new wheels for eddie
On 4/20/2006 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

I have some experience with both the Powell Bowl Bombers in PF and also the 65mm No Skoolz in 96a. From what I recall, the Bowl Bombers have a bit more slip while the No Skoolz have a bit more grip. Also, the Bowl Bombers tend to be a little bit faster. The No Skoolz are a lot wider, so they're harder to get grinds with. If you're going to use them as slider wheels, I'd personally recommend the Bowl Bombers, since they have less traction in general. But it does come down to personal preference. If you're one of those people that doesn't like slippery wheels in parks, you might like the extra traction provided by the No Skoolz. And, for some people (like me), it actually feels better to have to push a slightly gripper wheel through a slide than to have to hold on while a super-slick wheel almost gets away from you in a slide.

So, it really comes down to this: Do you want a narrower faster slip, or a wider not-quite-as-fast grip? Either one could be preferable, depending on what you like in a wheel.

The Pink S-O's and SS aren't poured in the Reflex formula. Good wheels nonetheless.

nick's wheels and pinks
On 4/17/2006 Paul Steuri wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

Nick, I would go with 78a gumballs, But if you wanted something grippier go with the 75a, and if you can get some, pink gumballs would be best. I'm pretty sure that zigzags are good for pumping, but I have never tried them, i have just heard.
Also does anyone know if pink sicksicks or seven-o's are in a reflex formula?

what abec 11
On 4/14/2006 nick wrote in from United States  (71.102.nnn.nnn)

i'm looking for some wheels. i just cruise and do some downhill, no sliding. its mostly nice roads like 40% of the time. other times its ok to bad roads. i wanna get some abec cause they seem to be the best. haven't tried them and i'm broke. so, do i get some 70 zigzag or 76-70 gumball? which durometer? and for my friends board, is the zigzag good for pumping? thanks guys.

so then
On 4/12/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

if i own all those wheels but prefer to sell them, i guess i'm the wheel pimp.theoretically for a particular roughness of asphalt there is one particular hardness of urithane that is the fastest, this is perhaps complicated by the fact that resilience is a seperate function, though it seems to be related to hardness worse the relationship is not necessarily linear. If you used a skatecar,in a tunnel,on a straight street and ran a particular hill over and over again on different hardnesses of the same wheel ,one hardness would be the fastest. By how much?, and would you notice? How about using a test like this to set a real speed record. The ramps danny way uses for his record setting jumps generate speeds in the 40's (so they say) how much bigger would a ramp have to be to generate speeds in the 60's,70's .... There seems to be money out there to build bobsled tracks, how about a similar track that would be skatable. How long until we have "skatercross" which would be (snow)boardercross on some sort of rollable surface.

75a
On 4/11/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

my 75a's were the old grey/smokey flywheels with the bigger cores,i'm not nearly the wheel whore that some people are,i stopped sliding for s#@!s and giggles(well every now and then) actually i own a lot of those abec wheels but i tend to leave them in the counter, prefering to sell them. I can generally read, observe, and come up with conclusions about what products will work for me. Wheels, bearings and griptape are about the only things i buy, oh yeah powell hardcore bushings too.

re: 81a
On 4/10/2006 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (172.190.nnn.nnn)

For a long time now, I've felt like 81a is the best "soft" duro for the green wheels. I've had 81a Grippins, Flywheels, Flashbacks, and No Skoolz and none of them have felt "hard" or chattery at all. Just smooth, fast, and grippy without being gushy or prone to damage. And I ride fairly rough terrain. Oh, and just to qualify my statement, I've had most of those wheels in 78a and 75a as well. The 78's are good, but I was never really a fan of the 75's. A bit too soft for my taste I guess. Get the 81's, you won't be dissapointed.

81a
On 4/9/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

i used to swear by 75a as the fastest, then i tried the 78a's it's sort of a qualifyed plus, they seem sort of "crisp" in their accelleration and speed, i ran a mix for a bit, too. 78a fronts and 75a in the back, front wheels have more weight on them so they seem to get better traction, the 75a's in the back sort of stick real good with less weight on them. Normally you would expect a softer wheel to grip better ,no ifs ,ands or buts. There are "buts" though, if the core is not so big(like a gumball) and your weight is high enough to flex the wheel laterally(side to side) the contact surface starts to do weird things when the wheel deforms,it doesn't increase. So now youve got two identical wheels with different footprints, you've got a smaller footprint of 75a competing with a bigger footprint of 78a. My shift to 78a also involve a shift from flywheels to gumballs, 81a is a "next step" and it's an interesting thought , will the 81a be crispier, even more resistant to deformation, therefore even a bit faster. OR does it cross the line and start to chatter on the less than perfect streets i ride on ,does it pick up on to much of the road vibration, and get stuck on the grain of the local asphalt. Maybe the 81a would be better formula in a 76mm gripin,a wheel that doesn't yet exist. On a glassy grippy new street 81a would rip, and depending on your weight and exactly how smooth your streets are 83a and perhaps even harder also has potential.

Gummies in Reflex
On 4/7/2006 Steven King wrote in from United States  (71.134.nnn.nnn)

Chris,

If you come to Hood with Gumballs in anything other and 77A, and you don't share, we'll just ban them! So there. Damn, it's good to be Race Director.

You know I'm kidding you. We hope you make it this year - the 100 cone GS course will get you stoked AND kill your quads at the same time. Bring the six wheeler, we have a special prize in store for the six wheelers!

PINK GUMMIES ROCK!!!
On 4/7/2006 Erin wrote in from Canada  (66.183.nnn.nnn)

Answering my own question, lol, the pink reflex Gumballs just plain ROCK!

Wow'sa I took 'em out yesterday on my most favourite 20 km forest no-car route. I know these big hills well from years of skating 'em. I know how they feel to bomb and how they feel to carve. And I know this, the new reflex gummies turned that route into a whole new ride! Fast and at the same time grippy. A grip that wasn't mushy and didn't slow things down. Chappy - how does he do it?!

What was I skating? A Landy DH wood/cf proto deck with loose R2's and green stims. And what wheels did I usually skate on this route? Either 83mm 74a Flywheels or 78a (classic) gumballs. Don't get me wrong, those classic ABEC 11 wheels are by no means dogs on this rolling fast smooth pavement road. No, not at all. All the same, the new reflex gummies just kind of took things to another level. ....hummm, maybe the magic was in the 'pink'.....gotta think about that one...
