to improve a lot with this setup...its definately easier to pendulum than my longer boards.
So I got me a cool dual purpose board...whenever the 'Chilli' bowl at Crocker Amazon park is full I just go up to some nearby steep hills behind the Cow Palace and have a nice slide session. Its a win win.
I suck at bowl riding so I'm not gonna review the board from that perspective.

G&S Response/Attila

Duke, these boards designed by Attila are great little things, but ... have you ridden one yet? To many people, the original Response feels a little cramped -- there doesn't seem to be enough foot room to find a comfortable stance. The Response Pro, a bit wider, was designed to provide extra space. But still, these are kind of specialized decks, mainly for tight slalom. Is that what you're planning to do?

Julien -- None of the vendor links on the Motion site seem to go anywhere really useful, so I wrote to the company to ask whether they sell boards directly. A gentleman named Dom wrote back:
"No trouble for an order straight from us. We got the Paypal system; so you can pay with any standard credit card... Prices are in CANADIAN DOLLARS, so divide by 1.2 for USD pricelist."
Here's the list:
Gravy $60 Nicotino $105 Hybrid 36 $125 Spirit 43 $135 Bigfish $140 TS-30 $95
Carbon series: Classique 42 $170 Comet 49 $175 Highlander $175 DH Speed $185
I would think, too, Purple Skunk would be happy to order any of these, since they already stock a few models. Their prices seem pretty reasonable.

I've also got to chime in about the BigFish: it's a bitchen deck. It's a do-it-all pintail. A little wider than many others, with concave, a little camber, nice flex and low weight.

I would say the same thig as Bean-a-reano for the nosewalker. My setup is exactly the same, but with Avilas 78a. I ride it with indy 215 and angle risers, wich I think make all the difference on that board... And I love it. The only thing to care with the Avilas is the wheelbite... I will try it with NoSkoolz...
Hope it helps...

Dude, Motions are the shiite. I would go as far as to call them a canadian comet. Very similar type constructions on a lot of their decks but a more longboard/carve oriented line than the Comet guys. I have only had the pleasure of riding the Big Fish but damn these boards are nice, this board seems like it could do everything, fricking rocked with R2s and some big ole avilas. Really nice flex too and I think they usually drill multiple sets of holes in the back so you can adjust wheelbase and flex to suit your weight better. Their speedboard is in my opinion one of the most stylish I've ever seen too, they have a new graphic out now with some hara-kiri style samurai imagery goin on that I saw at the skunk and was really diggin, I think it was a demo board for their Speedboard racer Eli Smouse. Anyone know any other places to get the motions (online or off? julien

I’m looking for a good all around board. I mainly carve and cruise but I’m starting to get into some slides. I’ve been riding the sector nine super cruiser for a while and really liked it. For my new board I was stuck between the sector nine super cruiser and the cosmic 2, then I saw the sector nine bola. So I was wounding if anyone knew anything good or bad about this board. I’m 150lbs 5’11. I was planning to put seismic trucks 45 degree on front and back with some 70mm Kryptonics Hawaiian K blue. Thanks for the help

Somebody posted this query a while back, but ... has anybody gotten a chance to ride any of the Motion Longboards line? A few models have popped up on vendors' web sites (Purple Skunk and Mile High). Motion would seem to be another little Canadian company with soul, a la Landyachtz. The boards are mostly V-lam with fiberglass and some models have a carbon beam. They look really nice in photos ... but you know how that goes.

hate to say it, but you should hack some wheel cut-outs into the deck, or stack that sucker high. I don;t like the high ride, so I am a cut-out guy. I'd suggest R2 180s with a 77mm striker. Great turning (not as turny as originals or exkates but they still turn well), very stable up to 35-40 mph (can;t say that about orig or exkates). Strikers will be fast, grippy and slide when you want them to. If you want to live without the cut outs, you'll need to go small on the wheels (66mm strikers?) with less risers - but the key to enjoying long wheelbase boards is the smooth drawn out lines - and NO friggin wheel bite. Ever.

van,
What have you tried thus far?
I'd look at the wide eXkate trucks and also the wide Original truck. Wheels: 3dm Avalons in 78a or 80a, or perhaps an ABEC11 Flashback. Too tall a wheel will promote wheel bite, and that ironing board of a deck has no provision for wheel cutouts/wells.

Man skateing in Vegas sucks. I can't get any better 'cause I can't meet skaters my age, there isn't even a skatepark in UNLV for us to meet up! That's one of the many reasons UNLV sucks for skaters besides the fact thats it's full of stuff shirt old people and preppies that hate skaters. Hey if any skaters in UNLV wanna chat and meet up come the fall season email me. There just is so much in skateboarding that just cant be self taught! I really wish someone would help me get a skatepark in UNLV so we wouldn't run into preppies who refuse to get out of the way and glare at us when we have to stop short for there damn asses! S'cuse my french, but what moron stands in front of a skater going 35 mph! Any wayz that's my shpeil, buh bye! *Timber

PAVEL ROADSTER- Very Nice!!!!
SUBSONICSKATEBOARDS.COM- Pauliwog Model(click onto the "future" icon, carbon stringer model)- I'm not the fastest guy out there but last weekend at the Hood River West Coast Championship, I used the deck Scott made for me for both the G/S with a 22"(?) wb and the T/S with a 19" wb. I finished 10th overall in GS(I think ?) and 8th in the A Division in the T/S. I guess I'm no longer a "B" division guy (at least in T/S), but have moved up to being an "A Division bottom-feeder" per Gary Fluitt. This deck did work better in the T/S as a T/S deck but felt pretty good in the G/S as well as a "One Gun"(but, I did change trucks and wheels between races so I guess I cheated on the "one gun" approach). For a stiff concave/no camber, simple wood core laminate with hobby shop carbon stringers and fiberglass top and bottom made in some guys garage(the best part), I felt really comfortable on it both days. Thanks again to Scott Moore at Subsonic Skateboards. -Paul

Has anyone ever heard of a longboard company named eden?I recentley purchased one of there boards just to try out for fun and well there have ben alot of problems with it since i got it.First of all i ordered the board offline, and i picked one out that had some nice graphics but when i got it it was blank, except for there symbol. The information said that the deck weighed about 5 pounds, but when i recieved it and and picked it up out of its box i knew that something wasnt right,i put it on a scale and it was ten pounds,i love to race and well theres no way im gonna win with that much weight.I guess all i want to know is there anyboady else that has one of these boards and if so what do you think of it,and if you do have one is there a website i can go on to and see if there other stuff is the same as what i have. Thanks joe

Hello, I live in Medford Oregon I just bought a new longboard (kinda long) from the Hot Skates in Medford, apparently there is a longboard company from Medford (I previously lacked this knowledge), called surf the streets. I have rode sector 9, gravity, vision, and a surf one. None compare to this board. They way it rides, the graphics, and the overall control this board has. DOES any body know if they have a website or if they really are from Deadford Oregon???? Thanks friends----Ryan

Insect Sidewinder 30"

I love the Insect Sidewinder I got a few weeks ago and it took a little bit of tweaking, but now it does everything I want it to - I can pump it forever, carve down mellow inclines, or run it through cones in a tight slalom. I have it setup with 81a Grippins, 139mm RTS/RTX trucks set at the narrowest wheelbase (19.5", although it also can do 20", 20.5", 21"). My tweaking involved first adding a full 1/2" of riser to the board to compensate for the low profile of the Tracker trucks (otherwise I get wheelbite). Then I added 7* (1/8-5/8") wedges to both trucks (forward/forward for slalom, forward/backward for pumping) to adjust the turning. Finally I replaced the stock bushings with and sanded Radikal bushings (75/75 front, 85/80 back) which really improve the stability and rebound of the trucks.
After all that I tried it out this weekend, I did some mellow TS course runs (6'6" cones and then some offsets) setup by Rick Sayers in Golden Gate Park - my first run I found it a little getting used to (first time ever running cones) but after about an hour I was able to run the first two sections cleaning at a slow pace... I wasn't able to do the 6'3" "stingers" he set up at the end of the course... but no one else (aside from Rick) seemed to be able to do them either so I guess they kind of difficult to do (especially for your first day doing slalom). I had a blast - even when I was bulldozing cones and freaking out the tourists walking by!
After that, I flip the back wedge to turn it into a pumping deck - I now can easily indefinitely pump the board around in my parking lot... which was *exactly* what I was looking for! (I can sort of pumping my 38" Loaded Vanguard, but not quite as well yet). I am very pleased with the board! Some thoughts...
Wheelbite: One thing I noted was there there is a several potential for wheelbite with the Trackers... Eli at PurpleSkunk ended up giving be 1/2" of risers PLUS the 1/8" to 5/8" wedge which according to my calculations is about 3/4" of a riser. This is irrespective of the stock Tracker bushings, or the Radikal bushings.
Bushings: I would love to try Yellow Stim bushings... but they are an endangered species it appears... so the Radikal bushings seem to work really well for me. They are definitely more lively than the stock randals AND the blue Khiros with built-in washer, better feel than the stock Tracker hourglasses (which are a little mushy).
Trucks: I went to PurpleSkunk at SF tried the 105, 140 Seismics and the 106 and 139 Trackers (I might have the sizes offset by a few millimeters, but it was basically small and medium width trucks). I wasn't too key on the super narrow trucks even though they give you quicker turning. I think that the that the Trackers are a better truck for slalom (at least for starting out) - I like their versatility (slalom, pumping, downhill), ease of use (changing bushings vs springs) and economy (prce of trucks and springs). That's not to say that Seimics weren't fun - I really like them as well and they are on my short list of things to buy in the future - but they turn and respond a little... differently and it would take some getting used to in slalom (Ricker Sayers had Bahne Backhill with a 106 Seismics and grey springs on the front and a RTX 105 with stock bushings in the back that I tried out).

I own one she is a bute. I first saw the board at the Gathering 4. Vlad was ripping the Hybrid course on one. When I got home I got a hold of Steve Hopper at Insect. He made one to my specs and sent it out to me. The board handles very nicely on Hybrid courses and for general cruising. I did not place one sticker on that board. It is that nice of a board. Steve at Insect puts his heart and soul into his boards and it shows. Eddy Texas Outlaws.
