Hey Michael (or any other Torontoans) Is there any indoor vert or bowls in the Toronto area? Looks like I get to spend the majority of January in Brampton and I need a place to skate if the ground is covered in the white stuff.
Also, is Vanderhoof (sp?) complete?

If you could, please send HH's address to me in e-mail so that I may correspond with him. I appreciated his skateboarding back in the day. He would probably like getting a letter in the mail considering where he lives and I think I could find a few minutes to write him a few paragraphs...
I appreciate the fine job you are doing with Concrete Wave. It's a great magazine, has it's own style and definately captures the feeling that I am looking for as a skateboarder of thirty plus years.
Please replace the underscore with an "a" in my e-mail address and name as I am filtered and or banned from ncdsa.com thank you.

I received a letter from Harvey Hawkes yesterday. Some of you may remember him from the 70's skate scene. He was part of the Badlands crew.
Sadly, through a series of very unfortunate events, Harvey's in jail - Soledad prison.
In his letter Harvey talks about a number of things. I believe that people do deserve a second chance, especially if they screwed up by accident (which was the case in this situation).
What is interesting is that Harvey has been denied parole 4 times now. I explained what this meant to my 7 and 9 year old kids. Their jaws were on the floor.
Sometimes, I explained, you don't get a second chance. I could tell it was pretty hard hitting stuff. It left an impact. Hell, the whole experience is leaving a formidable impact on me as well.
We are planning a feature on Harvey --telling his life story - you will find it unreal. I sincerely hope that it leads to his parole.
So, if you're a skater out there, what are some of your experiences? Ever been to jail? Know someone in jail?

My Skate Wife found the sport through me and at 40 still skates. its no problem for me to meet the guys for a weekly session and take my sons to the skate park on sundays but what makes her above and beyond a good Skate Wife is the 100 plus skateboards in my collection. "As long as it makes you happy" I seem to be running out of room and it is overflowing to other rooms and she dosn't mind!!!!!

#7 The Lying Thing

As a middle-aged skater I'm torn about lying when it comes to my skateboarding, even with injuries. I definitely see the value of keeping the negative statistics down during ER visits, but when it comes to putting up with the bothersome comments of colleagues and family, I'm not as ready to "stay in the closet". I ask myself, "Would I lie if it was a skiing injury?" Probably not. If we want to be accepted as skaters for life, just as other middle aged athletes are accepted in their athletic pursuits, then we've also got to be ready to take on the bothersome, silly and even disdainful comments and challenge people's negative prejudices face-to-face. Some of them won't get it, but others may start to understand.
Let's face it, we are the pioneers here. Skateboarding has only been around long enought for there to be a relatively small (but growing) group of middle aged skaters for life. How we publicly present ourselves and our passion for skateboarding will have an important impact on how long it takes everybody else to accept that we are here to stay.

Yep, nothing like having a cool, supportive girlfriend who actually thinks very highly of skateboarders in general and of Tony Trujillo in particular, who seems to have replaced Allen Iverson as her favorite bad boy. Something about the dangerous ones....
The fact that she helped organize the last DCDC race in 48 hours and now rides my Bozi Mad Bomber down mellow hills pretty much now makes her one of us!
Thanks Amber and welcome aboard!!

Skate wife, motorcycle racing wife, kart racing wife, old British car restoring wife. She's the absolute very best. Puts up with loads, BUT...if hypothetically you had the option of being married to guy who (a) had a bunch of skateboards he was totally passionate about riding and fooling about with and going to races with other like minded rejuveniles with, and , subsequently was stoked all the time and happy to spend tons of time working on your 50 year old house, or (b) sat in front of the tube watching sports and being grouchy and spent shedloads of money on golf stuff, which he did badly, a guy with the anti-stoke. Which one would you want? Skate wives are awesome, but remember, skaters make the best husbands. I don't think any of us take the fact that we're still able to skate for granted...

Mr DAN, I gave up snowboarding in 1998, it was one of the best decisions I've made as it's ruined my left shoulder, and messed up my neck, I tried going back to my roots of pre-skiarea backhill powder riding (to avoid the "edge-slap" of packed groomed snow) but saw too many trees too close (no impacts, just too close). I had to decide: snowboard and in 5 years be too damaged to skateboard, backpack, make and shoot primitive archery equipment, teach stone age Technology (yes) etc, or give up snowboarding and do all that other stuff hopefully into my 50's and possibly 60's. It was an easy choice, Telemark skiing went by the wayside at the same time. That's probably way more answer than you wanted but that's it. Later Man - Paul Howard

Hardly long enough to submit as a story, but....I have the best skate wife EVER! She has NEVER told me I couldn't go skate. Here's the secret I have shared with many: get fat! She sees skating as GETTING EXERCISE and not PLAYING in the street/park with my friends. Consequently, I get to go whenever I want.
The flipside to this, though, is I get no mercy whatsoever when I complain about sore muscles and tired joints.
ps...yes, the weather for PBG Sundays has been incredible. MB, we wish you were here, too....then maybe we might get some magazines outa ya ;-)
STILL none at any So. Fla. B&N that I have found, anyway.

We have been having this discussion on the FloridaSkater.com guestbook. here was my post: Couldn't get CW local. O.K. The wife gets on the phone and finds me 2 copies of Concrete Wave 200 miles away in Orlando. She buys them with HER MONEY! and has them shipped to me overnight express! That's gotta be worth some big points. She lets me detour on the way home from a Melbourne girls U14 soccer tournament to skate a few hours with Tim E., Bruce Walker, and Jim mcCall at Satellite while she sat and watched.... more points!!! She videotapes the Gardens Grind for me so I could just skate and not have to see the event thru a viewfinder. The women made sandwiches and stuck them in the cooler for me and Andrew to take to Grind for life!!!! When the GFL after party at Merrick's went late and I was... let say... less than fully capable... she let me sleep over and hit PBG skatepark in the morning! That one cost me some serious "bitching" and not being able to even mention a skateboard for a week... but I got away with it. Not to mention all the Disney trips where she let me slip away and skate OrlandoSP, Oviedo or Vans. I think I've got a safe lead. It's not cheating that our "first date" back in 1981 was to Solid Surf Skatepark is it???? No one said this had to be fair!

At 41 years old, I'd have to say the main reason I'm still able to skate is a long history of wearing my pads - all of them, especially my knee pads. I didn't used to stretch much but the last 2 years I find it helps when I stretch not only before I ride, but every night before I go to bed. My Wife is definately an asset as she's very supportive of my skating and egged me on to enter Morro Bay this year despite prior plans to go on a backpacking trip we talked about (her backpacking trip which she planned and postponed until I got back - How many guys meet women who are at least if not more outdoorsey than they are? I lucked out Big Time! Eh!)Fortunantely I haven't needed the insurance yet but I'm glad it's there, and fortunately I live in Western Oregon where skateboarding and public skateparks make skating less of a novelty, at my age I'm a novelty to some extent in my town but a well accepted novelty. #7. like Bill Helene said... Lie. I mean about where you got your injury. You were playing Football... Basketball... Baseball... or Tennis... and it was on one of those free city built courts. You know the ones no one hardly uses. the ones right next to the city built skatepark thats packed and they're charging $12 a head.

The article "Skate Related Injury at Middle Age" was right on! I felt he was talking about me. All of us plus or minus "fortyish" grandmasters can relate. It made me want to flesh out the prerequisite list for the middleaged skater. Mine goes something like this: 1. A JOB. I know that gets in the way of skating time, but a job usually means you have numbers 2 thru 5. A winning lottory ticket will also do. 2. Heath Insurance... usually you need number 1 for this. 3. $$$... you'll need this for all the different board setups you want, plus travel, and the above mentioned health insurance... see number 1 again. 4. A Supportive Wife or Girlfriend... you'll need number 1 again. An unsupportive EX-wife or EX-girlfriend will do. 5. Pads,Pads,Pads - Good Quality Pads are a must... along with relearning how to knee slide (I'm still working on it) instead of running it out ...which I'm to fat to do anyway. 6. Stretch before skate. No lecture, You know you have to do it now. What have I left out? Mike did you get a chance to check out the carve train clips on the Guest3 site?

Last weekend was perfect! 65-70 degrees, clear skies for the Palm Beach Gardens park "Old School" Sunday Morning 9-12 session. On to the new Abacoa park's pool after. Even Steve Marinak of FloridaSkater.com made an appearence! He was laying down some sweet berts and I think we've got him hooked on the carve trains... because he has already got a pass to make it again this weekend! I think Oelsner YMCA pools are in order for the after session this time.
