Last week my girlfirend drags me to her parents house for her younger brother's birthday. I'm mostly bummed until I remember that I have my 54-incher in the trunk and her folks live on an excellent sloping, swerving, two-mile dead end street.
So after the cake, I grab her brother say "Let's hit the hill." He's never been on a longboard before.
After seeing my first run, his eyes light up and he climbs to the top. By the end of the session, which lasted until about 2 a.m., he was nose walking and carving with serious soul.
The next day he went to solidskate.com and is eagerly awaiting his newest board.
Another convert.

Hey Cliff,
Is Roger Milhalko the young (early 20's?) dude who was ripping the pool at the King of Kona last April? I remember this rather small dude in long black pants, no shirt, and what appeared to be a custom longboard which had the fish shape of a mid-80's oldschool deck. I've never seen anyone sling a longboard around in a tight pool like he did. His poolskating was one of the most memorable scenes from the Kona contest.

LONG POST!
Cow Palace Sports and Boat Show, 1964.
1st International Skateboard Championships, Anaheim, CA, 5-22/23-65.
1975, Mid draught weather wise, skating Tunnel Road every day with the Alot-A-Flex Team and so many others.
Mid to late 70s, Racing at La Costa with so many greats. Torger Johnson, The Logans, Alva, Hester and Skoldberg, Steve Sherman, Bobby Piercy, Tommy Ryan, and most every other great you ever read about.
1976, getting kicked off of Tunnel Road and then moving to even better hills in Berkeley, CA.
Skating and remaining friends with the 1965 Northern California Skateboard Champion, Rudy Esquer who now resides in Maui, HI.
1976 to the early 1980s. Skating with Chris PettyJohn. Chris and I would ride the hills and do what we call "Doubles". Both riders would mirror image what the other was doing, slides, carves standing or crowching for miles. We were in sync and it was a trip!
Being team mates with Danny Bearer, Torger Johnson, Steve and Dave Hilton, George Trafton, Wendy Bearer, Colleen Boyd, Chris Piccolo, Laurie Turner, Laura Allen, Danny Escalante, Bryan Beeman, Karl Webber, Andy Herrick, Steve Peterson, All of whom skated for the Hobie Team in 1965.
In the 70s, my team mates were, Paco Preito, Jeff Sand, Dave, Chris and Anthony Fisher. All from the Alot-A-Flex Team. This was the best all around team I ever witnessed in my skating years!
My team mates from the Santa Cruz Team included, Michael Goldman, Judy Oyama, Terry Brown/Benko, Jon and Don Oshei, Jamie Hart, John Krisick, Merrick, Criddle, Ewuel, Bostic and the best racer in history, John Hutson. (Ed Economy, it's Hutson and not Hudson).
Doing a stunt role for Columbia Pictures with Stacy Peralta in the early 80s. Skating down Lombard Street in San Francisco, CA. 8 Hairpins in one block! The surface is brick! Going back in the year 2002 and doing it again with my current team mates, Team Gravity.
My Gravity Team Mates are: Michael Bream, the Brain. Brad Edwards, you can't say Brad without saying Rad! Dustin Taylor James Addonizzio Yancey Myer Isabelle Caudle Cabbage Sergio Yuppie Roger Milhalko The Staff
Skating with riders from Australia, the US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, all of Europe, Spain, South Africa, Japan and Korea.
Watching the view from the top of the Berkeley Hills before each skate run. The Golden Gate Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge, the Richmond Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel, Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands. The San Francisco Skyline, the Fog, Mount Tamalpias to the north of the Golden Gate.
The area I grew up in made me the skater that I am. The Berkeley Hills!
Competing in: NV La Costa, CA Catalina, CA Laguna Seca Berkeley, CA Signal Hill Capitola, CA Bellvue, WA Akron, OH Mammoth Hot Heels Switzerland Tantalus in HI Too many others to remember!
MEETING, BECOMING FRIENDS, WITNESSING THE GREATNESS AND SKATING WITH SERGIO YUPPIE!
Racing at WLAC and winning the day before my 50th birthday.
Having nothing but fun with my schwag lifestyle while competing in the FCR Series!!!!!! Being 3rd in the Open after a season of racing. Knowing that others who have not been able to make all of the races would have knocked me down the ladder if they had been able to attend. Smiling after making all of the races:)
Making friends around the world with others who enjoy the same thing I enjoy, skateboarding.
All of the fantastic things I've forgotten.
"Been there, done that", NEVER SOUNDED SO GOOD!
Looking forward to more,
Cliff Coleman

I wanted to make sure i ate every last crumb of my words. I checked out some pictures from the Bear - what-a-f**&ing ditch!... and gave thought to the idea of closing down a major road to have some organized downhill fun. MissouriMatt just hasn't had that fun yet. It looked real soulful. Ride on soul riders... for the pure fun of it.

Thanks for the great discription of a very soulful ride. When the soul board is at it's best, its poetic discription of soulful rides. I bow down to the soul in slalom. Maybe will even hook up one day with cones and soul.

Okay, this is where soul and slalom meet. Yesterday, skating with McCree, he gave me the missing piece of advice on my "technique"...hold my trailing arm closer to my body. So between JG's advice on stance and hip position, Brady's yelling at me to BEND MY KNEES every run I take, and now Mark's advice on my trailing arm I have seen a remarkable increase in speed over the last few months.
Then yesterday it happened...on one of the last runs on the "warm-up" 6' inlines, halfway through the course I stopped being aware of the cones, of pumping, of making the course. It was just me, floating through it, the board somehow doing the work seemingly without any input from me. Yeah, floating, unaware of any feeling other than going fast, really fast, and making it. And there was a BIG smile on my face after that run...but then there is on most any run I make...
Later, after the real work with on the offset course, I set the inline back up. Made the course on my tight board, then floated through it on my hybrid board, then again on my 38" pintail, and finally on my 42" cutaway. Yeah! Making 6' cones on a 42" cutaway, floating the whole way through. There is soul in slalom...I guarantee it.

Ahh, Brian, you show the serious defensive nature one might expect in slalom (I'm joking, now. I assume you just wanted to turn me on to the slalom soul). But please note the double negative. “Not that there is no soul in slalom or downhill” means that in my estimation there is soul in slalom and downhill.
I merely wanted to set apart the h0dad’s event from other events, where lines have predetermined boundaries, and winners and losers are anointed through agreed upon performance measures. I’m not really into events that are followed with long discussions of rules and wheel base, etc. The tedium of events does not hold a lot of appeal to me.
But despite that, I hope to make it to Folly Beach next year for the soul of seeing other skaters. When I see the slalom crowd in action with big cheesy grins, I’m sure my appreciation for the event will grow. And to the downhill crowd, I understand the adrenaline rush. Ride on. There’s soul in all of it. My criteria for a soul event was really based on an event that is not an event at all. Knowing that a tunnel would be open and not being able to resist the opportunity, pedal powered or not… that’s the kind of soul event I wanted to hear more about. Go hOdad!
Ride on all…

There is plenty of soul in slalom, it all depends on who's skating, and how. Check out any bank slalom event and tell me there is no soul in flying around a huge ditch. Check out photo's and video from the Bear.

Green to go...time zone difference maybe, 6th is the day after tomorrow here. Hey dont worry, h0dad's plank is his escape pod to glory.
Whoah let h0dad relate a most excellent occasion for adrenaline. Riding a local 8 storey building one afternoon, a grommit arrives, all wild and full of stoke.
"Yeah this place is the sheeeit h0dad" says grom, and gets busy with his kickflipper, cutting in and out through upcoming traffic with the walkman on. h0dads taking runs on his pintail, working in around this kamikazi pilot. Soon a security guard comes up to the roof. h0dads kicking for the top ramp when this guy comes charging out of the door at him. Whoah ***k exclaims h0dad and commits to his run in an effort to escape.
The guy chases h0dad down 6 flights. It's like, "use the force h0dad, find the line, relax"..the guy is panting like an animal, really trying to gain. He could be seen rounding each bend as h0dad rounds the next.
Practically skated down the stairs to get away.
Came back two weeks later for a session; turns out that the guard was just having a bit of fun in his trainers. To this day h0dad skates in the building unmolested, while the guards turn a blind eye, as long as no groms accompany, and nobody plays kamikaze.

h0daddy! Is it on or not? I'm not clear. there are so few orgainized soul events... not that there is no soul in slalom or downhill... but a real soul event... like breaking the rules of another event cuz you had to ride the tunnel. There was a guy awhile back that scaled the arch in St. Louis and paraglided off. Yea, he was arrested when he landed
watch out when you get to the other end of the tunnel. don't let 'em take you.

hOdad, You had me there fer a second....whfewwwww!!!!!
Here`s a solution to the tunnel to nirvana delima...
Get a cheap buke from a garage sale and figger out how to attach your skate deck for a quick release. Then you practice yer dismount onto yer board.
I can see it now....hOdad leads the pack...wait!! What`s he doin`??? hOdad has done the unbelievable....and worse yet, the discarded bike has taken out the front 30 of the pack and has left him to cherish the ride all to hOdad`s self. As hOdad clears the tunnel, hOdad drops into a stylish coleman and pops into a waiting vehicle that wisks him away.
Who was that man that dared to be dif`rent? . . . . The following year, same race, all the top contenders have longboards strapped to thier bikes.....

Most bogus development Moose, it seems there is a rule that vehicles be pedal powered.
No problem, h0dad will however develop a hearing impairment, or perhaps a thick accent and the total inability to understand english..."je ne comprends pas..au revoir!"

Ahhh h0dad... all is forgiven. Sometimes irony does not ring out in a post on a forum.
Your big downhill tunnel run with our 2 wheeled friends is coming this weekend. Show them what it is to live your craft, and show them that style is movement not attitude.

Just venting a little at the annexation of surf culture by the quick fix soul-on-a-plate culture..

My friend brought his friend's longboard over to my house 6 months ago and once I got on, it was like a drug. I grab my board and ride down the street and carve some beautiful lines in the evening with the cool wind in my face and flapping through my shirt and I feel the wheels hold, just so, to the pavement and feel the fluid, snakelike motion as I gently carve through my neighborhood. Nothing in this world like it. Once you start, you can't stop, it stings.

Sounds like hOdad has sold his soul and gotten a new rod. He`s no longer driven by the line up at the break in as much as how his new rod looks at the line up in the parking lot.
SAY IT AIN`T SO......??????

Soul is a new black SUV to recapture some of the youthful vigor and spirit that you lost as you worked hard to gain that partnership...you drive a stormy, winding coastal road at dusk, the surfers in the combi admire your stylish lines as you overtake.
