Donald, Please look again at when Wefunk made a 'foam Kicktail' board. I believe they were on the edge of going Out of business when you started producing boards. Oh, and I guess my '79 Kryptonics 'Foam + kicktailed' board, or my SantaCruz Airtech from '85 don't count, even if I used them for Slalom racing when they were NEW.

back in 2002/2203 there was an italian guy with a strange name"umberto guggolini" or whatever his name spelled like,i didn't do my homework on that issue.he had a board made of wood sporting a real kicktail and a deep concave.a few months later christoph baumann showed up with his version of that board which looked superfunctional and which also inspired us to do the rocka.back in summer of 2004 there was a gentleman named paul price who handed me drawings for his slalom board which were very old.a board that was supposed his pro model with g&s which apparently had never been done.that board was the roadster.so we ended up making paul his board in late fall 2004 as the first ever foamcore kicktail board i had seen so far-please correct me here if i'm wrong. in the late 70's i remember g&s having semi kicktail slalom boards.the truck was not placed where we would put it today. also i remember skaterbuilt coming out with decks made in a poolboard mould.these boards had a nice concave and a tail.was that in 2004 too? i don't know that anymore. and we know about the axe history from a previous post by richy. coming to the point: some did what they wanted to do and believed in at a certain time of their life, some of those "inventions" are really cool and they advance the functionality of the product and the quality of the race to say so. that's what it's all about.

And in early 2004 I brought my AXE deck to the racing market. And yes Luca was my biggest inspiration. At the Trocadero he walked up to me and said your board looks like mine, and I said actually my truck is wedged in the kick and I have a flat molded concave. He rode it and said this is good. I did not invent the wheel, but I think I improved it! The funny thing is this construction is the norm now, but when I first showed up with this board I heard alot of negative input and was told by many of my friends that this board would not work. So what happened, I became more consistant in my racing and had my best results when I started riding my AXE deck! It takes guts to go out with your own cash and back up your new ideas.

Misguided Slalom Kicktail Complaints

Hmmm, slalom specific decks with kicktails go back to the early 1980's (and possibly earlier) to my memory with the innovation of a few rare S-cambers. I could be missing something however because I was from Wyoming back then and not in the center of any racing mecca(but sorta peripheral to the Colorado racing mecca - LONG before COSS). That's not to mention "true" kictail slalom racing setups like Luca's Oak deck, plus myself winning my first rinky-dink race in Cheyenne Wyoming in 1977(?) on a G&S warptail as well as countless other contempory skaters in that era slaloming on wood kicktail boards because we were young and could'nt afford the spendier G&S Fibreflex not to mention a foam/fiberglass Tritan deck from Colorado or a Turner. Add to that, a lot of us "clueless" racers back then had our foot on the back truck or behind it on the kicktail until we saw all the "fast guys" like Tommy Ryan, Piercy, Randy Smith, Mike Williams, Hester, Hutson, Bob Skoldberg racing with their feet "mostly" BETWEEN the trucks(but not always) using the flex of the deck to pump speed, and somehow suppossedly turning better that way. So of course, we all followed in their footsteps.
Funny how history works, years later, I see and meet Cliff Coleman racing Hood River 2002 with a wood ply deck with his foot behind the rear truck on a "true" kicktail. Cliff back then was a good solid Open class racer, but noone paid that much attention to his choice of deck or why. We were all too busy racing on a modified 1970's/1980's paradigm and watching Cross, Chicken, Arab, Richy, Mollica, Ransom, Evans, Maysey, O'Shei battling out on flex/camber decks of various combinations of bamboo, wood, foam, carbon fiber sheet, fiberglass, tri and bi ax fiberglass, etc.
Pre 2003 Worlds: There's word of 2 weirdos from Russia(Vlad Popov) and Italy(Luca Giammarco) running around on wood. Must not be able to afford foam/fiberglass or something???????? I meet Vlad at Breckenridge 2003 riding a totally stiff and flat non-camber Roe foam fiberglass, PVD trucks. He didn't win, but he was quick enough.
2003 World Championships Morro Bay California - I finally see and meet Luca Giammarco. He "one-gunned" the whole weekend on that 1970's looking oak deck, late 1970's looking Euro trucks of somesort(non-offset, but maybe some hanger narrowing and maybe 8mm'd axle?? still, it was lo-teck) and Avalons. His setup looked like it came from a garage sale. He rode with his back foot behind the rear truck on the kicktail. He Kicked ass. Still does. Suddenly everyone talks about how we did so well "despite" his "outdated" setup. Slowly, a few people start realizing he did so well BECAUSE of his tried-and-true setup.
Now we know flat and stiff works great, the right camber and stiffness in a flex system can also work great. Kicktails work great. Non-kicktail decks still work great. Concave or Nonconcave works great. To ALL of you out there who are making slalom equipment, especially Scott Moore of Subsonic, Gareth Roe, and Chicken, Wax and Fluitt, Wallgren and Gesmer, Larry Balma, and Chaput, I say "Thank You" for making some awesome stuff that I have and still do slalom on.
Just my 2 cents of slalom history observations. Those old and more recent memories of racing(and skating in general) in Wyoming and Colorado and elsewhere are some of my favorite memories of all time.

Well as we sell 'kicktail' boards from Gecko, Pavel, Skaterbuilt and Axe, it won't take an expert to notice the real differences.
The Pavel weighs less and utilises a different construction, previously seen on high end street decks, notibly the Flip range. It is a definate step forward for reasonably priced slalom decks.
Whining that a Pavel looks like an Axe is dumb, as its all about shapes. Its like saying a Hotspot copies a Zig Zag....they are both ROUND!!!
The differences are real, the quality is superb, and we are happy to sell these decks alongside all the others.
Its a real shame that with the dollar down the pan at the moment US buyers will not be gaing the cost advantages we in England do, where the Pavels run at very similar prices to shipping decks in from the US. Having said that the PAvels are super nice, so even with shipping, and taking into account their superior construction it would still be worth US buyers seeking them out.

I would like to personally thank my sponsors Pocket Pistols Skateboards, KHIRO Hardcore Skateboard Products, NITRO Explosively Fast Bearings, GOG Racing Trucks, Allboards Sports, ProDesigned, Curve and Carhartt. I couldn’t be happier with the quality and performance that these products have provided me. PPS remains on the cutting edge and continues to rule. Thanks Chicken! KHIRO sk8 products are dependable, versatile and just about cover the spectrum of any rider's needs/wants. The NITRO bearings (also made by KHIRO) have proven time and time again to me that they are by far the fastest bearing I have ever ridden. Khiro Bob does not mess around when it comes to the quality and performance of his products. If you have not yet tried them, you should treat yourself. For those who do not like to clean bearings all the time (myself included), I have a few tricks... email me. What can I say about GOG other than WOW...these trucks are phenomenal and very user friendly reducing wrench time significantly. To the entire "gang" thanks for all you do. Prodesigned pads are top quality (and I bail a lot) Curve and Carhartt both have supported me by providing performance/lifestyle apparel. And to Bola at Allboards sports, "thanks". IMO, best retail shop on the planet. Thanks for your continued support and friendship. Jason

I will have some foot stops available for purchase at The Farm. They are made out of aluminum and can be set up either regular or goofy. The curved piece can be mounted in 1 of 10 possible location to fine tune the fit and stance. I have made a few other designs but these fit nicely to your shoe and help set the angle of your front foot. If you buy them at the Farm you will save shipping and handling. $20 US
