reminds me of back in the day when i took one of those shopping cart type wheels and replaced the front truck with it. sadly, it didn't work out. It was really hard to keep equal weight on each side of the wheel, and when you didn't, the board would hit the round on that side. Happy experimenting!

All that silly stuff about Starwars got me thinking about a Y-wing shaped board. It would have one truck upfornt, and two in the back (one on each leg of the "Y"). I soon realized the Y-shape itself was not really useful, but the principle of a 6-wheeler might still be fun. I'll call it a Delta-shape from now on. I think the double set of trucks tailside would eliminate speedwobbles, while the single truck noseside wouldn't make it too difficult to turn (if you're a noserider, that is). Does anyone if this will work? If I were to build a board like this, what trucks should I use in the rear (narrow, of course, but where to find them)? Also, another idea was mounting two rollerblade wheels, fixed so no truck or something, in the back. Then, when steering, the outside wheel would lift. Would this work?
I don't think I'll be building either setup anytime soon, but I'd like to philosophize about it. Any thoughts on this?

Hi there, I'm new to longboarding but am presently trying to construct my own board. I have, unfortunatly, little to no information about the best way of doing this and would apreciate any information on do's and don'ts. I have access to a large press, for the forming of the board, and was wondering whether to put somthing like cabon fiber or kevlar in a vein through it? Any info would be great, erik.

The 8 wheelers were just a lot of fun. It's like skating a longboard on vert or mini ramps, or surfing a longboard. You have to work the board more, move around shift fee, etc. They're different and fun. I like the 4 wheeled variety better but they really can't be compared to each other. It's like mountain boards and skateboards. If you've never seen one, check out the video http://www.creative-license.com/sap/8wheeler.mov

Hey i was just wondering what the point of an 8 wheeler is (i'm not trying to be an asshole). Is it really that much better than a 4 wheel? I've never seen one (besides pictures) so i don't see why they are so important.

Sonny, buy some polyester resin and laminate the paper on. That or just paint the wood itself, then laminate it. It's not too hard to do, but you should do it to a board that you don't love the first time.

Needing some continuity in my life.... I decided to decorate my new skateboard in the same fashion as my surfboard. I took 4 8+1/2 x 11 sheets of paper and taped them together end to end. I then drew the shape I wanted on them (sort of a curvy sun ray type shape). I them cut the shape out. Then I spray painted the paper. I sprayed it red--yellow--red. The colors fade together. I was really impressed with my ability as this was my first time trying to "airbrush." I then put the sprayed shape down on another 4 sheets taped together. I drew an outline around the shape and cut that out. Then I sprayed that with black---silver faded combo. I clear coated both shapes. Then I taped the shapes together. I then glued the shapes to the deck and put clear grip over them. The only problem is where the shape meets the edge of the deck... I gotta seal that up so no water runis my art. Aside from some sloppiness with the drawing and cutting out of the shapes the thing looks damn good! I'll see if I can get a pic of it on the interweb somehow. If the design were to cover too much of the board... there would be problems getting it to stick. I'm relying on the grip tape to do much of the work.

I have a video posted on my web page of some 8 wheeler action. It was shot this last weekend at a SAP Skateboards demo. Tom Fain (ex-Sims pro, current SAP pro, and the guy in the Sims Snakes ad's of yesteryear) is the rider and maker of the eight wheeler. It's made out of an uncut oldschool blank. He put ACS-500 trucks and some new rock hard wheels. One of the young kids onthe SAP team actually can Ollie, Shove-it and kickflip the thing. It's on video. http://www.creative-license.com/sap/8wheeler.mov Quicktime format

Hey I'm looking to get a longboard that feels just like a surfboard. Problem is I know nothing about longboarding. Also, I live near Chicago and theres not a lot of places where I can try stuff out, so I need some advice. What type of longboard and longboard set-up feels like a surfboard? Someone said that carve board sports makes a nice board with a surfy feeling, but that looks way bogus, with those big wheels and all, and the other thing I heard was that carver skateboards (not carve board sports) makes a nice board truck combination. Anybody know about these 2 companies, or have any other suggestions? Thanks a ton Dane

Hey Glen,
I would be more than happy to post those pix on my site. Also, how did the dump pix turn out? I have a few good ones that I will be putting up (my stinking cable modem kept cutting out today, or they would be done by now)
So shoot me over what you can, thanks, HR

Tom Fain of SAP skateboards made an 8 wheeler and brought it to a demo this last Saturday at the Calvary Chapel Onterio skatepark. I video taped him doing an invert on a 4 foot 1/4 pipe and one of the team riders doing a kickflip and a shove-it on it. Pretty wild. I'll edit the video sometime this week. Hugh would you want to post it on your site? If not, I'll set up page on my business site.

Glen, which 8-wheeler were you needing the dimensions for? One of the original "Outrageous 8-Wheelers I had a friend measure came out like: 29.25"long,13.5"wide,3"nose,5.8" tail. I have dimensions for my spec 8-wheelers also if you're interested.

Fiberglass - yes, you can glass you wood first and then cut it out and sand. This is how the Libtech longboards seem to be made. The glass bond to the wood needs to be good in order to keep it from lifting. I do this and/or laminate a cloth to the deck before cutting it out, it makes production really go fast. If you want the rail to be protected though, you'll want to wrap the deck with glass, like a surfboard.
Anyone have those 8 wheeler dimensions?

when doing fibreglass, can i lay the cloth down first then cut out the shape (and sand)? Or will the clothe become frayed as i cut. i'm thincking of G&S, they do the glass first.

Hey Fuzz,
You might want to consider building a deck with a spline down the underside. If you take a look at the VMG wood series boards, they use an aluminum piece to add quite a bit of stiffness to the decks. (My brother just picked one up and it holds his weight very well with almost no flex, aprox 260 lbs/ 118 kgs, I think that would be around 4032 stones?)
Anyway, I have built a couple with various plywood splines and they really help to remove the flex. I still have to work on getting them to look good however...
The concensous on plywood seems to be that the more layers of laminates, the better.
Have fun... HR
