Surfing now official sport in Hawaii high schools
Associated Press

WAILUKU, Hawaii -- Surf's up for Hawaii's high schools.

Riding the waves was made an official high school sport Thursday by the state Board of Education, convening on Maui. The decision whether to have a surfing team will be up to each school.

Before voting 9-0, board members heard about an hour of testimony mostly in favor of sanctioning the sport.

Despite its history as the birthplace of surfing, Hawaii had never allowed recognized interscholastic high school surfing teams because of concerns over safety, cost and liability.

"I want my 16-year-old son to have the chance to surf at home for his high school," said longtime Maui surfer Snake Ah Hee.

Public school students now compete in surf meets as members of clubs, but they can't use their schools' names. The new policy will allow such clubs to be official school teams.

The public school Oahu Interscholastic Association has not taken a formal position, but Executive Secretary Dwight Toyama said athletic directors have concerns about potential liability. The private school Interscholastic League of Honolulu has opposed surfing, also citing the liability issue.

That issue led the state Attorney General's Office in 2002 to recommend against surfing as an official sport. Opponents argue that surfing involves an unpredictable environment, including waves, sharks and collisions with other surfers.

An average of about four shark attacks are reported each year somewhere around Hawaii's more than 200 miles of shoreline.

Bethany Hamilton, then 13, lost her left arm when she was attacked by a shark Oct. 31 on Kauai's North Shore. She returned to surfing competition in early January, placing fifth in her age group in the Open Women Division of a National Scholastic Surfing Association meet in Hawaii.

Big 5 and Sports Authority will be selling (this month) the most amazing mini-luge ever developed. The board is called the "Zinger" and will sell for $100.00. The Zinger is actually a but board that features a high-tech design, side handles and the Skatebrake brake system.

This board is a steal at $100.00. I would recommend buying one even if you're not into luge. Ditch the handles and deck and put the trucks on your longboard. High performance equipment will handle speeds without wobbles - 40 mph plus.

Check out the Zinger at: www.variflex.com Click on the Zinger Icon.

On a serious note ...
Some of you may have seen Adam Bateham skate ... He's the kid without any legs who ripped at the Skate Park Of Tampa, CASL, and Damn Am events this year.

Anyway, his mom went in for some minor surgery, got a serious staff infection ... and died last week.

He's adopted ... and she was the one who gave him that 'glass is half full' positive attitude. He's everything a skater should be, independent, open-minded, loyal and fun ...... and now he's all alone.

Anyone who would like to help out with a 'gift' to help with the funeral or just a kind word, please contact Adam at;

Adam Bateham

email; Dayspring23@msn.com

He's only 17, in a wheelchair, and stuck with this tragedy ... so anything you can do would be great.

Thanks, Big Mike

Check him out ... he's a great kid.

From the webmaster

We experienced a 6-hour outage today courtesy our data center/isp who was 'maintaining' a huge A/C power backup system when they apparently shorted something out. It knocked out power to our cabinet and about 900 others.. an unprecedented screw-up on their part.

By August 2004 Ncdsa.com's server will be relocated to a new, better data center at which time we'll begin hosting some regional club forums.

I came across what I believe to be a 1985 G&S Side Cut(red/blk graphics) and am wondering if it is as rare as the artofskateboarding web site says it is. It's been skated but is still in decent shape. Any input would be greatly appreciated. May be interested in trading for another longboard..

Thanks,
Allen

After running the course at the all mighty Bear ditch on my BOZI GS36, I came to the realization that this board is more of a SGS/hill carver than an actual slalom board. So I built myself a prototype tight slalom board to handle the wiggler courses on. I call it the BOZI TS70. 70mm long, 24mm wide, 43mm wheelbase, 8mm wheels, and 17mm trucks. I figure, proportionally, I can run six inch cones on this bad boy. Watch out all you wigglers, I'm about to redefine tight slalom!
