The 187
On 2/19/2002 WesE wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

They do have a website and even a way there to email them, but good luck getting a response from them. I've had no response from The 187 nor PD. I guess I'll find the phone # and try to call them. Thanks for the tip.

187 Pads
On 2/18/2002 AG wrote in from (216.10.nnn.nnn)

I think the name of the guy who owns 187 Pads is Vinney. His company is in St. Augustine, FL. Don't know if he is on the web but if you call information in FL he is listed. 187's are likely the best knee & elbow pads out there. There are two lines of pads so ask him for the better one. However, I still think skateboard pads are still using 20 yr old technology. With that said, my next pads will be 187's. I think TK is using a set of 187 knee pads these days.

Now for a real helmet, I have no clue what to use but anything is better than Pro-Tec's cheap plastic jobber. There is an Italian company that makes an interesting line of helmets for motorbike time trials. Just can't remember the name. Only thing is they don't have a skateboard helmet look.

Pads
On 2/18/2002 WesE wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

I would probably agree about Pro-tec knee pads, but their elbow pads have been good for me. For impact knee slides on vert terrain, Pro-Designed have a good reputation and their 1.5" padding logically seems to back it up. Another thickly-padded knee pad is the high-end Harbinger, but they cost as much as the PDs. Another pad with a good reputation is made by a company called "The 187" (if you find out where to get this one, please post it back here).

Todays Pads are a joke
On 2/17/2002 AG wrote in from (216.10.nnn.nnn)

Todays top of the line pads are no better than they were in 1982. Snowboard boot material has come along way, why have skateboard pads not enjoyed any improvements. Some companies have even got worse. For example, take a look at the bunk Protect sells these days, one step above Toys-R-Us brand.

Dually
On 2/12/2002 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

hmmm... verrry interesting,

I did get a chance to check out that company's pads at a local bike shop. Looks were nice, but engineering was slightly suspect, as they used a cut-out neoprene sleeve under the straps that it seems would be prone to bunching and slipping. All I'm saying is, I'd try a pair of the dually on before buying. The sole (my main interest) looks like nothing special, but maybe I'm wrong. I'll keep my eye out for these, regardless.

The best shoe I've seen in 10 years
On 2/9/2002 Kaylee wrote in from (68.35.nnn.nnn)

I saw these in a magazine at a local bike shop and had to order a pair. It's been a few weeks, I better call them... Anyway, go to www.vsportgroup.com, click on the Gear Selector, shoes, bmx & dirt jumping, and check out the Dually,
or just try: http://www.vsportgroup.com/gear/shoes/pop_dually.html

Now what do they remind you of?

Luge helmets
On 2/4/2002 Duane wrote in from (63.38.nnn.nnn)

Funny you metion those helmets, I saw the commercial with the skeleton helmet and thought it looked awesome for stand-up. I emailed Terry Holland who is on the US skeleton squad but I haven't got an answer yet (I suspect they are busy, right about now). He had consulted with me a few weeks earlier on plastics that are easily formed, for hard travel cases for the skeleton sleds. Seems that travel hassles are not limited to skateboarders. We had a good bs session, he metioned that some of the sliders might be interested in street luge summer training.

I already emailed the skeleton association and they said that some of the helmets are made for sky diving and are shouldn't be used on asphalt.

Vans
On 1/28/2002 Duane wrote in from (63.21.nnn.nnn)

True, the Van's sole has no equal. The padding and support is another matter, two decades of shoe design have left the "old school" model just too flat and flimsy for my taste these days. The Vans Rowley XLT is great, though, modern upper, padded top but not as much as some, running shoe sole, except with good old gum rubber bottom I love. Avoiding the circus-clown look, the all black ones are actually attractive. The gum rubber is a flat layer, so if (when) I wear through I can patch in flat gum rubber off a roll. Runs super small, one full size smaller than normal.

interesting basic info and review of shoes at, I am ashamed to say, a scooter site. Hey, I found it through Google...

Apparently, air soles are not all that, like Lexx found out. The DC Equation is looking pretty fine. Overall, though, looks like mbhidel's suggestion is going to rule: EVA insoles.

Vans yeah
On 1/28/2002 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

Gavin- I *totally* agree,

except when you run out and plant your heel. Then, they don't feel so good anymore. Thus my regrettable need for some puffy-tech action. Having reviewed B-Ball vs. Skate sneaks, I have to say, B-Balls are way uglier. Both suffer from design-hype overkill, but B-ball shoes much more so. *Why* can't anyone just make a simple, stylish shoe with uncomplicated lines? Like a Vans hi-top with an air sole? Is it too much to ask not to have massive extruded polyurethane molds all over the damn place?

Anyone need a shoe designer?

skateshoes
On 1/28/2002 gavin wrote in from (194.82.nnn.nnn)

there's only one skateshoe worth considering, vans hi-tops (or sk8-hi's or old schools as they're called now).

i bought my first new pair in 12 or so years last summer (just such a pain they're so expensive in the UK), and remembered why nothing else feels as good as the vans sole.

sneaks
On 1/24/2002 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

most skate shoes look like a$$, all puffy tech and whatnot.

Any ideas on just a skate shoe, air sole, well-made, looks ok? Or just stick to the b-ball sneaks? (the last Jordans made me want to retch) Emerica Heretic model shoes look okay. DC Manteca looks mighty fine in Blue, too. I don't think either have air sole, though.

p.s.: I wouldn't buy the Pony "freethrow". Looks great and stylish, but the sole is awful... same basic, budget, Chinese sweat-shop shoe as Payless Shoes, but at a higher price.

Giro
On 1/18/2002 Duane wrote in from (63.21.nnn.nnn)

I bought a Giro Nine off of ebay for $48, new. It is the exact same as the Semi, except it comes with removable ear flaps and removeable plugs for the vent holes. The helmet has quality dual-density padding, sits reasonably low profile (looks much, much better than a bike helmet), and is comfortable, and cool in hot weather. It has a great, quality chin strap that is so comfortable that havig it snug is OK. My melon is no slouch, yet the large fits easily. I would assume the larger ones are very big, as I wear a XL in most headgear. I stacked right onto my head in this helmet, and did't even realize my head hit hard until I saw the scrape marks on top. Highly recommended.

Helmets
On 1/18/2002 TheBoz wrote in from (216.210.nnn.nnn)

Looking for a new skate helmet. The shell on my 80's Flyaway seems a bit too flexy. All the usual suspects (Pro-Tec, etc.) are too small for my XL melon. While searching for a bike helmet I found the Giro Semi, a visorless BMX helmet that should fit.
Does anyone have any experience?

Check HughR homepage (check the links section) and Chris Chaputs pages, both have good examples of sliding gloves, alterantively, go to the search section of these pages and type "sliding gloves", you will find the topic has been covered quite extensively

Sliding Gloves
On 1/9/2002 Tom wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Dom, I don't know of any suppliers of sliding gloves here in the UK, although it is very easy to make a pair yourself, just get some heavy duty garden gloves and one of those white plastic chopping boards and stick A to B so to speak, admitantly this is about as basic as they come so you may want to add some bells and whistles
