only use sector 9 wheels otherwise they will melt your bearings, duh

Wheels are pretty much standardized. You should be able to use pretty much any wheel. If you put on taller wheels, you might want to add risers to prevent wheelbite.

If you want to stick with Abec11 Flys, get the 75a duro. You may have been using a wheel with a harder duro, and that will cause you to slide. 75a is a good alternitave. I still havent heard or seen Hawgs too much yet (doesnt mean they aint good), so I cant say anything about them. I use 83mm 75a duro flys on a luge. the larger 97mm wheel will give you a slight top end over the 83's, but the 83's will accelerate a little quicker too. PSR knows more about the whole centerset/sideset thing. Abec11 flys come in different sizes/duro's that should accomidate what you need. How are those Hawgs compared to Abec's? Are they faster, different formula? I always wanted the Exkate M80's too, but it's a toss up

Ryan you might want to look closely at the biggest Seismic Speed Vent if you want that kind of size and more grip. The smaller Flywheels will lose some speed, but may not grip as much as you'd like? Being center-set with the bearings and having the radiused profile, they're expected to provide controlled drifting in turns. The Speed Vents are more like an oversized Slalom wheel, with a lip that provides more grip (which means trickier breakaways when/if they lose traction!) and the bearings are not centerset (not easily reversed for evening out wear), so they'll cone a bit once they're worn in (coning a little actually Increases traction a bit). The Speed Vents are also available in really soft durometers, which'll give more grip, and the smaller core will help plush out the ride on rougher surfaces. If you're still looking at Flywheels, maybe softer will give you the grip you want? Look also at the tread depth in relation to the core size. Smaller core size will increase traction a bit too. One other possibility might be the Pink Gumballs (78A in Reflex Formula). I love Gumballs for their speed, and for the decent grip, but still they can be slid if pushed. They aren't as fast as Flywheels in a straight line (heck, even Roadie Racers can keep up on smoother tar), but they are predictable, and with the small core, pretty plush in ride quality. The pink Reflex Formulas are stickier yet, though maybe only as sticky as Speed Vents.

I'm trying to decide what kind of abec 11's to get; what is the advantages and disadvantages of such large wheels? i've ridden my friend's dh board with the 97mm, very fast board, but it slips out and looses traction very easily around turns. Would I be able to maintain the same speeds with 85mms or 90mms as the 97s, but maybe have better control around tight corners?

Faster

The answer is...'it depends'.
On rough surfaces a softer wheel can be faster, but with the different qualitys of improved 'thane these days you can sometimes find a softer wheel is faster on some smooth surfaces than a harder one. The Red Avilla and soft Gumballs are examples where I feel they can be faster if you go soft. But....'it depends'. Temperature of the road surface can make a difference too.
BUT....it is a big generalisation. Some makes of wheels are faster than others. To say a softer wheel WILL be slower isnt always the case.
There you go...a totally non commital answer thats of no real use I suspect!

Yeah I know herbn, about wheels not being the only deciding factor as far as placing goes, I just thought saying what place they came in would be something to say as I can imagine some one posting "well what were the places attached to the users" and yeah the race did have turns in it. just to try for saving some grace can I say they had extremely similar lines.
Oh, by the way the Amber 72a Flywheels you sold me right before I took off to go to bainbridge are still in good use and being well worth every penny. You could check out some photos of my crash at kkphoto.net under bainbridge 06.
seeya later.

Hey..would this be a good setup for dh? Landy Evo, grizzlys with flipped hanger, speedvents 77mm 83a front, speedvents 79a rear.
Or would you suggest 83mm all the way? As the evo turn more like a car, I would think the 83/79a combo would be better than a 83 or 79 all over?
What do you think?
thanks, m

what about first and second. At a certain point ,equipment is not the determining factor in winning a race, not saying the guy in second would still be in second if he was using roadrider 4's but did this race have turns, just being on a set of wheels you're familiar with can give you the edge, chances are fairly good if third and forth had traded wheels at the starting line neither would be in the top five.

Fly wheels versus speed vents! that would be a fight to watch.
at bainbrigde this year Lindström took fourth in time trials on 83mm fly wheels at the same race Olle van keppel took second on a pair if speed vents (but it looked like they were 77mm)

C-62 spacers

John, C-62's do take a 10mm spacer. However, even in 'race' wheels of the day, you'd see a bit of variance in the core's bearing seats, and the buffer between. If you're super-picky about this, measure those buffer flanges inside the wheel, and then take 10mm spacers and mill off the few thous they're off by.

Kryp C-62 bearing spacers???

What size spacers are needed for Kryp C-62s? I put 10mm in them and they have a slight bit of play, not 2mm of play... so it seems that going down to 8mm would be incorrect as well. I thought about getting out the file but thought I would ask first. Thanks in advance!
