While not technically a race wheel, though it has served very well as one, Bennett's Super Gator, which I believe came out in '77 or '78, was preconed with what they dubbed the Taper Tread.

Shadow, I called K.M. on that on Slalomskateboarder (well kinda, in jest an' all), 'cause two of my 'junior' racers were asking for me to lathe in 'pre-coned' wheels (good thinking actually, as "new" wheels are Fast, not so grippy, but worked in wheels are grippy, not as fast. Oh, and I'm a machinist, although I've got no 'decent' or recent tooling at home) ... Now, what's occurred has been a spate of riders showing up with 'milled' wheels, some are fast, some are of average urethane, some even grip a little-bit better. IMHO, either harder-than-you thought-would-work Grippens, "just-Right" worn-in Zags, or trimmed + broken-in Avalon/HotSpots just might, maybe, be as fast as re-cut Flashbacks (IE, PSR Slashbacks) with an angled-cut, trimmed lip, and recessed-curvature-cut back. But, since I can't get Flashbacks in a Reflex formula, I'll never know just how fast a re-shaped wheel might be... ;-D
Luckily, I live so close to Canada that even The Shadow can't find my enclave of secret weapons. Even the DIA and NSA are out of the loop (Hey, I don't use cell phones,'cause they snatch that stuff right outa the ether, then use it in court!). Far underground, that's where my snowcave/chem-lab/tooling room is at. Oh, and I do indeed know 'what Evil lurks', ask CMC! 8-)

Coned Wheels Conspiracy Theory

OK, So read up or be left behind:
This is just a big plot by Kenny Mollica and Jason Mitchell. Think about it, they always know that everyone's eyes are on them and what they are doing equipment-wise, then when the final rounds come down, BAM, they switch to something different that they know will work best/fastest and everyone else will be stuck using what those 2 quite deviously convinced everyone else to ride but now don't have time to change.
Also, notice how they both ride for PocketPistol and ride ZigZags sometimes? Look at who's making the pre-coned wheels! As soon as they have everyone else buying and riding preconed wheels, Mitchell and Mollica will be laughing and riding brand new unconed wheels. Carrasco is in on it too, I just haven't quite worked out all the angle yet, but he's always suspect.
Think about it, I've done my homework on this. Trust me or get burned by them again at the next race. - S

Having had to travel a lot with my skate gear over the last 30 odd years, the Decent Hardware luggage has been the easiest to use and has been the most functional that I have come across to date.prior to that I was lovin'my hard golf case, but everything just swished around inside plus it was even heavy when it was empty. Just my 2 cents...

other people were involved in that discussion,go bother them ,donny. Curiosity ,interest, why are you so determined in setting forth the idea that there needs to some profound reason for discussing who did what first, and yeah it may hurt one of the "manufacturers" the one that copied, what's wrong with that? most of the time it's not feasable to persue something like that in a court room, the little world that slalom is ,kind of limits ones spending on lawyers and such,so why shouldn't it just be hashed out here who's original and who's not. Also i think you place to much importance on what's posted here ,as if i'm gonna kill abec's business by determining they copied something (or vise versa),your post also proves you're once again an absolutely humorless web facist ,these pages are to be used for you and by you and the way you want them to be used,or feel the wrath of donny 20 furer of the slalom world. ALso good to see you're typing faster ,i see several typo's and dropped letters, though i'm not gonna acuse you of spilling your amphetamines on your keyboard.

in all your posts you are only guessing around as to where some product is made or when it has been invented to say so. bottom line is,you are no industry insider and you know nothing, just some random guessing. and for what reason? to stir things a bit? or to let people think you are so clever? your essays are in most cases absolutely useles and as a matter of fact also clueless. there is nothing to gain in asking who did what first regarding the coned wheels. you would probably only harm the biz of one of the manufacturers involved with your oh so intelligent remarks.
sad to say that you never managed to bring a single product to the market and that all your activities are based on commenting on other peoples products. in most cases not even with a profund knowledge.

what was so senseless? maybe you didn't understand,i'll explain. See it seems as though two companies are introducing very similar wheels, and the question was ,"who was first, and was it matter of copying or simultanious invention. I deduced that since a magazine ad needs to be arranged and sent in and may take a few months to actually appear in print, chris(abec 11) was first. Then someone else ,more inside the industry posted that a long while ago he'd seen prints and plans by some people named mitch and chicken,so that put themback in as the innovators. I humourously commented that i've been coning my wheels like that for years, let me further explain,i did not mean to take credit for the invention,i don't cut an accurate cone in my wheels,it's just the act of riding that can make your wheels into this shape, and it's always been considered as something to avoid. I hope i've cleared things up ,chill.

The Gecko has landed!

On 2/7/2008
Gecko Press Office
wrote in from
(78.86.nnn.nnn)
Gecko's first release from their new “Superlight Series” is the Slalom Limited Edition (The Gecko S.L.E.). The board was publicly previewed in its pre-production form at the Cadwell Race in the UK in early February with its sub-zero temps where it was incredibly well received, many calling it 'the best-looking slalom board they had ever seen' and 'potentially the board of 2008'. The comments we received by those who rode the Demo boards the following day were nothing but complementary, the majority of them resulting in firm orders.
It will officially be launched in its production version at the World Indoor Champs in Gothenburg, Sweden on the 24th February 2008 where it will also be available for demo and purchase. The shape comes via Martin Drayton's Turner Eurofighter design and a custom built by RoeRacing for him on which he won the 2005 World Champs Amateur Tight Slalom event. He also called on inspiration from Richy Carrasco, Paul Price and J-Lo (for the wide rear-end!). Design elements of the Gecko Street Slalom model ridden in the successful Guinness World Record 50 cone attempt were also used. Dimensions: 30" long, 8.75" at the widest part, 7.75" at the waist and a nice fat 8" at the tail. The board is drilled at 18 & 19" wheelbases to suit Pro and Amateur courses on both sides of the Atlantic however challenging they may be. The board weighs in at around the 600 gram mark, its light weight making it super manoeverable. It is an extremely strong board despite this and is built to be ridden by slalomers up to the 240lb mark. Wheel clearance is not a problem either with the generous wheel wells. It has awesome acceleration in part due to its torsional stiffness, which is in turn due to a special feature that we are not prepared to divulge at this time. After years of very expensive R&D in the Carbon Fibre Industry we don't want to make it too easy for our competitors. Both these features make the board very responsive . This is a by-product of the nose shape too, resulting in a deck that is lively without feeling tippy when mounted with a normal slalom-width truck. Fuller nose shaping can result in a board that is noticeably wider than your track width (measurement of trucks plus wheels) which in turn means that you can 'overpower' the truck even to the point where the unweighted wheel leaves the ground – test this with your own set-up statically. This can normally be rectified by using spacers and widening the track, or by moving the front foot rearwards, but then you lose board agility. The body of the board is waisted removing unnecessary width , and therefore weight, whilst allowing you to get closer to the cones for a more precise and faster line through the course. We believe Gecko are also the only manufacturer currently to use nylon inserts in all of the truck holes (I think Turner were the first with their Hybrid mass-produced model). These inserts mean that you can mount the trucks onto the deck without the need for pressure distribution washers and crank them down getting your hardware flush without fear of damaging the carbon. Also damage from water ingress can be completely avoided. And such is our attention to detail that we even supply two holes, with inserts, for the mounting of a single point toe block (for reg or goofy) or for a TNR foot stop. The tail is generous, and is wide enough to suit a variety of styles and foot sizes and gives you the ability to apply plenty of down force over that all important rear truck. Looking more closely at the rear end, you will notice one of the innovations that we could not hide under the MD SLE's sleek carbon fibre skin – the built-in tail wedge. Several individuals have pioneered this feature on home-made decks or as add-ons, notably Jonathan Harms/Paul Graf in the US and the UK's Mick Reiss, but up until now, no-one had done this on a production board. A simple idea beautifully executed. Quality and performance of this level unfortunately does not come cheaply. The decks will retail for: -$260 in the US, -175 Euros plus VAT = 206 Euros, -130 Pounds Sterling plus VAT = 152.75 pounds or -1,912 Swaziland Emalangeni! Basically if you are outside of the EU or have a VAT-registered business you are exempt from the nuisance tax! This represents great value for an outstanding deck that we feel has set a new benchmark in finish, features and performance, many of those who saw the deck at Cadwell thought that they were being sold too cheaply for what they are. Unfortunately for Jeff at Gecko, they are, but that's his choice. This board is NOT a mass produced commodity, but a Limited Edition board of incredible quality and several unique features.
