South Florida Barns and NO Bulls lets us down again! No Concrete Wave on the shelf or even listed in their computer. "But I got it here last month!" I say. So I broke down, got off my wallet and got a subscription too. but to late for the Nov. issue. Did you see that someone has picked up on the shortage and offered one on ebay? $9.99 opening bid or buy it now for $13.99. The wife got in on it...and on the phone... found some copies 200 miles away at a B&N in Orlando. They are sending me 2 copies for cover price plus shipping UPS. Goota love a women who supports her skater!

Arab - I have no beef with you or Nathan. I meant what I said in person, and in our numerous emails back and forth over the past year. I have nothing but respect for Nathan and yourself as skaters and as people. However, if you are calling me a liar, and implying there is some sort of conspiracy against you and your family, you are incorrect on both counts.
If you want to know where I got the results from, here is where I got the results from. Thank you, Jani Soderhall - if it weren't Jani, I would have had to slip the article to the next issue! I got correct name spelling from NCDSA's contest registration list (hence "Terry Kirby", not "Terence"), and Jack Smith filled me in on missing results, proper names, and other events as best he could via telephone two days after the event.
I'm sorry I didn't get the Top Four results in every box. I made every effort to do so. There was a deadline that I barely made as it was. I had to cut thousands of words, to allow Farid's excellent photos in, and we still didn't get all the photos in that we wanted. And I still screwed up and called Jen "Jen O'Shei", when she and Don haven't gotten married yet.
Here are the Top Four final results for the 2003 FCR World Championships, for boy's and girl's divisions:
Boy's Open Slalom: 1 - Dylan Gordon; 2 - Joe McLaren; 3 - Josh Byrd; 4 - Nathan Groff. Girl's Open Slalom: 1 - Keli Benko; 2 - Lauren Gordon; 3 - Kati Woodward; 4 - N/A. Boy's Tight Slalom: 1 - Josh Byrd; 2 - Dylan Gordon;; 3 - Nathan Groff; 4 - Joe McLaren. Girl's Tight Slalom: 1 - Lauren Gordon; 2 - Keli Benko; 3 - Kati Campbell; 4 - N/A.
There you go.

Arab, Don't drag me into your paranoid theories on who's out to get you and your family. Leave my F-ing name out of it.
Also, was the picture lame or the person in it? Be a little more clear, your diatribe is vague due to the steam and hot air you spew forth.
If you don't like my photos, fine. There are probably a lot of people that don't. But there are also a lot of people that do, that's why they are in there.
PS I feel that CW is trying to get an overall feel of ALL types of skatebaorders and doesn't cater towards the tattoo leather clad skaters only. You might not like it, but some people wear lycra in races......... and win. Free your mind, your ass will follow.

You mean to say there really is/was a Mr. Bennett©®™? If you can drag him away from "kicking A on the gator farm©®™," that's one I'd like to see. What an amazing line of patter/BS his ads©®™ had! They were print infomercials©®™ before there was such a thing on TV©®™.

Hi Arab
thanks for pointing this out. if you can let me know who got 4th place, we will definitely add their name as well in the next issue as a clarification.
I absolutely would want to keep things consistant when it comes to reporting races.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Arab - I only had the results that were posted at the time the article was written. I planned to post results for the Top Four in each category, but not all those results were available to me at the time I wrote the article. I got full official results several days after the magazine had already gone to press.
The deadline was just a couple days after the race was over. I didn't even have complete names for the winners available to me, and had to piece together information from a bunch of sources (this website's contest registration page being one of them) just to get a complete name.
Michael and I are both down with the kids. They are remarkable and amazing. We were all skater kids once! Neither of us planned to exclude anyone. But the time pressure, combined with a dearth of information, left us with what was published. We did succeed in getting the article expanded from one or two pages, to four pages.
There will be more articles on slalom competition. Next time, I'll glue myself to Krisik and get a complete copy of the race results as soon as they are posted.

How about 1 page an issue on "Average Joe". Whether it's a local ripper, or just a lover of all things skate. Someone you've never heard of that's been plugging away forever.

One guy I am very interested in finding is Mr. Bennett. I would love to know what he was thinking with the plastic baseplates!
Slowly, but surely, we are finding folks. Vicki Vickers is number 1 priority on the female list. I wonder if she still skates...
Bobby Piercy and Torger Johnson and Conrad Miyoshi have since passed....

How about Paul Schmitt or Bruce Walker. Both of these guys have been there since the early days...and both have seen every change possible over the years and would have a good perspective on where it's going.
Pictures of Paul's factories, processes, inventions he's done..that would be very interesting...very "Surfer's Journal-ish"
Bruce has so many wonderful slides from back in the day you should include him in the roster of these new photogs you are recruiting. His stuff is great.

Olson, Andrecht, and Weaver would all be great. Torger would be hard to interview. I think skaters today need to know something about their past like most surfers do, but at the same time you can't get lost in the past.
A Bob Burnquist or Bucky Lasek interview won't be seen in the other mags because they aren't street skaters. The stuff they are doing is so far ahead it's crazy. Tony Hawk is probably the most important skater based on the fact that he enabled the crossover of coverage. Most non-skaters know who Tony Hawk is, that's huge for the skateboarding industy. It's actually gotten non-skaters to recognize what we do.

Matt-Kevin Reed did indeed rip, I met him around 1975 when he came to So Cal to skate with his Mom and little brother, me and a friend took them to the Fruit Bowl and several other places, He rode this gnarly pintail board with a black truck bushing bolted on the tail as a kind of stop/tail thing......
Not only was a he a great skater but he was on the cover of SURFER mag not only once, but twice, 2 years ago when we did the Old School Skate Jam, there was word that he may come, that was the last I heard of him.

Ok Mike I can't take it anymore I'm subscribing. Barneynoballs still doesn't have the new issue with Jay Smith down here in sunny South Fla. so I'm logging off right now and sending you a check (I hate Paypal). Old fart skate sessions have been going on religiously every Sunday at 9:00am at Palm Beach Gardens Sk8 Park. Notable names that have been known to show up; Dan Murray (and his son Andrew), Tab Textor, Bruce Walker, Kelly Lynn, Mike Rogers, Chuck Dinkins, Chris Baucom. You just never know who might show up. I just hope we can keep this up until we are all into our 70's.

Still no CW at B&N. This really bites. I know of at least a dozen guys in FL also looking for it.
BTW, while looking for CW @ B&N today, I picked up and thumbed through that Tony Hawk mag and there where 2 things in it I have issues with...
First it states that TH is THE most influential skater of all time. I disagree. He may be the most prosperous of skaters. But if there is any one skater that has had more influence, it`s Alan Gelfand. Heck, on the TH video game, they have a button called the OLLie button. No TH button.
And secondly, there`s a section in the mag that lists the skaters that had influences on skating. And guess what, AG doesn`t get mentioned.
Totally lame self gratifacation hype rag.
I WANNA CW REAL BAD!!!
