I'm gonna have a look at that area tomorrow if my ride works out. do you know of any other ditches or carvable terain in portland? the hills and mini bank by my house are getting a little old. -Ben

TIMING

i have your timing problems solved if you gots the cash. we use a great wireless timing system, accurate to the hundreth of a second for our ski and snowboard race training. regulations specify that we need to use wire timing for races, but this system works great for training and i am sure it is accurate enough for skateboarding's needs. i am sure you could adapt the starting gate from a wand starter to a slap plate, or an eye like fat city uses. a wand could work too... they don't have prices up on their website, but i have an email in to them. i used to race with the manufacturer's sons so, he might hook you guys up for me. perhaps fat city or another slalom race organizer would be willing to help invest in this timing system.
it's just a suggestion, an expensive suggestion, but nonetheless.

It's simple for timing.... Use "alligators".
One alligator, Two alligators, Three.........
It should be accurate enough.
I hope to make it out to shoot....... photos.

OUTLAW...

Let me remind you all that this is an outlaw race in the most hardcore sense of the word. It won't do us much good to have wire along the entire length of the ditch. Who stays behind to reel it up if the MAN runs us out? Or are we going to have a disposable timer system that we can just leave there? Also, nothing would attract the MAN quicker than having someone announce the starts via a loudspeaker. This has to be compact and low-key.

its all about riding the ditch and drawing the lines. The only bitching I'll be doing is if confusion and mayhem get in the way of my wheels rolling down the ditch. The signup looks rad so far. Stoked to see JoeI and AnthonyS coming out from the East. And it looks like the entire state of CO is coming.
can you ABQ guys offer any wheelbase/wheel suggestions? Would a drop-thru speedboard be appropriate?

Timers and whiners

I think that the point to make is that good timers eliminate bad whiners. We need the scoop Palmer so that everyone knows what to expect. YES, there are timing systems that can go for however long you need to go using a hard wire set up. EDI has one that goes over a mile at every race they throw, and I've STILL seen plenty of whining racers, the difference is that with a real timing system they can whine all they want, they just don't have a case. Fastest time wins.

WAHL ABQ IS ALWAYS A FUN RIDE. THERE WILL BE TIMING. I THINK WHAT GBMII WAS GETTING AT WAS LETS NOT HAVE A BUNCH OF WHINING BULLs#@! ABOUT THE WAY THE RACE IS RUN. JUST EVERYONE SHOW UP, GO AS FAST AS YOU CAN AND BE HAPPY WITH THE WAY YOU PLACED. THE ONLY PLACE THATS COUNTS IS FIRST ANYWAY SO NO USE BITCHING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 8TH AND 9TH.

Timing for the Outlaw Contest

K-Lee, I'm pretty sure we'll just do stop watches. Keepin' it simple. Whining will not be tolerated. We'll do our best to keep it fair and consistent. This is a contest for the 'core boyz. It's time to throwdown. Put up or shut up. We don't want money from the whiners. It would be fun as hell to do 4 man heats.... But the carnage would be to great.
The GPS idea sounds awesome, but would probably work better on a sanctioned event... Or one where we had more time.

Family Schmamily. Count me in. I'm just gonna tell them that I have major heart surgery that weekend and can't leave the state, or perhaps I'll just tell them the truth. They're bound to understand, aren't they? Regardless, I owe it to myself to attend the race. I wouldn't be a very good wedding guest if I just sat there pouting thinking about all the fun going on back home.
Hey Palmer, let's start talking logistics here. I was thinking, how are we going to time it? Like you said before, there isn't a timer in the world with wires long enough to cover Indian School. And I have a feeling that walkie-talkies and stopwatches will only cause people to argue over human error. The next best idea that I have is to pool together $100 or so and get a small GPS unit from Wal-Mart or something. We can put it in a heavily padded fanny pack and strap it to each racer as they take their run. Then, instead of judging on time, we could judge on either top speed or average speed. And instead of having cone penalties, we could have flags throughout the course that the racers have to grab on their way down. Each flag missed or dropped takes a half of a mile per hour off your top speed or something like that. The only other idea I have is to let everyone charge the ditch at once, and the first one to make it to the bottom alive wins. Although I don't think that Albuquerque Ambulance Service has enough ambulances to cover the possible catastrophy. Think we even need cone penalties? There's enough holes and debris as it is, but it should be more than a simple drag race. What ideas do you have brewing?

Palmer's throwing the outlaw Indian School race on March 20-21. Not only have I already made plans (weeks ago) to go out to visit with my girlfiend's grandparents the week before, but I have to be in Phoenix on the 20th for a family wedding. Don't they know? It isn't just every weekend that we have a race at Indian School. As a matter of fact, this is the first race to be held there EVER! I've been DYING to have a race there for years, and now that one is being held, I have DOUBLE previous engagements. MAN, DOES MY LIFE SUCK OR WHAT! I hope everyone has fun without me. so, i am heading to death valley in march for a school geology trip (missing palmers event =(. i get to talk about sand dunes, yea (boo). i am interested in scoping the area for skatable terrain- i.e. huge ditches or pipes in construction. we are visiting one huge pipeline that supplies california with water. there might be some leads there. other than that, we are heading from salt lake to vegas via I-15 and then heading west from there. any leads would be appreciated so we can further develop some spots. who knows, you give me a lead, i just might have another lead to give you in return when i get back. l8r sk9ers

I remember when the Beach was just being built (late '80s?) and there was a concrete bowl at the west or northwest end. I think it was kind of rectangular with a shallow and deep end? I only skated it once. Is this the one you are thinking of maybe?
