Much gladness ensues after seeing you post, Steve. Heal up, and rest.
As GBMII said, it continued on... what he didn't say was that he put on a nice showing, too. Props to everyone who rolled into this weekend; it was one to remember.
Stay safe, brothers and sisters.

New King of the Bear, but Hack takes the title

The race went on as we tried to put Steves horrible crash out of our heads, and stay focused on our lines.
I'm sure G I Joe will post all the details of the weekend later, but here's some of the scoop.
Day one at the Bear had local ripper Rob Palmer on top, with local Will in second and Hackett in third.
Day two showed why BLR is always a force. All the boys were absolutely maching around the course at the Harper Arroyo. The 40 yard push-in made for some hair ball starts with Bowman, Hack, Bulky, Ruler, Palmer, Will, and the Timeship crew having a go of it. After the first run the wind cranked up and times picked up a few seconds.
The day ended with BLR ruling the podium. Hack won the combined event by .01 sec over local Rob Palmer. Bulky filled out the podium. (in more ways than one)
I don't want to get any of the other places wrong so I'll let Joe post the real deal.
Awesome event by all involved. Big Shouts to Joe and Timeship, Deathbox and BLR, and all of the support crews. And Don B who ran a tight ship on the timers.
And huge shouts to the Redneck Ripper Robert Palmer, new King of the Bear!
See you at Kona Boyzzzzzz!!!
Later,
GBMII

Steve, it’s not uncommon for people to not be able to remember what happened in the waking hours leading up to a severe head injury. The same thing happened to me in my senior year of high school, when my car turned too sharp for the speed I was going (supposedly I fell asleep and drifted onto the shoulder, over compensating on my return to the road) and rolled three times, with my head hitting the pavement through the window. They told me that I was on my way to school, but I never could remember anything that happened prior to waking up in the hospital.

Local boy Rob (hillbilly) Palmer took the bear back from Hackett! After it was all said and done, Hackett proved he still has it by taking the overall. Steve, get well soon, best wishes, that was the worst bail I have ever seen. Protec helmets might not be all that, but it saved your life. Never forget ditches are deadly! Thanks to everyone who came out, SICK weekend! Budro, and the deathbox guys, thanks for everything will be waiting for next year. peace out guys

you might want to check:
http://www.skydiveorange.com/helmets.htm
overkill for sure. seems like we need something between the skate/bmx helmets and the full on motorcycle/skydiving/auto racing helmets.
Maybe that Giro Switchblade - but I wish it was cooler looking (lose the visor, slighly smaller chin guard if possible, optional windscreen).
Did anyone win the Bear?
Yep, we're a niche market.

Glen D... I have been having an impossible time finding a helmet that fits my huge mellon and I would imagine that you have a similar problem. My noggin is slightly less than a size 8 and the biggest of the skate hemets still don't fit.
Judi is there anything that can be done by for us guys who want a large decent looking helmet (those bell huge noggin ones don't quite fill the bill)??? HR

Steve, I'm glad your okay. I hope the large fits. I'll send it out Monday. Yeah I was at Hood, I'm the one with the Switchblade and lovely scar on the chin. All helmets have standards, each for the sport they are specific too. The helmet I'm sending is not multi impact, it's good for one good crash then it's time to replace it. (You should replace out a helmet every 3 years anyway.) New technology new materials. I skate with the Switchblade on the GS and the Pneumo for flat stuff. It has an internal roll cage. I've seen helmets after Lance got hit by a car, seen Bobbi Julich's helmet at 50 mph crash they worked good once. And as you know once is good enough. Take care.

also one more thing. Every helmet I've seen has less foam in it for their bigger sizes. Instead of making a small, med, large, xl, shell, they make one and then add or remove foam to size. Which helmet passed the spec test, the small with lots of foam or the XL, with the tissue paper lining.

So who makes good helmets?
None of the helmets seem to be measured against the same standard. Some have a bike rating, some a Kayak rating some none at all.
When I was designing electronic musical instruments I dealt with UL apporvals. I came to learn that a UL approval meant nothing, other than you paid your fee and that they tested your gear in nebulous ways that didn't amount to anything. I would bet these rating systems are the same. Each of these rating systems have strenghts and weeknesses and I'd bet an aluminum salad bowl with a hunk of foam in it could pass and get these ratings.
So who makes good helmets for skateboarding and how can we test them without learning their weekenesses at someone else's misfortune.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and thoughts. It's after 4:00 PM on Sunday here in ABQ, and the wife and I missed the Noon and 2:50 PM flights...Next is around 5, and our original flight is still available after 8PM. Sorry we didn't stick around at the hospital, but you wouldn't want to stay, either.
I read (from Kaylee) that I crashed on my second practice run. That makes me even more mad that I biffed it, cuz I had a clean run the first time. Seriously, I cannot remember what occured from the time I woke up on Sat. until I found myself in the hospital. Scary stuff.
Thanks again to Judi (we met in Hood River last year, right?), Jeff, and everyone reading this message today. Even with it's flaws, that Protec saved my life. I'm just gonna halfta see the pix and hear the stories later.
Anywhoo, I'll be at home for the MD weekend, so drop me a line or a call. I'm gonna stay off boards for a few weeks, but I'm building up a custom for one of the local groms. I'll check back into NCDSA when I get more information.
Thanks again! Steve & Laura from Scottsdale, AZ.

Hey Steve,I'm glad to read that you're doing alright. I put you right on the prayer list this morning. That must've been a heck of a wipeout to wreck your helmet and crack yer noggin'! I hope you take your time recovering with this one. I'll be keeping you on the prayer list for awhile yet.. Much Luck,my friend.

We are about to go visit Steve in the hospital to see how he is doing, and to bring him some stuff we've been able to get together for him, including a Ditch Witch T-shirt signed by everyone we could get to. He'll also be getting some bumper stickers that say "I survived the Bear". Please send any good tidings that you can spare to the above address. We will report on his situation as it improves.

Steve is one of the people that made returning to skateboarding after a two decade absence an extra fun thing for me.
He traded me a peralta warptail II, like I had as a kid and made the whole thing seem like a special adventure.
Steve, here's to a full and speedy recovery!

very briefly--
just a passing glance on the way to dinner with the in-laws, but what a beautiful sight it was--some sort of medium-high concrete school banks, one block up from east queen street in riverside, at broadview or something like that--the riverside something cafe is where we were at. check it out!!

This is just awful. My suspicions of Protecs have been realized. And now a good guy, Steve Michael, is just hanging onto conciousness because the company didn’t listen to my criticism of their helmets.
We are praying for you, Steve. I sure hope you pull through this.
In honor of Steve, I am setting aside the trucks I got in a trade from him until I know he will be OK.

It was Steve in AZ that fed the Bear this morning. Luckily, he was wearing his Pro-Tec, but it crushed on impact, as did his skull. As of an hour ago, he was able to remember where he was and why he was here, despite having a fractured skull and a brain injury. Keep sending your prayers and thoughts, they seem to be working.
