just get a piece of oak,lay the logon on top of it and carefully trace with a pencil, mitercut a wedge, and beltsand, ect ect it's a little project, you may need to buy or borrow tools,or go to that hated father in law's house, because he has a workshop, but if you want to keep that logon as a collectable don't drill it,unless it's all scrapped up just from 25 years of existance,if it's mint don't drill,it doesn't ride particularly well anyway, honnest.

Very bizarre, the sag in the board provides the only turning angle, supposedly it has one needle bearing, which was mentioned by Mike Weed once in an interview, and two very light sets of bearings that ontake side loads, weight is carried on needle bearings, this board supposedly cost 20,000 dollars at the time, maybe thats for the whole set of three that this guy made,i figure the moneys gotta be in custom bearings/wheels.I've never heard or seen this board, come to think of it in the magazines i have from that era ,the only pictures of boards from signal hill are Guy Grundy's Infinity speed board, who came in second? what were they riding? never even mentioned, not to mention 3rd,4th,5th ect...well enjoy the pics, any additional info, race results ect, would be cool.

Tall downhill wheels

IDI, the company that made Pacers, Yo-yo's, Sims Snakes, and a host of other wheels in the 70's, made a downhill wheels that was never for sale. Those are probably the wheels in the picture that you are talking about. When I was a kids in the 70's, a friend of my friends dad was the production manager at IDI and he showed us a set of wheels that were probably 3 1/2 to 4" tall and really skinny that were made for running at Signal Hill. They were kind of UFO green/blue/mold in color. IDI was the Kryptonic/Labeda of it's day in that they made wheels for everyone. We used to get 2nds of Sims Snakes and Yo-yo's that had bits of discolored urethane in them. My friend still has his old, green with a slight bit of red, Sims Snakes. I've tried to chase down the guy who was the production manager in the day but haven't had much luck.

I've got a set of these(RSI Surge's) on an old downhill board. They are exactly 3" tall, so 76mm wheels. They are 2" wide(51mm) on the bottom, and are completely urethane. They are the most monstrous 70's wheels I've seen, but I'm sure they don't compare to the 4" UFO's. Also...they aren't looseball wheels, they take standard bearings. All in all some pretty cool wheels.

Very Tall Wheels

In the archives of the Slalom page, there is a photo (posted 2/22?) of Tommy Ryan standing in the starting gate of a downhill race. My guess is that this could be at Akron, OH. Anyway, he's on a very rare Turner downhill board, with Strokers and very tall, very narrow wheels. They are almost so narrow you'd have to almost assume there is a large diameter core inside. Anyway, this would be one model of wheel I can't identify. I also remember a wheel, just toward the end of the loose ball-bearing days (circa late '75, early '76), called Surge. I believe they were produced by RSI (Roller Sport Industries), from the same urethane as the earlier Stoker model. They were of a relatively standard width, but were quite tall. They were, at least, 3" tall, and maybe as much as 5". I also believe that they were cupped for loose-bearings. Most commercially viable "downhill", back in the day, was a straight downhill, straight line speed shot. I guess today, it'd more appropriately be called "speedboarding". Anyway, that made very tall, very narrow wheels practical.

Herbn,
Are you referring to the UFO`s ?? I nabbed a set off eBay a while back. They sport the oversized bearings. Rock hard like high 90a-ish. I also have the jumbo Ampros and Roadrunners. Both which use standard bearings. I can send pics if`n you like....

When people mention tall and narrow wheels for highspeed downhill, they're probabely refering to Dave Dillbergs, pacers, that skinny board that bubbles out in the standing area. It was definitely one of the most photographed stand ups,i think he won with it the last year they had those Signal hill races. They looked like big machined hard industrial urithane,95a perhaps just sliced from 4 or 5 inch round stock, maybe frozen,(liquid nitrogen)and machined to fit those oversized bearings, hard urithane probabely worked well,Signal hill was a straight race,on aparently real smooth asphalt.

Yes! does anyone know where we can see pics of old skateboarder mag. I Had a subsciption, so I had every issue even all the action nows' until the company sent me an apology for the discont. of the mag and gave me surfer mag to make up the difference. Anyways I moved and my Dad throw everyone out, including any playboys I had at the time! Now I see them being sold for unreal prices (the skate magazines that is), I got over it but I would at least like to see some of the pics even If I can't have the magazine. Obe Won Kanobe, you my only hope!

Gullwings,i was always let down by the way they solid stop against the kingpin, pheonix worse than HPG's,i guess they turn sharp enough for slalom, with the shortness of the board.Didn't care for the lazers, the hook in the pivot, the steering wasn't bad,i didn't think they were as stabile as trackers, especially when set loose,i had tracker extrack in magnesium and aluminum sixtracks, rode them for a long time in pools(cherry hill)then switched to tighter Indys for backyard ramps,no carving, well not back then.Indy 109 were the old ones 101 was a freestyle size that came out later 88's were old too,111 are also freestyle size, wait that might be Thunder.I had original tracker fulls, right after they stopped threading them all the way for loose bearings,i'm gonna build a new board for those too, they steer ok pretty good at reasonable speed. You can probabely tighten them up and go real fast,i'm sure someone did.

I was looking at that web site ,of the Skateboarder covers, looking for hints to which ones i have(most of my covers are long gone)i think i have the weaver pool kickturn cover from volume 2 ,if it has his interview it's definite, how far are we away from having the whole mag as opposed to just a teasing cover?i think i almost spend enough on local phone units(commercial phone service is a bitch) to warrent dsl cable modem,so that kind of down load would not be to outrageous.I don't think it would devalue the paper copies that much, all the sealed/resealed mint copies could stay sealed.

there is an ad where they show all sims boards including the never released phase2 experimental,in that ad taperkicks and superlights are listed as being constructed of brazilian ash,i've made ash boards and they are nothing like taperkicks, somewhat heavier and much tougher, maherajahs seemed like they were of ash construction, quite frankly Taperkicks seemed like poplar, very light and quite fragile, unless the brazilian ash is a fast growing lightweight easy to chip ,version, that looks like poplar:)
