Hugh (and other interested parties),
Check out www.jcwhitney.com They have a boatload of half-helmets and I ordered my motorcycle (soon to be adopted for skating) helmet from there.

Dave... Only name I can find on these are "Bell Half Helmets"... They seem to be available at a bunch of online moto shops in the $50 - $60 Range and a ton of sizes.
I am going to hit some of the local shops in town and see if I can try one on... HR

Here's a mini comparison on weight, vents, shell sizes.
Pnuemo 284 grams 10 oz. 19 vents (3 shell sizes) 3 sizes SML, Rollcage Xen 298 grams or 10.5 oz. 17 vents (3 shell sizes) 3 sizes SML, Rollcage Semi 340 grams or 12 oz. 12 vents (3 shell sizes) 3 sizes SML Switchblade 655 grams or 23.50 oz. 18 vents (3 shell sizes) 3 sizes SML Mad Max II 1225 grams or 43 oz. 11 vents (2 shell sizes) 5 sizes XS-XXL Flint SC 750 grams or 26.50 oz. 10 vents (3 shell sizes)
Bell Moto 1/2 shell weighs 1050 grams or 33.76 oz. vents none. 5 sizes XS-XXL not sure on the shell sizes can't find the Product manager
This should help for you to decide vents, weight size.
The guy that runs the test lab is at a surf kite contest. I'll ask him about the testing question later. I think trees and snow are as hard as pavement when your going 40. The lab tests helmets from different heights, angles on different surfaces, flat edges, corners, all conditions, cold, wet, heat...we have computer readings inside that measure G forces. To simulate what your brain may be feeling. Not pretty. Hope this helps. Skate safe and have fun.

Judi, are the shells on the Giro's "one size fits all...some better than others" or do they have different sized shells? Are the snow helmets designed to deal with the concrete impact that we get in skating or should we only be looking at bike helmets?

Judi, what do you think of the Bell half helmet motorcycle models? Like the one pictured below... for a big headed guy?
Lenny, Black Leather is cool, but the BLR guys have that angle pretty well sewn up! HR

Switchblade has large vents and the chinbar and visor come off. Mad Max II not as many vents pads don't come out better price then the Switch. Semi light weight and lots of vents. Seems to be the most popular. The newest hard to find and most expensive. Is the Xen lots of vents, internal roll cage, removeable visor. Sick.

Hamm, Sorry to correct you but Hackett wasn't wearing a Switchblade. He was wearing a Flint. A snowboard helmet. Passing a set of tough helmet standards. Anyone passing through Santa Cruz, I can give you a tour of our test lab, you can watch the impact testing on the highend stuff and the low end. Then you decide. I don't care which brand you buy. You couldn't pay me to wear some of the helmets I see getting smashed. The main reason Giro doesn't make a specific skateboard helmet is it can't compete with the cheap stuff and won't lower the brand. We make highend helmets and mid range stuff they work as well but aren't multi impact. Meaning they won't take multiple hits just one good one. That's my two cents on the helmet thing. Enough said, looking forward to Breck. Steve hope your feeling better that's all that matters. Congrats Hackett, Bulky and Richie in LA.
