i woke up at 2 a.m. this morning and couldn't fall back asleep. i laced up my bobos and went out on a solo mission. there was a slight buzz in the air that was focused in the haze induced halos on the street lights. a couple of drunks hollered as i rolled by through the puddle of a crushed beer can. the snake like tracks of my wheels faded after a few yards and i began the slight uphill push before the inevitable. my vision momentarily blurred by the fat tear drops that eventually dipped down my cheeks. at the bottom of market street, a tight backside turn into an alley almost proved deadly as my real wheels slid through an unseen oil spill. the beating of my heart revvvved and i pushed even faster to con myself out of being scared. as i entered the down town, my pushes mirrored the tempo of the yellow lights that blinked to moderate traffic speed. i swerved between the parking meters with reckless abandon and cut into the adjacent lot of freshly paved macadam. each carve produced an interesting hiss as my wheels peeled off of the brand new surface. i pushed on and created a spontaneous slalom course up the middle of fourth street complete with invisible cones. as i zigged i noticed the unmistakeable red and blue flash and flutter on the buildings in front of me that can only be produced by those bastard police siren lights. much to my amazement he passed me by, apparently for bigger prey. a few blocks ahead i passed said police officer with his knee in the back of a law breaker. i must say it was kind of fun to skate by unnoticed. as a matter of fact, i would bet that my entire journey went by on the sly (except for the drunks who probaly don't remember me anyhow).

Soulriding is when you hop on your board and become the hum of the wheels on the road. You then glide down the street carving and moving like an eagle in flight. Tricks and spins, hops and jumps become like thrash metal next to a smooth Hendrix blues solo. They are fun but not tonight. Sould riding is when you meet your soul on the board and become the ride, the wind ,the street too.Its the essence of who you are, its you all of it. No name, no tomorrow, no yesterday just the ride. You are the ride and thus ride having to prove nothing as your ride melts you into the scene.

The other day a kid went by on a short board and saw me on my big cruiser. His eyes lit up and he practically wet himself with confusion and excitement. Of course I let him take a ride, and the poor kid didn't want to ride his crappy short board anymore. Another life saved.

12 Year Old Semi Long Purple Blank from Marin Surf Sports, traded to me in exchange for a T-Shirt Design in 1991. Rode it with Skate Ladeira Down Hill Clube in Rio De Janero 2002. Lent it to my baby sister for one semester while she was at Arcada. A hippy switched one of the trucks from Indipendant to Venture. Got it back and it shot out from under me on Braodway above Embarcadero in SF. When the car hit it, it turned into dirt. The truck was sitting in the road in a pile of termite food.
