deminishing return
On 8/29/2007 herbn wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

a halfinch wide wheel would have a slowness to it because of a flattening, double the width to 1.0 inch and you get a faster wheel (not twice as fast) double it again and you may get an even faster wheel (some of the most current wheels are around 2 inches wide) i think the urithane has to be very much state of the state of resilient urithanes and the percentage gain will be much less than the gain from .5 to 1.0. Now double it again and i think you can be nearly certain that the reduced rate of improvement will go totally negative,a loss of speed. You don't mind that, but there is a possibity that the increased traction will be inconsistant like really awesome grippy until a certain lean angle where it tips onto an edge or any flex in the axle or wheel that tips the wheel on edge causing a tremendous sudden loss of traction.

wide...
On 8/28/2007 hc wrote in from United States  (71.198.nnn.nnn)

I like the idea of carving steeper hills slowly (think carveboard) so I don't mind the loss in speed (in some ways helpful)

Haven't try the double truck setup idea, but I don't like to deal with the resistence (bushing wise) of two back truck. like it loose....

I see chaput got a box of momo's
me want to try some...

Wider contact patch
On 8/27/2007 herbn wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

I 'm not sure what the limiting factor is,it seems as though wider can be fast rolling if the resilience is up,the best example is how a narrow rollerblade wheel is not all that fast because it flattens out under pressure and runs like a inflated tire with to little pressure in it. Widening a wheel makes it roll faster, this is a diminishing return depending on the nature of the urithane, a non resilient formula will run like a flat tire all the time. I know a wide wheel ,or pair of wheels, will give you a wide contact patch, but in a actual turn it may just flex and tilt up.

bear grizzly comes in 10mm.
you can shorten the hanger using various methods.

I wonder how much more traction can be achieve with more urethan contact.

stress distribution
On 8/26/2007 herbn wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

I would think that to do two wheels per side as properly as possible,( i don't think it's all that great of an idea, really) i would do 10 mm bearings in the first one and eight on the outer wheel, i think you could even have seperate axle nuts, but a special spacer would be easier, and probabely stronger. Can bear trucks be bored to 10mm?

Truck Modification
On 8/25/2007 Jordan wrote in from United States  (24.6.nnn.nnn)

Hey Guys, what type of mods can be done to say a bear grizzly trucks axle?

I have a few things I am thinking about... One (which I know I saw a pic of but cant recall where) is to put two wheels on each side of the truck, I assume this means a new longer axle...

Also, are their stronger materials? So I could stick with 8mm (for easier to get bearings) axle but get the strength of 10mm? Or should I just pay the extra $$$ for another set of 10mm bearings?

Thanks...

I was just wondering what type of mod's could be done to allow me too use 4 wheels per truck, for extra grip of course!

paris
On 8/20/2007 hc wrote in from United States  (71.198.nnn.nnn)

I was at a shop looking for some sk8 stuff,
saw the paris up close, looks nice.
I notice the paris and gullwing alpine baseplate have similar features and same smooth finish. And the new charger is shaped similar to a paris.

I wonder if they are both made at the same place in china.

from their site paristruckco.com

"What makes Paris better? Our trucks are poured with 356.2 virgin aluminum. Unlike many other trucks out there, there is no left over aluminum from old pours thrown back into the melting pot, each Paris Truck is made with brand new pure metal then gravity molded. Which means each truck is poured and then spun in the mold, resulting in a stronger more dense molecular bond. A secondary heat treatment process then adds strength and durability to the final product."

can anyone validate this? stronger than traditional sand casting?

this retailer somehow labeled the paris truck as made in USA

guitars
On 8/17/2007 hc wrote in from United States  (71.198.nnn.nnn)

donald,

Your Ibanez example is shocking. The profit margin for that guitar must be very high. I believe Ibanez is a Japanese brand who did copies themselves in the early days.

I don't know much guitar but a coworker
bought a Blueridge (china made martin copies) cause he can afford a real Martin.

and he also told me the story how the Japanese Fenders became highly desirable.

I can relate Slim. What Mr. Powell does...is up to him. Marketing. All I know is....Some damn nice stuff comes out of Germany, and Europe in general. Some of my nicer bearings are....modified, GENUINE GMN steels. Unobtainable now. The grease pack steels were popular in 1978, but these are different.

swiss design?
On 8/17/2007 herbn wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

i don't think there is anything spectacularly different going on in a swiss bearing, everything thing is pretty much standard shape ,but the difference is in the materials (swiss steel) and polishing (workmanship) I guess you could call that "the swiss design" on nearly as big of a deal as oust's design or chris' biltins, what the country of origin of biltin's? those are the two interesting designs as far as i can tell.not all chinese shops are equal there are some prettygood bearings coming out of some of them, my current fav cheapo child labor bearing are flips' abec 7 or 5.

and the broken axle
On 8/17/2007 donald20 wrote in from Germany  (84.62.nnn.nnn)

forgot about the broken axle:
we don't really know the cause yet.it might have something to do with faulty material.warranty issues are below 1% of the actual amount of trucks sold.but nevertheless we feel bad when those things happen, even if we really can't have any influence on that singular case.

A New Edition of the #1 Bestseller

The World Is Flat 3.0 is Thomas L. Friedman's account of the great changes taking place in our time, as lightning-swift advances in technology and communications put people all over the globe in touch as never before-creating an explosion of wealth in India and China, and
challenging the rest of us to run even faster just to stay in place.

The World Is Flat 3.0 is an essential update on globalization, its opportunities for individual empowerment, its achievements at lifting millions out of poverty, and its drawbacks--environmental, social, and political, powerfully illuminated by the Pulitzer Prize--winning author of The Lexus and the Olive Tree.

china
On 8/17/2007 donald20 wrote in from Germany  (84.62.nnn.nnn)

china is not an option because these guys are very likely to copy the construction and then sell it
here's an example from the guitar world
ibanez steve vai retails in germany for 1699.00 euros the same guitar from a goon who works at ibanez if offered on ebay for 110 euros.
these guys are copycats and a danger for business

he told me he didn't hit a big crack or anything...

this type of thing seems like a rare occurance.
street skaters have big impact force but their wheels are small.

the next btach will be made in the usa, same source from where the splitfires came from.thanks to gary and wax for the contact.
the reason for this is simple:we want to cut the costs and that's why we decided to outsource from germany.cutting the costs couild also translate in a better price later on.we'll see about that.

it's true
On 8/17/2007 donald20 wrote in from Germany  (84.62.nnn.nnn)

i have to admit that this rumor is true.the bearings in there are from russia.the trucks are polished by kids from indonesia.they polish the hangers with their tongues, this makes the process also very cheap.me and frank we originate from mars.
so much for the rumors

and hey hc no harm intended,i just had to laugh when i read that.

china
On 8/16/2007 slim wrote in from United States  (75.61.nnn.nnn)

I suspect if bones swiss were being made in china, mr. powell would say so! after all, he has no problem calling his chinese made bearings "china red". (and they're basically the bones design, just made in china).

i try my best not to buy any chinese goods. shoes are my biggest sin. nearly everything else can be purchased from non-chinese sources. (regarding indy soft goods: i bet they are chinese - after all, nhs handles all the soft goods. the dlx stuff which was another wing of the fausto empire is a mix though - the real/krooked/anti-hero tshirts they sell at the retail store in SF are made in usa.
