Thanks Haim for the comments...
It's interesting working on a magazine because the process is truly one of always pushing things forward. I want people to open up each new issue and wonder "what the hell will concrete wave do next?" I want to duplicate the feeling you used to get from SkateBoarder when it was greatly anticipated...and certainly, if I can ever get to the quality of Surfer's Journal (that mind blowing "holy crap" factor!), then I know I will have succeeded in my quest.
It is a journey...everyone who reads Concrete Wave or is involved with editorial or advertises (and hell, even those who SHOULD be advertising, but don't) realizes we are all in this together. A niche magazine is really about community and dedication to a cause or passion. It's not about loading it up with hair gel and video game ads...
That's just my take...We want to surprise you with skate stuff...nothing else.

Detailed Feedback on Latest Issue

I've been trying to get to this for several weeks now. Finally found time. I’ve now been through the latest issue of CW several times and have thoroughly enjoyed it. While I recognize that this MAY be a niche magazine, it is about MY niche. The following are my thoughts and feedback. I’m no editor and don’t even know what leading and kerning is, but I do know what excites me as a skater for life who lives part of his passion through his magazines, or at least the ones that speak to him, such as Concrete Wave. The goal of my comments is not to criticize or tear down, but to offer ideas that I believe, IMOHO, would make CW even better.
I was into the new “My Turn” column. It’s always cool to get to “meet” other skateboarders who share the stoke and to hear their skate related stories. I think the next CW t-shirt offering should feature Claudel's phrase, "You don't stop skateboarding because you get old. You get old because you stop skateboarding." I’m sure we could also come up with a few witty phrases for “mature” skaters for shirts and bumper stickers. Like “I’ll give up my skateboard when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.”
I like the photos of great skate spots like Skatopia because they fuel the fantasy machine. I think some of these pictures could be improved if there was more activity/action in them (e.g. page 67). Having a rider on the wall or grinding the coping adds a great deal to the photo's impact on the reader, even if it is from a distance and intended to feature the spot and not the rider. This not only makes it more interesting and exciting to view, but also provides more information about the relationship between the skater and the spot and what it would be like to ride there.
One more thing that I’d love to see is a few sequential shots, like of Jay’s laybacks or of the Coleman slide. I realize that this may not always be possible, since you often are working with the material people submit to you and sequentials require specific equipment to capture.
Keep up the great work. I’m looking forward to the next issue, and the one after that, and the one after that…

that's a nice issue Stan...our first real breakthrough issue...
however, it's interesting to note that the opening spread has been copied by the folks at Thrasher magazine...
yep, as I predicted, the big boys would start copying various things they see in CW...
if you have the ability, scan that opening spread of the guy riding the weird egg shaped thing (double page spread) and then see if you can scan the January issue opener of Thrasher.
I'll admit, their photo is of a much larger skate star (Rick McCrank) and the photo is sharper (we didn't have the ability to scan at 14,000 dpi back then...now we do!)
but...at least you can say....... "I saw that photo in Concrete Wave months ago!" Of course the other thing I say is at least they're not showing another pic of a railslide or someone flying down a set of stairs or doing something on a ledge...

Hey! Sno ball and "A Woman" - you two know the deal, I'm glad you're stoked on skating. I've seen a few guys at skateparks make negative comments about women/girls skating, I usually tell them "Are you out of your f-wording mind, do you just want a relationship with a piece of furniture?" I think both of you have your heads screwed on straight compared to most people. Do either of you race slalom? You should, we need more women at the races. My wife doesn't ride but she appreciates that I do, Best wishes that you should find the same - Paul Howard

Craigo, a couple of the points you made definitely resonated for me. My wife has also joked about mid-life crisis, calling my skateboard, "My little red sports car." At the same time, she is aware that this is my therapy and supports and respects it. For this I love her. Skateboarding helps me cope with the stresses and pressures of difficult long work hours and multiple personal demands, which I face daily. It's the one thing I have that I do just for me and no one else. It challenges me, excites me and energizes me. It's great exercise and it's FUN!
A not to A Woman: If the guys you meet can't relate to your skateboard passion or even dis you because of it, then sounds to me like they're the wrong guys. So glad to hear you've got one of the right ones now. It's tough when good apples are so rare and you keep running into bad ones.

It's too bad that some of the guys you dated were jerks about your skating. Unfortunately, there are so many people out there who don't understand why we skate because of our age, our gender, or whatever. If these people are open-minded, then educate them. If not, then move on. Skateboarding is a part of each of us. To ask us not to skate is to ask us to not be ourselves. When I was 14, my stepfather referred to it as a "phase" I was going through. That "phase" has lasted now nearly 29 years. My wife has called it a "mid-life crisis." The fact of the matter is that I am skating more now because: 1) I am no longer in school and have more time (I finished a Master's in Engineering in 1997) 2) My two girls are now 4 and 7 and are easier to take care of, and 3) There are more places to skate now than ever. I try to skate about once a week as my schedule allows. I am actually skating better now than I did over 20 years ago. I am getting airs over coping and performing grinds in 10' deep pools, which I could never do until very recently. Most of the guys I skate with are MUCH better than I am, so for me, its a big deal. Skateboarding is like therapy to me, it makes me feel better after I skate since I get to release the tensions and pressures of life in a physical way. It provides exercise. It is much cheaper than MOST other hobbies out there. It is a great anti-drug. Your new boyfriend must understand this since he participates in a related sport. Great! I hope that he makes you happy, I know that skateboarding will. Take care of yourself, and skateboarding will take care of you. It's kept me fairly sane over the years.
Later!

As a female skater, the most consistent reason non-skating males complain about is the fact that while skating, there are so many OTHER men around.
One word: Insecurity.

To a woman. I notice that it appears to me that many people in general are simply lame. Attached to the TV, Seinfeld, Friends, whatever. I am stoked you skate, it is an individual thing, skating together or solo, each and all are in our own little space (well except for slalom cross when two riders want the same space). Maybe it is a sign of the times, I have noticed that more woman are riding snowboards and skateboards. I been on lifts when I was like a minority guy and I am over forty and hapily married. women in general seem to listen better, learn better and want to go for it. Hell, I spent better part of a day in Home Depot and there were more women there and I notice there usually are more women there too. Society is changing. Keep skating, have fun, Life is too short, keep your knees healthy.

Thanks for that input. I hope you two can live as happily as my wife and I do.

I apologize now for the longest post ever and I know the forum has moved on to Father/son stuff.
Perhaps its feelings of inadequacy that have prevented me from posting earlier. Like all of you, I read concrete wave and this forum. For the most part you are all reading articles about things and times you are familiar with. Seeing as I am about half the age of the men posting here I’m relating to the mag and your posts through the fascination of then and now. For the minutes I spend reading articles and posts I’m living small bits of history that would without this mag and mike's books be out of reach to me. Playing fair- so..some of your wives sound like my mother. Actually most of your wives sound a lot better than my mother(at times). I’ve been skating a couple of years now and from what I understand, when someone loves you, the pain they experience through you’re injuries is far worse than the pain you are actually in. Four fractures in the past 14 months and I’ve never seen a woman(my mother) in so much pain. Seeing as I haven’t quite hit the age or time where marriage or anything that serious is a possibility, I’m “dating”. So you’d think that any guy would be stoked to date a chick that skateboards. Well au contraire guys! It’s been such a pain in the ass that at one point I never wanted to go on a date again. I’ve been on dates with guys who laughed at the fact that I skateboard and the possibility that I might be good at it. I’ve seen guys who have felt threatened by skateboarding because they convince themselves I like skateboarding more than I like them(which is true in many cases). There are some that can’t possibly understand why I’d drive 4 hours to skate on some country road I heard was a sick ride. So what appears to be so great about all your wives is that, yes they may not skateboard themselves(if they do then all the better), but they understand that it’s something you do and love and that if you love it they can incorporate it into their lifestyles. In the search for a man, because ultimately we seem to spend our whole lives searching for a mate(I think I read that somewhere), I at one point(after I was so tired of what I thought was wasting my time) decided that I will only date a man who has an interest in something(anything, as long as they are passionate about it). At my age many of the men I meet seem to be..well lame..and bored, with no hobbies, and believe that the solution to all their problems is a women. Which is quite sad and frankly quite annoying. So where to meet men? is always a problem. By the way, this is sad but true, I met more men when I was injured than I think I have met in my entire life. Now women love to complain about the lack of men. Which as you can see I have just done. BUT a little complaining got me where I am now. I’m with a man who is more than totally supportive of my skateboarding. Not just supportive but genuinely interested and listens to me talk and talk about skateboarding, and genres of skateboarding he never knew existed. He understands when I take last minute trips all over to skate places because, well because I feel like it(he has yet to be invited with me..but soon). I figured he able to listen to me because he himself is as passionate, if not more passionate, about snowboarding. And I myself can listen to him talk about snowboarding for hours, and I think its awesome. He’s cool with the injuries and doesn’t nag about them(really sad to see me hurt, but loves the idea of having to take care of me, and me being somewhat dependant on him.)
All your wives sounds absolutely lovely.

Or you could do a "Father & Son" type of feature. Guys like Dan Murray, Curt Kimbal, Arab, I'm sure there's lots of legends out there that have kids that are rippers. Andrew rips, and it's a pleasure to skate with him and his Dad. This type of article would get passed around the household to all family members a little more, and influence more people to skate. Plus it's a good tie-in to the old school/new school thing.

The Young gun at Olliewood is Corey Smalley. A great choice for a Young Guns article. He is at most 11 and routinely wins the 12 and under division in about every contest he enters. He is amazing! It may be ego but I think a big reason Corey went toward old school style is from the influence of my son Andrew (17). They were on the same skate team for years. I remember him (Cory) ripping street and Andrew getting him to try more vert... which he took to like he was born to do it. My wife and Andrew invited him to come to Olliewood knowing that Alan would welcome him will no vibe... and that the ramp would blow his mind! Since then Corey has been a Tuesday night regular. While Andrew and I haven't been there in weeks. Sorry bout that Alan! Corey's skating can be explosive with a maturity in skill and style well beyound his years. I'll have to check back in my archives to see what video or photos I may have, but I know his dad video tapes his stuff religously with a high end DV. I may be bias but I think another great Young gun would be my son Andrew. I could say more but I'll let photos and video do the talking
