Hey buddy,
You should check out costa mesa when in town, free, outdoors, and lit til nine (unlike myself, ywho is usually lit after nine, but that is a different topic). Not far from LB, or at least no farther than Vans is.

Buddy, I live very close to Long Beach... post up and/or e-mail if you're in town. My boys and I are going out to skate tonight and I skate every night, after work, at the local skateparks. Take care and have a safe/fun trip.

Brain damage affects EVERYONE, not just the brain injured. I know this better than most from personal experience.....Piss off a grom by making him wear a helmet. Piss off a bud by making a smart-ass comment if he forgets to wear his helmet like I did on Sunday(thanks marty & ron)....Helmets only suck. Brain injury DEVASTATES....just wear your damn helmet.

Helmet
On 10/26/2005 Greta wrote in from United States  (206.173.nnn.nnn)

The reality of what can happen to you if you don't wear a properly fitting helmet is documented with at least one fatality a year reported on NCDSA. Dr Dave on his msg board has also covered what kind of life you might have should you survive a good wallop on the noggin. (tubes in every orifice, anyone?)

Here's another reason: head injuries are a possible cause/precursor for Alzheimers Disease. If you have ever known anyone who has it, you know what a crappy way it is to go.

Rosa Parks didn't have to get up from that bus seat and you can't make people wear helmets.

Those alive know, the dead don't.

On 10/25/2005 Adam wrote in from United States  (198.144.nnn.nnn)

Scary? Hardly. Predictable? Surely.

With dangling chin strap role model Tony Hawk in full effect, it's not wonder I rarely see a properly affixed chin strap on a skateboarding kid these days. No helmet seems to be most common; helmet with unattached chin strap next; helmet with Tony Hawk style chin strap next; and properly affixed chin strap dead last (usually seen on adult skaters and kids with parents present).

How do we change this disturbing and dangerous situation?? Ncdsa.com's "No Helmet?" campaign is our small contribution. What's yours??

trip to long beach CA
On 10/23/2005 buddy rawls wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

I got me a trip to LB for a couple of days. I am trying to line up a decent evening (on one or two of the nights after 5:00) of skating. I like dedicated bowls and pools, as opposed to big collision flow areas. i am zeroing in on the santa monica park (I really would like to hit it), which appears to be not too far north of LB on the 405. But i am not sure of the traffic flow and hours for the freeways. Or I could just hit the Vans park, which is my normal routine. I also looked at the bell gardens kidney (but it may be a little shallow), but apparently I have to register at another location to skate. or the anaheim park if it gets some good props.
Any ideas or alternatives that would make for a good session in the 6-8 time frame on the weekdays, sufficiently close to LB?

Phil
On 10/22/2005 cabbaGe wrote in from United States  (68.34.nnn.nnn)

Full name is Phil O'Donnell and he was born on July 26, 1971. Here's more update info for everyone.

That is correct and here are some more details...

The reception at the 9:30 club will be from 2pm to 4pm and the club is located at 915 V St. N.W. Washington DC. Their phone number is 202.265.0930 but please do not flood them with calls as they will be busy with their standard day to day operations.

We will have announcement sheets at the service for everyone.

We are also planning a Sunday morning session at the Arlington, VA skatepark starting at 8am. It will be a gathering of friends and family to pay tribute to our fallen friend. Phil and Puck's parents want to experience a little part of the friendship we all shared in the wee hours of the morning. Everyone is welcome to this event.
Also, I am contacting this local restaurant (Sign of the Whale). We had a tradition of skating Sat. and Sun. at 8am and we would go from there (at 11am) to this restaurant to hang out and eat. I will make arrangements so if we're rained out we can go and meet there. I'm working on it right now.

Finally, as many of you know, the family has requested that in lew of flowers, anyone interested in making contributions for the family should make donations to the Skatepark of Baltimore in Mr. Phil's name. Here's the info on what to do...

Please make all checks payable to:
Skatepark of Baltimore
and send them to:
State of Confusion
c/o SoB
8222 Pulaski Hwy.
Rosedale, MD 21237

In the body of the check (bottom left corner in the "FOR" section) you can write:
Mr. Phil Fund

RIP Phil

Sad to hear!

John sorry to hear about Dr. Phil's early departure. Maybe you could have a future park or an existing park piece named after him.

It's something even the community leaders would agreeet too! It would also act as an education for some of the young skaters out there that need some of the help that for responsibility that skating and scociety dosen't provide.

All the best from up North! I just finished The Tavis Huffman Memorial ramp in our sk8park. He was a young rider that was killed just over two years ago crossing canada on his Bike (not motorbike) and was hit from behind by an 18 wheeler and killed. We ran our 2nd annual Tavis Huffman event in August this past summer and are starting a memmorial funds towards scholarchips or something like that.

Mr Phil
On 10/21/2005 Adam wrote in from United States  (198.144.nnn.nnn)

Hit-from-behind accidents are quite rare in the world of motorcycling. They`re scary because there is little in the way of defensive driving that the MC operator can do to prevent them apart from trying to be as visible as possible. Cagers, please be careful out there.. motorcycle sales are reaching all-time highs and riders` safety requires a new awareness from car and truck drivers.

Our hearts at Ncdsa.com go out to Mr. Phil`s family and friends.

8am-Noon,10/23/05 Memorial Arlington,VA Skate Park Session for....
On 10/20/2005 John Dillon,TeamFun wrote in from United States  (67.142.nnn.nnn)

Phil O'Donnel aka Mr. Phil, whose life was cut short by a negligent SUV driver on Tuesday. Phil was hit from behind while riding his motorcycle....and he was wearing his helmet, by the way. I just skated with him this past Sunday at Arlington, Va Skate Park, where Phil was a local....and he was practically always there when I showed up for the early morning Sunday sessions. This past Sunday Phil was tearing it up...he told me his ankle was feeling strong and he was getting vocal grinds on the pool coping in the big bowl that could be heard from the parking lot.....when he rolled out of the bowl he would catch some backside lappers on the metal coping beside the extension then go rule the spine. Phil broke a board just kick-turning on the trannies on his first or second run and he had to go back home to get another board. He was a big guy who often wore double-capped Pro-Designed knee pads. He sported the shiny-headed, bald look under his helmet.............Phil always padded up....he was an inspiration to many skaters and he was a supporter of Skatepark of Baltimore quest in getting Baltimore some new roundwall. This weekend, please pause for a moment for this skater who will be missed by many and whose life was cut short by a momentary lapse of attention by an errant driver. Life is short. Peace! Here's the info as I know it for the viewing and funeral:

Viewing: Friday 10/21/05 6-8pm at DeVol Funeral Home
2222 Wisconsin Ave
Washington,DC NW
(this is 6 blocks south of Mass Ave & Wisconsin Ave)

Funeral: Saturday 10/22/05 Noon at St Anne's Church
4001 Yuma St
Washington,DC NW
(this is 1 block south of the Tenleytown Metro Station)
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to SkateparkofBaltimore...more info will be found at the viewing and funeral.

HEy Dan, yeah man I've been transfering from carving and sliding to park and pool an I've been using the brad edwards, its the board I slide on so I'm pretty used to it. Work your way to the smaller boards man, I still fall off the popsicles as soon as I stand on em, my feet step where the board aint and voila, splitsville! Dont be put off, its easier than it feels/looks, you just gotta be on a board that you feel comfortable on.
