cbark (and anyone else up to the challenge), I personally guarantee excellent New Mexican hospitality shown by multiple skate tour guides for any kind of terrain you desire. This e-mail should be good until early 2004, so just drop me a line and you name goes down in the books and is dispersed into the network. You'll be taken care of, you've come to the right place. The weather's been hot and dry, perfect for ditch skating. This has been one of the strangest winters ever, and it's only getting hotter. I cannot predict how they will be at any given time, but they've been skatable ever since the Bear race, and if it does rain it dries up in a few hours. So, anytime you can find the time, we've got crews going up several times a week to all kinds of spots, and the network has been established, so you are heretofore permenantly invited. See ya sooner than later, I hope.

Hey K-Lee, I can't wait to make another road trip to Ditch Land. I want to get a crew of Colorado shredders together and head down there. We've been talking about it since we left, but it is time for us to set some dates. If the weather is nice, are the ditches in rideable shape in the next few months? I'd hate to drive down and get turned back.
How about turning us on to a few of those backyard pools? I heard from one of Abe's buddies that there are many pools to be had.

I just finished watching BARGE AT WILL on the Vision DVD reissue. Damn! was that a great video or what?! Tons of ditch and pool skating. Poway, Wallos, Off The Wall and others. Skateparks like Pipeline, Magic Skatepark, Landsdowne. Sooo much cement and not a handrail/ledge in sight until 60 minutes into the video. I really miss this stuff. I can't stand all the damn handrail stuff that dominates videos and magazines these days.

I have helped on a couple concrete projects over the last year or two.Everything from some new trannies at FDR to a fully enclosed in ground pool with vert and bullnose brick coping all the way around. The best way seems to be to just start small and experiment alot.Just keep trying, practice makes perfect. And the reward of skating something you built is well worth it.

the biggest ditches are in the desert

Here in ABQ, it doesn't rain much, hardly ever, but when it does rain, it pours, and in the desert much rain means floods, unless your city has graciously built flood control channels to send it all to the river. Albuquerque lies in a valley with the Rio Grande running through the center. When/if it rains, it all rushes off the mountainside and into the river, taking the city with it if the gigantic flood channels weren't there. Thank god the older ones have perfect transition and are miles long. The Bear comes off of Arroyo del Oso (which is mostly dirt and rocks) and spills into one of the main diversion channels (which dwarf the Bear by a factor of 2 or 3!). Not often, but from time to time, you'll see the skies open up and the ditches fill to the lip with rushing water. Thats when all the kids who didn't know any better get washed along with it and end up floating to El Paso. And THAT'S why ditch skating in ABQ is such a bust, it's for our own good! And this is a perfect time to mention, look for the new and improved "Albuquerque, God's Land of Ditches" website to be up and running in a few weeks, with a new look and a new url. Just gotta get back into the swing of things for school, and then I'm a website building fool. See ya.

Yo Ohioans!! I just wanted to remind y'all that the session we discussed a few months ago at the Blood Bowl in Columbus is still on (once weather improves) in my book!! The thought of spring-time sessions is one of the few things that keeps me from being so cranky while I'm shivering and looking longingly at my board (my girlfriend hasn't started to suspect anything, though- yet).

About digging that ditch..unless you have a good amount of land, 20 (minimum) good friends with strong backs, some heavy equipment, and a tons of concrete and rebar, you'd have a hard time building a workable ditch. If you find a good spot to build something, you should go for a nice bowl, or some nice banks....

After seeing what is going on with people just making their own skatespots (Burnside, Washington Bridge in San Diego) I was thinking: "Why not find a spot, dig out a nice ditch and lay cement?" Problem is, I don't know anything about cement work. Anyone have any experience with this? Can I get the supplies at Home Depot? Any help would be appreciated.

Whip n Dip: Sessioned it about 2 months ago. I live about 7 or 8 minutes from there and hardly skate it. Got pools to skate and they take precedent. Dan Wilkes is the curator of that ditch and can be seen there sometimes with weed-whacker in hand.
V-Land: Me and Lou "the Jew from Longview" Statman had the pleasure of last session. With all the construction going on there were huge dirt clods you had to dodge all the way down. In fact, I left some of my elbow at the ditch that session. I drove by the next day and the crete had crumbled. The only thing that remains is a small section at the bottom and the banked wall at the bottom just before you go under the highway. Sessioning that ditch was scary as hell. As you would walk back to the top you were eyeballing tires coming at you at 75mph. Damn, if one car went down in that ditch you were a gonner for sure.
We have been skating some newer ditches here in Dallas the last 2 or 3 years. The Funnel, the Chute and the Meat Trough.
The Funnel: http://groups.msn.com/SkateSnapsAndyBinns/texasterrain.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=766
The Meat Trough http://groups.msn.com/SkateSnapsAndyBinns/texasterrain.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=769
The Chute: 3 pics

http://groups.msn.com/SkateSnapsAndyBinns/texasterrain.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=777
The Chute is about 125 yards long and all downhill. My favorite ditch in Dallas for sure. The Funnel is a blast too. Bring a big board, big wheels and get your carve on.
Meat Trough is just that. You will leave meat in that ditch. Bring your gloves and your balls.
Coming to Dallas and want the tour? Just email me...

hey mr. dillon where is kentland in pg county?....I've also been having a hard time finding a dry ditch lately....potsprings had a bit of water in it, as did riverdale and the little one in glen burnie also had wet bottoms... Arbutus is dry, but i am a little "sketched" out skating there...about two weeks ago i witnessed a drunk flip his car over the guardrail on the other side of the highway...his car did a giant kickflip.
