I am reading in these posts much opinion and falsities stated as fact.
My suggestion is to watch all the different television series called "Frontline" on Middle East, Iraq, and Saddam by PBS for a quick and easy FACTUAL overview on the area and it's leaders and our dealings with that area over history.
This is not about the USA getting oil for themselves. It is however about the money from oil that this brutal dictator would be able to direct to amassing the worlds largest stockpile of chem/bio/nuclear weaponry.
Saddam “has” billions that could have gone to his people instead of wmd’s, so that those estimated 300,000 it is “estimated” that have needlessly died since the gulf war.
Saddam, his Sons, and cohorts are without doubt the biggest thread to the free world.
America is doing the right thing, yet a little late. They did make a misjudgment during the first Gulf War, thinking that Saddam’s own people would eject him. They will get it right this time.
Thank God President Bush has the balls to have made this tough decision.
The French did not have the balls to stand up to Hilter and let him right in. The USA and its Allies liberated them. But they are doing it again.
But as far as Chirac is concerned his motives are political, for he wants to be the leader of the European Union.

hey hamm the US gives israel $3 billion p.a., but they have to take $2 billion in armaments david was making a point that you missed entirely - Israel is in breach of un resolutions by occupying the west bank and they are moving back into Gaza as we speak. they develop atom bombs and chemical weapons and what do you do? support them to the hilt just cos you dont know the score, dont for one minute think that we are the same

it is interesting how most of the world thinks bush is a stupid wacko, who wants to fight anybody, and who sneaked his awy into office. it is almost like bush thinks that because of sept. 11th we have the right to fight whoever we want. of course we only fight for things that will benifit us, we can't lose our precious, precious oil right?
the rest of the world thinks the US and all its citizens are bent on war and death as the only means to solve anything. i saw a poll on the news yesterday how 66% of the country supports the war. that doe mean that 34%of the country does not suport the war, which is still alot.
this OF course is my opinion, and i go to a college which according to todays issue of the San Francisco chronicle produces extreme activists, such as racheal corrie, the american who got run over by a bulldoser(twice) by a israli who was trying to destroy a palistinian homeshe wa trying to protect.
now why is'nt the US putting as muhc effort into Israel as it is into Iraq. oh yes because it does not directly benifit us.

I have to agree with Helen Thomas about Bush Jr. He is the worst president we have ever had. With his religious insanity, pandering to the nazi right, wrecking the economy, along with the things that he has said about the world and the United States. Factor in that his election was very dubious (appointed by the supreme court), and his appointment of the "bill of rights slayer" Ashcroft and we have a troubling leadership in the USA.
Great Moments in Freedom:
Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe. -- Thomas Jefferson
To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. -- Theodore Roosevelt
The history of free men is never really written by chance but buy choice - their choice. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower Among free peoples, the open exchange of ideas is our greatest security. - Ronald Reagan There ought to be limits to freedom. - George W. Bush

Glen:
You are welcome.
The article with respect to Bush really scared me. I probably would have thought twice in the last election before having voted for him had I known this side of him. I like to think that there is no room for God in the government and that the incumbent is supposed to represent all, no matter whether they have voted for him or not. So I am disappointed.
I agree with you that the decisions he is faced with are serious. Our duty is to demand clear reasons and facts because after all the boys and girls in the military have only us, the citizenry, to count on in order to make sure that the lives they give and take is done for a darn good purpose and not wasted... I have yet to hear a reason from this government that would justify the life of one of the 250,000 boys and girls we have sent to the Middle East.

“Why of course the people don’t want war…But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship …Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they’re being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.” - Hermann Goering, Nuremberg, 1946 Mail me - oldschoolnazi@brazilianhideaway.com

hugh, you sound just as deranged as bin laden. its only a book. a heavily edited book, at that. i recommend the Koran, it is completely unadulterated, the prophets words as he wrote them. still just a book though. its no wonder they hate you when you threaten them with annhiallation.
shrox, you say they lived a primitive existence which shows you need to do some reading yourself. tha arab people invented; modern mathematics (they gave us the 0, allowing decimal systems) astronomy hospitals, including the concept of quarantine back when europeans beleived disease was caused by "bad air" sanitation grid references for mapping celestial + solar navigation the list goes on
you call the USA the greatest nation on earth, but by which measure? i suppose if you use the percentage of its own citizens in jail then yes, your ahead by a mile.

Nima, thanks for the link. I read the GWBush article last week and really liked it. I admit that I did vote for him, but only out of distaste for the other option. Jesus never teaches anything about overthrowing governments so I don't believe that we (Christians) should be involved in that. If he feels called by God for his position I think that's a good thing. The last president seems to have felt called to get more chicks and to be self serving. I didn't like Bush Sr., I thought that Reagan should have been put to trial for treason, the weapons for hostage, Iran Contra thing. I'm glad I don't have to answer for my actions 10, 20 or 30 years ago, I would also hate being held responsible or being compared to my father. If I would hate this, I'd bet GWB hates it too. I believe that GWB is a good person now, I believe that Jimmy carter is a good person, I have doubts about the other presidents we have had in the last 50 years.
I'm glad I don't have to make the decisions he has to make. That's probably why I feel called to be a video editor, my work decisions don't really matter in the big picture of things.
Mark Twain said "in all matters of opinion, our advisaries are insane". I believe this too and know that your arguments will not change my or anybody else's opinons, nor will mine.
good topic Arab, it got the board going today.

Isaac or Ishmael?

"When colonel H jones took the pins out of two hand grenades and jumped into an argentine machine gun nest with them we gave him the Victoria Cross, yet it was accepted that it was a suicide assault in his commendation. One rule for them, one for us."
What does a machine gun nest in battle have to do with a school bus full of kids or a shopping mall??!! You completely lost me on that one...
"If you think Bush is such a great leader in times of conflict why dont you ask him where he was in 1974 while the draft board were looking for him."
I didn't vote for Bush, I left the presidential choice blank, just did the local ticket. Better Bush than Gore though in light of what the future held...
If we have to go back in time, lets go to the beginning.
Is it Isaac or Ishmael?
Both were born to Abraham, but only one fulfilled the prophesy given to Abraham's wife, Isaac was born to her, Ishmael was born to a servant girl that Abraham's wife had arranged to sleep with Abraham because she thought she was too old.
So now, thousands of years later, "Christianity" and "Judaism" believe Isaac is the chosen one, "Islam" believes Ishmael is the chosen one. We (the ubiquitous we, United States of America, most of the western world, and Israel) are the greatest nations the world has ever seen, they (the ubiquitous they) lived a primitive existence until the discovery of oil in the 1920's, but are now willing to blow themselves because they say our presence "defiles" their land. Well, they invited us back in after England released them from the British Empire.
Do you you believe it was Isaac or Ishmael?
Jonnyx, lets spend some time teaching the other readers basic history before we engage in any debate, or they won't be able to follow along. You do know the timeline I hope.

Glen: Interesting graph. Although with 70% of the world's oil reserves located in the middle east (http://www.ott.doe.gov/facts/archives/fotw220.shtml) and with Iraq's reduction in oil production (http://www.worldoil.com/INFOCENTER/STATISTICS_DETAIL.asp?Statfile=_worldoilproduction) along with the amount of reserves second only to saoudi arabia (http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/iea/table81.html) it only makes sense why Iraq and why now.
Incidently, with respect to your earlier comment--for the Bush's evangelical slant see: http://www.msnbc.com/news/878520.asp?

the attractions of iraqi oil are 1/ that it is extremely close to the surface and thus cheap to exploit 2/ that there are vast reserves that saddam refuses to exploit, showing your figures up for what they are. watch those percentages change
