Got the latest update up on the web today. Stubbs sent in some killer Texas pics (thanks Stubbs!) and there's a NEW ABQ ditch, the Big Pink Ditch, so new I haven't even had a chance to ride it yet. Hope to this week though, after finals.
Keep those ditch pics coming!

Will send pics of ditches once it stops threatening to rain in the Northeast. I don't think ditch skaters up here are gonna luck-out and have the same drought as we were fortunate enough to have last summer. Anyone else having this problem?

You can easily tuck on the walls, but the trannies are pretty kinky to tuck through. What kind of gear to use? That seems to be the million dollar question lately. I'll be running a Bozi Mad Bomber II with 157mm Seismics and Avilas. Others will be riding different stuff, everyone's got a favorite ride. Beside's, it's not standard terrain by any means, so there isn't any stuff made JUST for Bear riding. After a few practice runs, you'll know exactly what to expect. The Bear is pretty straightforward, not mysterious, just plain gnarly. You'll see.

Anthony, If you have leathers and such, bring 'em, it will only add to your confidence level. If you don't, full pads and a helmet should work fine, does for me. Some guys skate the Bear padless, but some guys haven't fed the Bear yet either. You don't NEED leathers for the Bear, you don't need anything but a skateboard and some guts. You know your own comfort and safety level better than anyone else. Leathers won't make you slower. Wear 'em if you got 'em.
Stubbs, Yeah, I got the killer ditch pictures, and I've been meaning to do an update, but it's finals time here at the University of New Mexico, and being a math tutor for the Athletic department means that I just don't have my finals on my mind, but I've got the math final of every football player on my mind as well. Should be all over by Saturday, and I'll do an update for sure this weekend. Thanks for the submissions, every little bit helps.
NOTE TO ALL DITCH SKATERS: Submit pics, video, or just info of your local ditch to the online Ditch Directory! Without the input of ditch skaters all over the country (or world), this will just be a site showcasing ditches that just a few of us skate. The more people that contribute, the more useful and functional the Ditch Directory becomes for all of us who want to know where all the cool ditches are to skate on our travels. Even if you don't have any pics, but have a local ditch that you skate, just send me the name of your spot and an e-mail address for people to write to for more info or directions. Together, we will map out every skatable ditch and keep the kooks away at the same time. We need your help! www.unm.edu/~moebius
Bozi, Thanks for the words of encouragement! My Mad Bomber II is going to rock the race, even if I don't ;-) I'll do you proud, bozzman!
To anyone coming to ABQ later this month, If you want to check out any of Bozi's boards (except for the new 36" pumper), I've got the killer Bozi quiver and will be giving test rides at the ditches all weekend. Just track me down and I'll hook you up.
8 Days and counting!

Anthony, dont forget Hughs site also has a ton of video clips from last years bear race to study, winners included.
It was great to meet you at the Gathering, you nailed slalom first time out, loved the downhill tuck on the mild longboard slalom course. If you go to Bear race , make sure to hook up with Kaylee, I know you guys would hit it off, hes a great guy.
To everyone who will make the Bear Race, yall suck ;-)
Kaylee, Nyah & Sharon have a blast.

Uh, should I bring my leathers? That looks friggin' nuts. I could see how one could get some nice solid lines on a speedboard but I guess you have to crank it around the cones to be competitive. What kind of gear works well there in a banked slalom competition? Do guys speed-tuck down the drops or does that put your body in a bad rebound position?? Not trying to hustle up some inside information, I just wanna survive!

Anthony, That's a very good question. Actually, speedboards like the one you describe feel GREAT in the Bear, the Randal DH trucks handle the kinky trannies perfectly. It is very possible to get a clean run on one. However, since this is a banked slalom race, I find that I spend way too much time on the wall above each cone on such a setup. To be competitive, you really need to be able to cut the cones tight, even though there are only 6 of them. I went the speedboard route last year, with a DH baseplate in the rear of my Bozi MBII. Like I mentioned, I spent too much time above each cone and coudn't cut them as tight as I would have liked. They work though. For a visual, check out the following video clip on my site. It is of Ryan EP taking the course on a Dregs speedboard with Randal DH trucks and eXkate Cherry Bombs. As you can see, he can handle the course no problem, but just kinda flys by each cone instead of cutting around it.

How would a speedboard with Randall Downhills work in the belly of the Bear? What's the transition like where wall meets flat? There's not much carving action on a speedboard but it seems like a clean run could be possible. I'm sure you guys have tried. Any word?

Tony - glad you're back. Take K-Lee up on his offer, the guy has got some cool tools to work with. We had a great time rippin' w/Lowrey, Mike II, and CW the other nite. The bear has such a cool vibe. Respect the bear or end up feeding it, (sometime you feed it anyway). Later that eve Mike L was seen trying to talk a security guard into dropping in....
The Bear "surprise" is gonna be epic.
I'm in Japan till Sat, see you guys on Sunday. Jet lagged and broke.
Later,

Tony: Glad to hear you picked up on the good ditch vibe. We are going to have to meet up one of these days. The Bear is pretty hardcore for someone getting back into the groove. We should go hit up Indian School or Layton or one of the other cool mellower ditches some time. Drop me an e-mail and we will hook up and skate. I've got a whole quiver of Bozi boards that you can pick and choose a loaner from. Ditches require the longer ride. Hope to hear from you.

Anyone that is going to be in Houston next Saturday, May 10th and wanting some killer Texas ditch action and good fun, get to Watonga Park and skate one of Texas' most legendary ditches. The EZ-7 is on an incline of around 6 degrees, approximately 120 foot in length with parking curbs lining the top all the way down. Theres in inflow channel on one side that is sort of like a mini ditch that feeds into the main ditch. No vibe and great skating awaits you. Hit my email for a flyer. Roll on, children of gravity.........

Is there a website with these vertical riding women you speak of? If not you should do a website. Not trying to demean or embarass but I can't get into street skating and I gotta get the old mojo(-less)working.

About 3 months ago I decided I wanted to start skateboarding again after a layoff of about 11 years. I was kind of sad to see all the familiar decks I grew up with where now replaced with these Popsicle stick looking boards that I can vaguely remember coming out when I stopped skating. Well I got a deck and started skating at a small local cheesy skate park near my house. I went there every other day after work to practice. I did this for about 2 weeks , I kept thinking to myself, “Yeah, I can do this“. It was getting a little easier, I started doing Berts up the side of the quarter pipe. I started to get the feel back into skating. Then it happened. I tore my MCL. It was over., it was all over. 2 weeks into my comeback and I tore my MCL! Being devastated and laid up in bed, all I could think about was skating. I could not get it out of my head, I had to skate again.
If I couldn’t skate anymore for a while, I was going to read and watch anything with skateboarding in it just to fill the void. I was on the internet searching for anything about skating and I found the NCDSA web page. I had seen longboarding before and being a short boarder all my life , I never really thought much of it until I started reading about these great ditches That were perfect for long boarding in my hometown of Albuquerque, NM. Don’t get me wrong, I knew of these ditches, growing up in the NE Heights they are everywhere. I just didn’t think of them too much.
I read numerous posts about THE BEAR and how great it was. It is described as being the Waimea of longboarding, 40 foot walls 30 feet of flat! It sounded incredible. I had to see it for myself. So last night after work I decided to take a look. I drove up and I found a place to park. I got out a walked up the hill to the ditch. It gave me the same feeling you get when you walk up the tunnel to a huge sports stadium., you know the anticipation, the eagerness to see a huge football or baseball field. That’s the feeling that I got. When I got to the top, I looked down to see the most incredible ditch of all time, the bear is a beauty. It was all that I imagined it to be. …Huge!
At the bottom of the ditch there were 3 guys with longboards , they invited me down to chill out with them. We engaged in small talk and I asked one of them if I could try out his board. He said sure. So I hopped on and proceeded to go down the center of the ditch, no pads, torn MCL and all . I tell you what, I have never gone that fast on a skateboard since I held on to the back of a truck about 12 years ago. As I started to go faster I also started to wobble a bit and I thought to myself for a split second, “ I am going to wipe out and make a total ass out of myself in front of these really good skaters.” But I was able to straighten it out and turn around and come back. It was so fun. The speed is incredible here. When I made it back we talked more and shared a few laughs. As we all talked I felt a true brotherhood with these guys, We had the same interests in music and most of all skating , I felt that I had so much in common with them. Then a guy named George showed up and proceeded to rip. I was truly amazed.
An hour went by and I had to get home. I told them I would be back and I would see them again. I felt so welcomed there.
As I drove home, I thought about how cool these dudes were and I thought to myself “ If I would have wiped out, these guys would have picked me back up and back on to that board.” For I truly believe I made new friends that day.
So here is a special shout out to Mike, Mike, C-Dub and George who I didn’t get to meet, because he was busy tearing it up.
Peace Tony
