.....yep, more young guns will be in there... nostaglia is fun, but it's not all what we want to be about...
you have to mix up the soul of the past with the soul that's out there now.
just you wait till you see what I've got cooking...

This reminds me of something I had thought when I read the latest mag. It's great to read the "Catching up with..." article and it would be great to also get to meet some of the hot young guns who are ripping it up now too. Maybe it could be an "Introducing..." article series. Like the "Who's Hot" section of Skateboarder. This could also move the process of change. If it's all nostalgia, then we end up being stuck, or changing in place. If we honor the past, promote the present and nurture the future, then we'll generate real change.

Michael, There is this little grom that I`ve seen at OLLiewood that shreds. All his repitoire is old school. From busting ollie transfers from the mini bowl to vert, b/s f/s airs, rock and rolls, and a bunch of lip tricks. I don`t know the kids name but I`ll get it. I think he`s like 8 or 9 yrs old. His dad used to skate but I think a recent compound wrist fracture may have permanately sidelined him.
I was talking to the kids dad and he said the kid is so good because it`s what he loves. No parental overkill pressure.
I then talked to the kid and asked of he is into new school skreet (mizpelt on poypuss) tricks. The kid just gave me the stink eye like I was some kook...heh heh!!
Anyhoos, I heard that there might be some grom session at OLLiewwod this thurs night. Maybe Dan can get some vid and someone else can get pics.
Since you`re seeking some vids, what is your preferred format?

Yep...I'm one. And a big belated "Thank You" to Michael for putting the article in CW. It is an honor. And it sounds like some folks could relate to what I wrote. But lets hope that we all can't keep relating over and over again or even our most supportive spouses will start complaining. Well, everyone except Hackett's.

The groms' reactions

Last week I was skating our local skate park and several kids started asking the "How long have you been skating?" questions and the "So what tricks can you do?" questions. Somehow the discussion came around to handstands and they pleaded with me to do one. When I gave in and rode a handstand across the street area they and a group of teens who'd been watching from the sidelines broke out into applause. I never expected that! It was just a handstand. In fact, in two years I've never heard applause in the skatepark, even after seeing some amazing stuff go down on the mini ramp. One of my buddies, who started skating in '84 commented that that was the first time he'd seen a handstand live. Was it Hackett in Chlorine who said, "We do tricks that are so old, they're new!"? Please correct me if I'm wrong on the quote.

Yesterday at our park would have been perfect for it... after taking a torch to the ice in the bowls, 7 well-over-thirty-year-olds spent the next few hours sessioning. One kid came up to us and said, "I thought old school night was Wednesday." We just smiled and told him, "...it's always old school night."

My wife considers herself a "skate widow". She doesn't have a problem with handing out hall-passes, or even letting go of her car when mine craps out and I have to officiate 60 miles away. But she doesn't necessarily get it. In fact, she has her own section at Ditchrider United called "Skate Widows".

Ok Dave
everyone knows that you have been very helpful in getting concrete wave cooking...and I am sure folks are gonna be stoked when they find out what's coming, but let's give Zannah a full page to tell her story to the CW readers... just have her email me 500 to 700 words and I'll drop it in next issue...
I guess we've really touched a nerve with this skate wife thing...
For the record, my wife is so incredible that she's let me bet everything on this skate mag. As many of you know, I quit the day job back in October...it's 100% concrete wave...
So, this means you better get out there and buy it or advertise, otherwise, she'll kill me! Did I mention she lets me takes the kids skating and I can repair boards on carpet! How about that!

Skate Wife
I have been married to me wife for 13 years and we dated for 8 years prior to that. You can quickly add up the 21 years and see, that if I am a skater, she has been around a lot of skating. That’s a long time of skating friends that meander in and out of our lives.
She missed my earlier teenage years in the late 70’s, when I skated a lot, but she witnessed full on what happens when skaters get that ‘itch’ to skate. She has seen me through many good injuries and fully understands the dangers, as well as the mindset for skaters.
About 4 years ago, I got a strong itch to return to skating. As responsible family and career oriented parents in our late 30’s, getting back on a board is definitely something that most spouses would classify as silly and insane. My wife, on the other hand, simply looks at it from the perspective of it being in my blood. If we travel, she knows that there could be a couple of hours spent looking and skating the foreign terrain. On my first time dropping in a big vert ramp in many years, she was standing on the deck right next to me. Having never peeked over the deck of 12 foot ramp, she said, “this looks pretty high, are you really going to do it?”
She will not get on a board herself, not out of immaturity, but rather out of respect for the ability which knows she does not have. However, she did find her niche in sporting activity. She I both play ice hockey in an adult league. She loves it. She is a captain, as well as a manager for our youngest son’s team.
So there is no big list of injuries to describe how she helped me out each time. There is no chiding me when I limp around a few days after a big hipper or groin pull. There are no snide remarks about living my second childhood when I carry a skatebag to work with me.
She is the awesome supportive skate wife/mom!

Dave, you're wife HAS to be the winner of the skate wife contest! If she still supports you after having to take care of you during all the injuries, she has definitely achieved "angel" status. Personally, mine doesn't understand why I need more than one board. I also get no sympathy for any skate-related injuries. That's why I CAN'T show her your posting. I'd rather not shed light on the injury thing, rather focus on why skating is good for me - the exercise it provides, it's relatively inexpensive, keeps me out of bars and strip clubs, etc. Maybe Zannah should teach classes in skater wifeology? Maybe she could give mine a call?

We have many thousand in the UK, Europe and Canada. Both in skate shops and magazine retailers
We also growing our subscriber base and on track to hit 1000 subscribers my mid 2004.
We are increasing skate shop distribution in the US.
Barnes and Noble get about 2500 copies....I wish they'd take more...but I am competing with 7000 other titles.
Remember, a year ago, we were at 10,000 copies.

Dave that's a perfect situation. On the FloridaSkater guestbook we've been talking about how to sway the wives more toward what Dave's talking about. We even came up with a concept of Skate-Wife of the year getting a day at the spa and a shopping certificate, just to motivate them to chill. (I know, it sounds like a concept from The Man Show.)If CW could publish some examples like Hackett's maybe it could influence the rest of our wives by them seeing it in print.

Seriously bro, CONGRATS! I was fortunate enough to meet you and your wife last year at the first Deathrace. Class acts, the two of you.
To all our wives, girlfriends, etc. etc. Peter Pan is alive and well, and in many forms and he skates! Thanks for the support.
Dave, I've got a new Right Kidney permish pool here in Texas. You and the boys are welcome.

My wife is the ULTIMATE. In the last four years we have been together, I have taken her to the gnarliest pools, parks, pipes, slalom events, up and down the coast and across the country; the whole time putting up with all of my grisely skate bros(such as Olson, Reuler, Duane, and even JBoy.) Never once have I heard her complain or act like she wanted to leave. She is ALWAYS down for the cause. This is "TROOPER" status. Beyond that, she has been there for me through countless injuries (due to riding radically and taking many chances a man my age probably would not do) such as; ACL operation ($15,000.), broken Index in Karate tournament ($1,500.-no surgery on that one - Thank god I won that one!); broken little finger (at the Deathrace =$5,000. = emergancy surgery); a broken arm riding Clairmont pool ($3,500. - again, no surgery); and finally this year a busted foot ($15,000. = majory surgery) and 3 WEEKS IN BED, AND THREE MONTHS ON CRUTCHES!! (I never heard her once complain even after running up and down the stairs of our 2 story house serving me breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday while I recovered. (This is where the "ANGEL STATUS" is realized) It doesn't stop there either. I needed endless hours of massage, and loving healing energy which she provided without hesitation on a moments notice. Can you say "GODDESS STATUS"? When my friends come over to my house they usually trip on the hundreds of vintage decks in our collection - as she loves for me to collect them and appreciates their value. She usually likes to make sure that all my friends are welcomed into our home with the warmest of welcomes and hospitality one could ever imagine, and this is what I call "DEVINE LOVE STATUS"...Those are just some of the reasons why I love her so much...She is THE ANGEL SKATE GODDESS OF DEVINE LOVE! I Love you Zannah! And I hope that everyone reads this post to their girlfriends, fiance's, lovers, and wifes...so they too can become (and be treated like)...AN ANGEL GODDESS OF DEVINE LOVE
