Yeah Doug. There is a school on Harvard Ave in Brookline. Behind there, maybe 3 feet high. Not too bad. Skated them maybe once. Only true banks I have found so far, but I haven't been looking that hard. They are on the edge of a basketball court. Crowded with Bball players in the summer.

V-Land & Whip-n-Dip

Sadly, V-Land was destroyed (I believe in late 2001), as part of the improvememnts to the adjacent highway. I think I learned more tricks in that ditch than anywhere I ever rode. Once sessioned with Godoy twins there, never forget that. A few times, I surfed the length of the ditch, then went into a "coffin" position to pass through the small tunnel (which ran under 8 lanes of highway), and then continued down the ditch on the other side of the highway. Man, that was as close to sufing as it gets: tube time! I have a few pics of the ditch and some skaters (myself included), but these are in a box and would have to be rooted out.
Whip-n-Dip is still skated and great, but the "Y" part (through the tunnel, between the highways) is really rough now. I would be all for organizing some locals (this means you, Stubbs, Flusche, and other 'Pool Sharks') to spread some 'crete and smooth that part out. There are some great lines there that are going unskated, which is sickening.
Anybody ever ride La Prada ditch, near Mesquite, TX? In the driest (hottest) part of summer - sometimes - it is dry all the way to the creek at the bottom. Fun as hell to skate through that tunnel.

Nate, I do have pictures of Whip-n-dip but nothing of V-land. My problem is that I don't have a scanner so I can't post them. If you want I could get you some dupes and send em to ya snail mail. Let me know. If yuo want to skate Whip, it's in Dallas @ 635 and Harry Hines Blvd. Can't miss it. Follow the ditch up and under the road and it will open up into another section that is surrounded by the clover leaf. The ditch branches out in this area into a huge Y with a killer hip. Sooooo fun. But watch for the fire ants. Hey Bob, good to hear that you are coming up for a visit again. Should be a good time. We have another park that should be done by the time you are here. Maybe we could hit L. in Kentuky! As for our new park...Once again Chicago has blown an opprotunity to build a park the right way. The design came from Site Design Group, a good outfit. The poor concrete craftsmanship came courtisy of our local park district and local unions. Chicago will not hire any labor for projects of this type (public)that are not from local unions. As a result we have bowls that look like wash boards, crazy transitions, and copeing that is in-out, in- out. Makes my blood boil. For god's sake! Hire a Team Pain, or Dream Land, give em the bloody money and get the hell out of their way. Fricken Unions,(the Park Dist.is union) But once again they are banking that we will all bite oour tongues and tell our selves "it's better than nothing" and, and "it's better than what we used to have which was nothing" and we will and we'd be right. And we will all contine to take trips to Oregon and Colorado, New Mexico and Kentucky Cause that's wherre the best parks are and Chicago is where the best parks are not. Sorry I flipped out in the non-parks area.

Ideal Bank Angle?

What's the ideal angle for a bank ramp?
It has to be steep enough that you can do lip tricks like grinds, but not so steep that you can't get up it.
One of the local parks has a 45-degree bank, and that's pretty hard to get up onto. I suppose the bottom could be transitioned somewhat. Anyway, what are your feelings on the ideal bank angle?

Bill,
You moved to be an artist. Hey -- I've STILL got some wheels for you -- sorry I never mailed them!
Any yes -- whip n dip is still skated to this very day by Dan Wilkes and other Dallas types. Dan has it completely outfitted with nice parking blocks. I think V-land is defunct.
By the way. My Chicago sister-in-law just produced another baby last night, so I expect another spring-time trip to Chicago is going to be in order.

God I love this site. Checked out some of the posts and couldn't believe that some people are talking about bringing wax to a ditch. Whadya shot?! get some balls, get some speed, and get the best feeling grind you will ever get. Good god....wax. Nothing worse than finding your favorite slappy curb all slicked up with that garbage. Time to break out the sand paper and start work, Sand paper works good on steel copeing as well. On a more posative note, any one skate whip-n-dip in Dallas any more? or how about v-land? two killer places that back in the day if you were lucky you could take runs with Jeff P. Whip had a couple great rows of those kick ass round Dallas curbs and a decent roll in. why did I move.

Hey all, Looks like there's alot of interest in the Spillway. If anyone wants to help me broom it up a bit before the skate then let me know. I live in Sterling VA. I think it would be best to go early before the rangers wake up. I will be going there (sure thing)Fri. 3 to drop in a few times. The last time I skated this spot was 4 years ago. Its a beauty. I'll post a meeting spot so I can show everyone where to park and how to hike it. Check out four more of my boards on ebay tommorrow around 12.
Later on Jason.

Hey you marylanders,
Somewhere towards the middle of Jan lets have a big gathering at the Beaver Dam Spillway. It is a huge concrete spill that has 40 ft. sides at 40-45 degree angle sidewalls. It is way back in the woods and next to a lake. It will make a nice riding spot.
Email me for pictures next week.

Hey i love ditches and steep banks... I will post info on spots, but i was wondering if anyone else had some good spots.
"The Magic Carpet"- A very neat little bank-bank ditch in the rockville area. It is near McLean private school. Some kids showed it to me. Email me for better directions
"The yellow banks"- dont know how the name came about, but some pretty rough spots. They are tough but gnarly. They are right behind KATZ supermarket, across from a school. Again, email me for more info
