The tape from this weekend is boxed up and ready to ship. I threw in some other clips from Reading and stuff, just for S&G's. It'll go out in tomorrow's mail.

You said to not mention the shorts, though, so I'll be nice (cheap hotels have no ball-room). LOL

here's a ditch in Lake Worth FL that they tarred, but it was still skateable in some places. other areas of the ditch had tar gobbed up in blobs that made it un-rideable. we could only skate it under the cover of darkness. lights from a nearby shopping complex gave us just enough illumination. and I guess we did have "additions" to ditches even back in 1982...but they were concrete to GRIND! my friend did this "double exposure" shot...one shot of me skating with the blue filter on the flash, one of me "posing" with the red filter on the flash. and no comments on the shorts...it WAS 1982! http://www.patiomendino.com/skate/image6.html later skaters! p

*Echo Blower? you mean a noisy, exhaust spewing gas guzzling "sweeping machine"? You better be careful or the "earthy hippy" longboarders will freak out. sweep it, don't pollute! *a 15 yr. old that skates "old school"...kinda' like a white man wanting to be a Rastafarian? *I grew up more on Black Sabbath heh heh heh, all in fun... I think everyone has made their points on this one. cooperation...old guys new guys. sweep it but don't spray paint it and stuff. it only takes an hour for the roads dept. to tar a ditch. It happened to so many that I grew up riding in South FL. keep skating, keep having fun, keep it real. Now I have a major jones to go hit JR's ditch if the rain stops today. P's out

Please just love thy fellow skaters who even bother to visit and post to the site. I have to admit that I'd rather skate without the wax because really it's a mess, but to the people who ride longboards/oldschool style who have ushered in the wax from newschool/rollerblade misconceptions I still consider you a brother even though skateboarding as we know it took a turn for the worst in the 90's.(though really for the better because it showed us what we were missing. That being big boards and variety) Team Known, though I have yet to meet one are true brothers. Match didn't know he'd be whipping up such an awful stink by using the "W" word. Alright, we schooled him, now show him the love right back.

just adding to SPRINGS' message, it was an effort of locals and a couple KNOWN riders that cleaned up pot springs, not just KNOWN. We'll be there Saturday morn around 1130. Trevor, Cory, and I are looking forward to a good session. I'll bring my Echo blower and a broom. If its raining, we'll shoot for early Sunday like 830. I have been run out of there by the A-Town cops but they knew we were not spray painting or using drugs. Just asked us to leave. If people continue to do that s#@!, it will be a thing of the past. I used to skate an awesome ditch in Springfield Ohio( IH ) that they tarred. Totally made it unrideable. Some mods are cool but not the wax. Jeff McDermott

Johnny B, Jeff, Patio Mendino, K-LEE, BillyBonebreak and any one else in the Allentown area, come and get on a friendly skate session and hang out around the King’s ditch with some the new kids, myself included. We all just want to rip some ‘crete. Just because we grew up on Nirvana, little wheels, and big rails, and you guys grew up on home made boards and Led Zeppelin doesn’t mean we can’t get along! We are all long boarders it’s just we have different influences, who says we can’t learn something from one another. Who is up Friday? Like 3ish at Kings.
PS. Animal Chin is one of the sickest videos that I have ever seen. Show me your road rash! Lets rip

OK OK OK OK Take the ditch, and cut that bad boy in half. Y'all who want to put a little bit of funk into it, have at it. You's guys who want to skate it au natural, go for it.
When the cops come, bust out the netting all M*A*S*H styley and start whistling.
Really, being relatively new to this scene, I don't see harm in some weed-wacking and sweeping; possibly what you may label "non-invasive" renovations. At the same time, I need only drive a couple blocks in my hometown to see what was a great spot that became a bust when it became too big and noticable. Though I'm sad there aren't any ditches extremely close, I'm glad I don't have to deal with this dilemna.

If done on the right part of a ditch, what's wrong with adding roll-ins, parking blocks, I-beam, etc.? Over the decades I have skated ditches, I have found that most ditches need to be spiced up. For example, If there are no grindable ledges, dig out a trench about 20' along on the top so your trucks can grind. How about creating a flat area to place a 4X4 sheet of ply on the top edge of downhill low end of the ditch to get a run up the ditch.
Some ditches might be too high profile to add anything to while other ditches are open for all kinds of add-ons. Though, I'm not a fan of wax either because a harsh gind on crete is the best. Remember the brooms because, all ditches need a good cleaning.
BTW, don' worry about the Team Known guys. They are hip (they might need to stay off the wax) and best of all they are part of the future for the re-birth of ditch skating.

Hello everyone! I apologize for all that has come from my initial post. I think our intentions of cleaning up the ditch have been distorted. I understand the ditch is a fun ditch and is good the way it is. I only wanted to explore more of it. By cleaning up certain areas of it we can find elements of it we haven't seen before. We want to push some weeds back, sweep it up, maybe fix up the rotting wood, things like that. In no way do we intend to make it into a skate park. I also understand that our team is much younger than most longboard riders, so we are obviously going to have a different approach. Speaking with others, such as Mather and McKibbin, we are pretty surprised that such a reaction occurred. We are all about other opinions, we understand we are relatively new to the scene considering our youngest rider is 15 - but he rips more old school than any of us. In cleaning up the ditch we hoped to be doing a favor and would love others to help out. I think the ditch has more potential. Maybe we could all meet up and figure out what we really want to include. A team effort kind of deal. I apologize again for all of this that seems to have started because of a misunderstanding. We have nothing but respect for all of you guys that have been here far longer than us. In some respects we even look up to you, but do take into consideration that we are a new generation of longboarders, so certain things may be approached differently. I am sorry for any bad blood that may have boiled from these posts. PEACE-LOVE -MATCH-

I agree with the notion that wax has no place on ditches, or any other real skate spots for that matter. Wax is a leftover of the early '90s death of hardcore skating, and has been perpetuated by the frootbooters ever since. Real skaters can grind anything without wax, or die trying. Also, the main attraction of skating and ripping ditches, pools, banks, and other similar structures is that they WEREN'T designed for skating, yet you can still rip it. As soon as you customize it, it becomes a skatepark and the challenge of skating that which was not meant to be skated is gone. Keep the wax for your snowboard and grind those trucks to the axle! Or, if you want, get some copers or Z-rollers, just leave the wax at home! I've come pretty close to crippling myself permanently on overly-waxed skate spots. Worst of all, after skating a waxy ledge, your wheels (and shoes) get all waxy and you slam just trying to turn the board! Oh yeah, those that wax curbs just tic-tac to turn, they don't actually carve, so that must not be a problem for them. Just say no to wax!

adding rails to a ditch? what the...? I hate that all the ramps these days have steel coping. slippy slidey froot booter influenced... sliding on waxed steel is so weak. zingggg...whooppee! there's enough steel rails to slide in the parks, downtown, whatever. nothing like really GRINDING concrete. slamming the transitions and laying into a LOUD GRIND. throwing dust. using up your trucks. GRINDING. GRINDING. GRINDING. not slippy sliding on steel. see the Animal Chin video. find your roots. GRIND, bruddah, GRIND. p

My advise: It's fine the way it is. It has been ripped for many years, just like it is and doesn't need to be made "more enjoyable". It's a ditch, for cripes sake! Keep it as one. Don't turn it into a skatepark. That's the whole allure of a ditch/pool/bank. If you want to bonk off of pipes/shopping carts/picnic tables/2x4's/benches/whatever go to a skatepark.
Keep it real and keep it low key!

Hey Johnny B - I'm sure we all understand your concern about Kings ditch. But nobody wants the ditch to turn bust. These guys skate with me on Team Known and all they want to do is clean up the ditch to make it more enjoyable. While I'm sure they appreciate your advice, your tone is remarkably condescending and the implication is that if the ditch does go bust, you'd blame it on them. Hey man, this kinda stuff just happens sometimes. And if these guys want to clean up a ditch, they can't be held responsible for what other people do. Anyway, we (Team Known) have cleaned up Pot Springs ditch - it looks nice, skates even better and still hasn't gone bust. So easy, Johnny B, easy: we're all brothers by the common bond of skating (hopefully longboarding). All I'm sayin, man, is no need to get hostile. Thanks for the advice. Peace. Mather Team Known

There's no need to clean that ditch and WAX has no place around 'crete. I tellin' ya', you call too much attention to that place (building all kinds of stuff on the lips and creating all kinds of activity), it'll turn into a bust and ruin a good spot.
Just sweep out the busted glass, push some of the weeds aside and rip. Keep it the way ditches are meant to be ridden, natural.
Weeds hanging from the king pins, grass stains on the trucks, mud on the grip tape, dirt caked in the wheels. The signs of a good east coast ditch sesh!

Dude, Johnny B, Don't worry about that ditch. It’s not like we are going to turn it into a vert ramp, just giving it a good clean and wax. If you want to help your knowledge and work would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Jeff, This is Ryan, the kid from the slalom race, don’t worry bout the crete bro. We are just going to replace the chutted stuff and make that place RIP!
