Pleasure Tool Bearings
On 11/1/2001 Steven King wrote in from (205.156.nnn.nnn)

I just received sets of Pleasure Tools ABEC-7 bearings, both shielded and sealed. Replaced the Bones Swiss bearings on my GS setup with the PT Sealed bearings.

Initial impressions:
- Kerstin was wondering about the plain brown envelope from "Pleasure Tools"
- Very quite
- Fast (spin by hand for approx 30 seconds - a sealed bearing!)
- Sealed bearings a nice green color, to match the ABEC-11 wheels
- Shielded bearings a funky orange color, to look fast on race day
- Seems like a quality product
- The price and value is GREAT

1 hour's worth of riding impressions:
- Quite
- Fast
- This is a quality product and a great value

My plan is to use Bones Swiss and/or PT shielded bearings for racing only -- tired of cleaning the Bones and the noise they make when dirty.

Time will tell how well the PTs age. From the reviews we've seen it should be a good long time.

I give them a two wristguard rating!

Attila,
PT's web page is www.edsbearings.com, but it is having trouble loading this morning for some reason. I have phone numbers and email addresses at home. I can get that contact information to you later this afternoon. Keep trying that webpage til then, maybe it will come around.

I just purchased sets of the ABEC 5 & 7's in both sealed and shilded versions, and they all used metal retainers. Don't know about the ceramics.

Insinuations of impropriety? All I want to know is what kind of retainers the PT bearings use.

PCB,
The retainers in my 7 Sealed Pleasure Tools are steel. The ceramic shielded are plastic.

Maybe Ed is on vacation? Maybe his (or your) email isn't working? Be careful making insinuations of impropriety when you really have no justification.

I've done several transactions with Pleasure Tool and their service and products have been first rate, as my reviews here have stated.

I emailed Edsbearings a couple of days ago, asking them what kind of retainer the PT bearings use, but got no response. Are there any obvious reasons why Eds would be afraid to answer my question?

I would give the Pleasure Tools a shot. Ed's a great guy and he ships his bearings out fast. You can't beat the price. The ABEC 7 Sealed versions are running great on my slalom setups. I'll have a few spare sets at La Costa. Look me up if you want to give them a try.

Abec ratings
On 10/30/2001 Herbn wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Besides dealing with some aspects that may be irrelevent to many skaters,Abec ratings do seem to apply,of course in skating there sometimes seem to be misrepresntations because one companies Abec 7 doesn't go as fast as someone elses. Abec is not a straight speed rating,i've heard quiet running is actually a pretty big consideration,it measures the quality of the finnish of the rolling surfaces,my dad fixed movie cameras and bearings were spec'd at abec 7 and replaced when they got loud, skatebearings ironicly seem at there fastest/best just when they start to get loud, not a chunky gritty loud, but a fast spinning metallic loud.I've had a theory that a Abec X plastic retainer bearing can be sloppier than a metal cage bearing because the plastic cage muffles the noise.

the best
On 10/29/2001 attila wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

I've been trying several different brands as of late, including speed freaks which seem fast but don't last too long.

I keep coming back to swiss for speed and consistency. They also seem to be maintenance friendly (occasional wd-40/speed grease job).

I wonder, what is the fastest bearing money can buy???

ABEC ratings
On 10/29/2001 Dave T wrote in from (212.2.nnn.nnn)

FC, The ABEC ratings aren't all that applicable to skate bearings being more an industry measurement for bearings used in machinery. I have used many different bearings and have found even in the case of the same bearing manufacturer
that say an ABEC 3 has been as good or better than an ABEC 5, although slight. I find it hard telling the difference between ABEC ratings, rather different brands are easier to distinguish. Good cheap bearings ? well china bones and cheaper FKD bearings seem fine, and although I haven't used them pleasure tool bearings are getting good reviews here too, I'd certainly keep clear of the clear/green shield speed demon bearings, total crap as far as bearings go in my humble opinion.

lubing bearings
On 10/28/2001 ron wrote in from (64.252.nnn.nnn)

well ryan,
first you need to get the sheild off now if you have sealed bearings you need to get a pin and just pop the sheild off. if you have regular bearings you need to find a liitle clip shaped like a "C" inside the rim of the bearing and take it out and the sheild should just fall out. there are many differnt oils that you could use. make sure it is specifically made for bearings(dont use wd-40) perosnally I like the speed cream from bones but use whatever floats your boat

Herbn,
Check out Adam's and others' numerous testimonials and the edsbearigs.com website itself. Bearings are cheap and apparently reliable. I've written to ed about shipping to Japan and it is better than reasonable, and I'll be ordering soon. Sory to be so long Ed, if you're reading this. Anyway, check it out, the sound like good value. Adam's even tone speaks volumes...

Never heard of them, are they off some internet longboard mailorder ?their seem to be a ton of bearing "companies",mostly just packed and or labled generics. ABEC 7, if it's the same bearing as; lets say,a World Industry Grenade which is also supposed to be ABEC 7 i wouldn't doubt that they might be only a little faster than a GMN abec 1 or a Ninja abec 1,or even a better generic ABEC 1

I'm surprised there was even a difference at all.
ABEC? I'd never heard of it until rollerblade salesmen started appearing.
NMB, GMN, Bones Swiss, that was the only rating system we used.

ABEC "brand"
On 10/23/2001 Herbn wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

i'm not sure, does a begginer need a slow bearing?,a cheap bearing? what's in a number anyway? the cheap abec 3's that i sell on completes to kids parents who won't go the few extra bucks for chinabones(most will)are quite crappy and i've seen worse, world industries abec 5 "shotgun shells" are just about as bad, probabely the same. Ninja ABEC 3's rock! really fast not much different from their 5's,in a good way.

Oils
On 10/22/2001 sloth wrote in from (24.129.nnn.nnn)

Never use WD-40 or any other synthetic ouils if you are in, nnear around, or withen 40 miles of sand. It gathers on the synthetic oils cauing buildup and gunk and will damage your races and bearings themselves. Best thing to do is find a medium quality pure oil. (I use paintball gun oil) It not only lasts much much longer it runs smoother and decreases buildup by marginal amounts
