and if you have the money upgrade bearings. reds are ideal for beginners but there's much better stuff out there.

Push harder!
Okay then. Bigger wheels (76mm say) will give you instantaneous roll that just never seems to stop.
And push/pump harder.

this thing is sick. it carves so tight its unbelievable. you have to get it with the s6 trucks though or else its got nothing. its not only great for bombing but its also great for ridin round town. this thing will turn around any corner, piece'a'cake.

J Bay vs Loaded

Purple Skunk is a great shop.
Are you sure the Loaded is only $50 more? I see the J Bay as $60 and the Loaded Bamboo Vanguard as $160. $190 sounds about normal for a complete since the Deck is $60 + $40 for the R2-180s + $40 Gumball + $25 for the bearings. If you know how to pump, you can pump Randals... but they aren't the easiest trucks to pump. Seismics or RTX/RTS Trackers are easier to pump. I suggest getting some blue/red khiro insert bushings in your Randals (or Bones Hardcore Mediums).
You should have a lot of fun!

Personally, I never liked Randal 180s for pumping, maybe they are too wide, maybe Randals just aren't too good for pumping (though Randal Baseplates with Splitfire hangers are, maybe 150s would be better?). It's all a trade off, I don't do a lot of the kind of skating where stabilty at speed is an issue (too old and fat to get off and run at 30+ MPH). If you think you are seriously interested in pumping as a way of getting around, maybe you should ask a few questions in the pumping forum.
I've recently set up my 38" pintail with an ancient Indy and a Splitfire and it's turned out to be a great pumper and a pretty nice cruiser (there is a long boring post about it in the pumping forum if you are interested).

I went to Purple Skunk today and demo'd the boards they had. I cut my options down to the Loaded Bamboo Vanguard and the Sector 9 J Bay...both with Randall II 180's and Abec11 Gumballs. I didn't think the Loaded was worth the extra $50 so I went with the Sector 9. They have to order the board so I'll get to pick it up next week, I was just wondering if I got a good deal. That complete setup for $193 after tax.
I'm also wondering if that setup will be alright for pumping. I don't know how to do it now, therefore I couldn't really test that.

i was thinking of getting a Landyatchz wedge flex deck (oe with the upturned nose). anyone own or ridden one got any views? also i heard that u need reverse pin trucks for decks with an upturned nose, is that true? how much would different type trucks affect the ride? any views would be great!

I'm going to purple skunk tomorrow to demo some boards/possibly buy one. I'm just curious to how you think an Arbor Fish would suit my needs? I'm worried because I've read really good reviews about this board, but purple skunk doesn't carry arbor.

There are a lot of factors though. How important is the length of the board?, Sure, Randals might be better on those hills (though I think my snowboard analogy holds true) but if you are going to spend 90% of your time commuting they are pretty terrible for pumping.
Anyway, I have to take back some of what I said about a slalom board being better transport. Had a little fun experimenting with the setup on my Pintail over the weekend and I have a new favourite.

the main thing to look out for is that some gs/slalomish boards have camber (are convex) and that's not a good thing for hills. also turny trucks like trackers would suck on hills. so if you're looking for an all around board, maybe look at something like the rayne hellcat with r2 180's. it's fairly small and light and is definetly stable. not a good carver, but a good all around setup for sure- plus i hear the new sublimated graphics are sick!

To be honest i'm not much of a hill bomber but I know Slalom boards can be used for this. When I do ride hill at speeds beyond what i'd be running cones at I tend to carve as if I was running invisible cones 20-30 feet apart, it keeps you in control and the wobbles at bay in the same way that it's safer to keep carving on a snowboard (at least for novice snowboarders like me on piste where catching an edge while running straight is a huge risk). Alternatively, just tighten the trucks a bit... If your friends are riding cruisers you should be able to keep up. If they have dropped speedboards with stable trucks it might be another story. It is possible to buy an ugly 33" deck with the a 26" wheelbase and cutouts but for the kind of riding I do now, i'd rather have a slalom board.
I have three longboards (a 44" Comet, a 38" Bulldog and a 38" Fibreflex) but it's the Pocket Pistol Slalom board that lives in the trunk of the car with my park board. Maybe i'd use the others more if the trunk wasn't a) tiny and b) full of my kids' park and slalom boards.

Do these shorter boards/different trucks wobble much when riding hills? Most of my friends have big pintails and I want to be able to ride with them here in town without to much hastle.

I use a Comet Proflex 36" with 139mm Tracker Axis/B2 combo (same idea as RTX/S) and Avilas as my main commuter and campus board. It's basically a GS board with a tail. It's super carvable, pumpable, and very functional with the kicktail. I'd say that this kind of setup is much easier to get around on than a long pintail style board.

i agree- unless you desire that deep snowboarding carve feel (which requires a longer board) then a GS board will be best for transportation and some carvin. i use the rayne timeline with some r2 150's (though i wish i had got trackers or seismics!) for riding to class.

Cruise/Carve deck

If size is an issue just get a biggish (33"-34"), stiffish slalom deck from Pocket Pistols, Skatetbuilt or someone. Set it up with some basic trucks (say Tracker RTS/RTX) and soft Zigzags and, in my opinion, you'll have a board that is just as good as transport as something bigger. Maybe slightly harder to push than something with a long stable wheelbase and running low thanks to big cutouts but far easier to pump. I took my 32" Slalom board to the states last time I went on business as it was the only 'long' board I owned that would fit in my case and was amazed how well it worked as a cruiser. I was able to pump/cruise the smooth flat path from Santa Monica pier to Venice each morning without putting my foot down. It turned out to be better transport than the low Pintail that I thought i'd set up as the 'perfect' cruiser.

What makes a great cruise/carve deck?

I'm on the market for my first longboard. I'm really passed the stage of wanting to use my shortboard for tricks and now I just want a board to cruise/carve. I'll be hitting hills here in town mostly, not for speed but for relaxing carving. But next year when I go to USD I want to be able to have a board to get to and from class. I was just wondering what makes a great cruise/carve board? One thing I'm worried about is the size, since I'll be taking it to class I'd like it to be under 38"...and would even prefer it to be 33-35. Is that to short?
Thanks

Well in fact I would like a lot to try that kind of trucks. But as you know, here in France there's only a few surfshop with sector9 products and even fewer with Hydra I guess. I just wondered as I saw your "so positive" post twice in this forum! Just like marketing operation... Anyway, if you have some more picture of the board and trucks, thanks!!!
