Been riding Rockets steel since they came out (2003 before Rockets name) and their ceramics since 2004. Their steel bearings work fine with 2-3 drops per bearing case. Their ceramics will perform the best with only 1 drop per case. It's even safe to run them dry, if need be. Because the ceramic balls that Rocket uses are harder than even metal, so you cannot hurt or damage them. They sell Rocket Propellant. The Powell Speed Cream works well, too. If you see that any of your seals are concaved in and are touching the bearings, replace them. Keep you bearings clean and lubed and Rockets will last you for many years.
Simply put, the best and fastest skateboard bearings made for the money. They're 3even faster than bearings priced way higher. I've tried just about every bearing available for skateboards and I feel that Rockets offer the best product and even better; outstanding customer service. Sorry to sound like an ad, but ask anyone else that skates Rockets. Don't take my word for it.
Cheers!

if you want them to be fast don't put any lube in em. ceramic don't really need lube at all because they don't expand nearly as much as steel with friction, which is how they cease and blowout. You will however need something there to prevent the steel inner and outer races (ball contact area)from rusting up. one very small drop is all you need. the rest of the bearing may get some surface rust but its only the race area you gotta protect. excess lube will slow you down alot. ever notice how brand new bearings are a lil slower at start then get quicker with use.

I'm not sure what else a bearing should feel after cleaning, if not "dry". Anyways, Bones Speed Cream is a good lube and widely available, as is Rocket Propellant (that you can order from california bearing and some online skateshops).

Hey,
Has any one got a suggestion for a general lubricant for ceramics? They spin very freely however, are suddenly prone to feeling dry post cleaning.
Big thanks.

it doesn't matter. please read some of this forum or other skate forums and you'll find info about the unsuitability of abec as a rating for how well bearings will be for skateboards.

what price do you have in mind?
$10 or less: pleasure tools (china) ~$15: bones reds (china) ~$25: rocket steel (nmb singapore/california bearing) ~$45: bones swiss super six (wis) ~$75: rocket ceramics (nmb singapore/california bearing)
Bearings by Ninja (japan), Oust (?china?), and Biltin (china) should also factor in there somewhere but the above are my choices.

sinsystem make 10mm id bearings in steel and ceramic. I got my mate to get me a set while he was in the US. Highly recommend them. Good price. Gravity makes em go better so outer space would be out of the question.

military stuff, things made for the military has a reputation for being absurdly priced,if some product is tested post production, specially handled or whatever, the price can get crazy.Space shuttle bearing don't necessarily make your skateboard roll down the road any faster.

has been done already, reflex and somebody else too,i think ousts are angular contact. Lots of things cost more in one store than others, not necessarily making them better, i'll sell you a set of abec 7's for 300 dollars but i already blew it,you won't believe they're better, cause i'm a skateboard shop.

"go to championbearing.com this guy named Richard Kay hates skateboarding"
yeah, right. I'll give him a miss then.
In my view the only bearngs that matter are ones that work for our application. If you are reccomended say, Oust, Biltins, Rockets, Pleasure Tools, Bones etc and you find they work well for you then brilliant. Two of the above dont corrspond to any Abec Rating yet are rated by racers as being extremely good. What most slalomers dont do is pay through the nose for fancy packed mainstream marketing type bearings geared to the street side of skating.

300 for a real set of Abec 7? That not true. Check out SKF or NTN. They build bearings that are buitlt to tighter tolerances Abec can rate. Its true that a lot of bearings in the market are not what they should be. A german skater magazine mesuared and tested a lot of bearings and most were one or even two ratings below what they claimed to be. Besides, the Abec rating has nothing to do with the performance of the bearing. An real Abec 7 can be crap, if it is made of bad steel. And made of good steel, a bearing without any Abec rating can outperform the others. Want to know more: search for "bearingwars" and "NTN Ball_Bearings.pdf".

I work for a bearing distributor selling bearings the size of a pin head to bearings you can physically walk through. Just to put it out there - the ABEC is precision in the bearing world - the chinese stuff you buy is not even standard to industrial use. Barden makes a 608-2z that has a precision of P4 - P4 means abec 7- this bearing by itself would cost you at applied technologies, kaman or motion industries approx $35 + - so it would cost you close to $300 for REAL abec 7's
I love skating- skate everyday- it just cracks me up that you are being misled. If you don't believe me- go to a bearing store besides your skateshop who don't know their head from their you know what- I am working with a truck company developing some skateboard truck bearings- taller O.D. rather than the 8mm we have now, using a possible angular contact bearing with a 40 degree radial load and the rest is thrust, which is really minimal you need for skating- bearing shaft o.d. will be 10 mm - the bearing call out will be a 7000BTCG. Peace out guys- I have literally thoooousands of 608's for sale- hit me up if you want to buy a hundred or more at one time- and one more note- if you want a real quality bearing- go to championbearing.com this guy named Richard Kay hates skateboarding but builds a bad ass bearing- he went to M.I.T. he has bearings in the space shuttle and on mars... no s#@!.
Peace

after the trial and error of making my own and vast searching for a supplier, I finally have a set of aluminium sleeves for my 688 ceramic bearings. Found a shop over the net and just ordered them in. Ninja replacements. Even though the bearings were brand new I removed the shields to check the balls were really ceramic then washed all the lube out. Most new bearings are drenched in the crap hence the break in period. Rinsed them out in filtered alcohol then after they dried put some lube back on for the steel races. I used a pin dipped in the lube for what would have been less than a 1/4 of a drop for each bearing. Stuff all. Run em dry and feel em fly! I wouldn't go doing it on your fave steelies though unless you got the cash to replace em frequently. Gonna swap em with my current fave, super 6's with ceramic balls, and see if the ball size and weight makes any difference.
