Just had a parking garage session with a few newbies and a couple of old vets.... Set up some cones, practiced some slides, carved a few lines.... When the snow clears, we'll be bombing some hills.... This summer's race calender is gonna be bigger than last season.... Lotsa fresh faces asking me to try my equipment.... New parks popping up every summer.... Wicked new gear being developped.... Can watch skating on t.v. fairly regularly.... More skaters making a bit of money doing something they love.... Contests and travelling shows/demos.... Concrete Wave.... Punk rock still vibrant and intense... I'm a bit older and can afford to buy gear and incorporate skating into holidays and travel.... Skate shops in every town....
My body ain't what it was when I was 18, but other than that, this is a great time to be a skater.
Keep it rollin......

i live in a small town in Oregon, back when skate boarding was getting big in the late 70s,it took a few years to find us.the local 7-11 was the only skate shop with in 20 miles.yep skate shop.it sold Contintal boards, wheels and i think contintal trucks.so while you were buying your Skaterboarder mag, you could get a slurrpy and check out the latest in Contintal skate gear. plus it was open 24 hours a day. later.

you know what? it's friday...it's freezing...there's not a chance I'll be out skating for another 3 months and yet...I'm happy.
Why?
Because despite an overwhelming monumental task of trying to foster change within skateboarding, something just dawned on me today...
IT ACTUALLY IS HAPPENING....
yes, I can honestly say that this movement has wings and it's going to emerge as one of the greatest things to happen to skateboarding.
I have no intention of selling out...I have no intention of selling out those around me...I furthermore have no intention of selling out further generations of skaters....
We represent the core skate community and despite the lack of acknowledgement in other mags or videos, we exist and we are flourishing. I just want to say THANKS...thanks to Dave Hegstrom, to Rene Carrasco, to Mike Moore, to Buddy Carr, to Nick Krest, to Greg Stubbs, to Warren Bolster to Bill Danforth and the dozens of advertisers, subscribers and supporters that have seen the mag grow....
What can I say, but you are a part of a universal groove...a new movement within skateboarding that will change its direction.
It's Friday, I'm sitting here listening to music, responding to email and happy with the knowledge that things are progressing...
now, for those in warmer climes, get out there and take a ride for those who are stuck inside!

This IS the BESTEST of the BEST time to be skating, You got that right Heggy! Hey, how's it go'in? I'm still digging that 12" all wood you sent me,kids at the skatepark can't stay off of it, especially the butt-boarding wee little tots that roll in the drop-ins. Later - Paul H.
MB - There's a popsickle stick culture store here in town with an owner who could and used to skate but has become a little too cool to do so anymore, some grommet in the store was heard singing the Clash "Nate don't skate but we think he should, nate wants to be a girly clothes salesman", perfect match for your current topic. I just want to clarify that Skaterbuilt is proud and honored to be affiliated with a truly "historic" skate publication like CW. We are stoked on CW! And we intend to promote CW as we always have. MB is doing an excellent job and I commend him and his team of contributors, photogs, etc. for their efforts. Skaterbuilt is growing right along side CW-and things only look to get even better and better (for us all). There are kids out there like Arab's son Nathan Groff and even younger that are learning how to carve up bowls in all the new skatepars sprouting up throughout the US and the world. My son Kyle is less than 2, and he skates my pigs around the sidewalk everyday-things are good, life is great, and skateboarding is killer! So, let's all enjoy this wonderful time-it's the best time EVER to be a skater.

It might not be too far off. Talked with a low level manager of a couple of 7-11's here in the Dallas area (Southland Corp., 7-11's parent company is based here) and gave her a copy of the mag today. Said she will get in touch with the purchaser and try to push it through. At the very least she is going to put me in touch with some head honcho types to show them the mag. Keep you fingers crossed!
MB - I'll call you tonight.

My Two cents

CW - I like it because it is the ground level amatuer photographer/writer magazine for/from everybody rather than a fully staffed magazine like some other magazines that want to only show everyone only what they dictate is supposed to be skating. Though getting some of the old names on board for photographers will be awesome. Bill Danforth - I saw him years ago at a big pro demo, he pretty much blew off the big showoff opportunity and hung out with wee little grommets in the parking lot and showed them where to put their feet and how to "tic-tac" across the pavement. That was the most "core" thing I've ever seen any pro skater do, I respect that a lot.
Bill Wahl - He does'nt need my defense but whilst I'm blabbing, even though we don't exactly agree on the CW topic all the time, nor really know each other at all I had just barely met him at Morro Bay this year, I was in need of a riser for the hybrid course and he just gave me one and refused to let me pay him for it. He's not sugar-coated but a good guy to have in your corner, Thanks BW.
Dang I can't wait to start racing again! Blah Blah Blah, Later- Paul Howard

well, a famous Canadian once said...the medium is the message...
that's why we don't run lots of shoe or clothing ads (actually, we've decided not to run that many...if they ever come...we'd take an ad for Neil Blender's shoes, or an ad from Vans, because they've been at it for so long, but not much else would fit in with our agenda)
our agenda is very simple...showcase a wide variety of skateboarding and speak to an audience that wants more soul within skateboarding and less marketing hype.
And by the way, if Larry Flynt is reading this, no, the magazine is NOT for sale...You've already owned one too many skateboard mags already!

They were all commenting on how they had bought this new magazine called "Concrete Wave" and how they thought the magazine was really cool.

ASR, Bill Danforth, Bill Wahl, snow, etc. etc

Well, I'm back from ASR and let me tell you, there's nothing more exciting than to go from 65 to 20 degrees...yikes!
It is DAMN cold up here. The surf in Carlsbad looked amazing by the way, but there was much work to do...so no surf for me!
For those of you who don't know, CW flew Bill Danforth down to the ASR show. We figured since he's on the cover, it might be a fun idea. It turned out great!
Bill Danforth was gracious in everyway. When you think about how much this guy means to skateboarding and how many people I saw come up to him and say how much they admired him, you'd think his ego would be huge. NO WAY. Bill is one of the most down to earth and remarkable people I have ever met. He is one of the best ambassadors of skateboarding ever. He's nice to everyone and is just a real pleasure to be around. You can read about his life in this issue...it's 9 pages...but I don't think it was enough space! There are more stories to tell.
ASR was very subdued this year....folks are freaking out...there is lot's of inventory, concerns about China, worries about Surf dominating skate....traffic was way down...it just felt everyone has scaled back. Still, the bright spots remain - longboarding is still holding its own and growing.
Big Brother collapsing was the talk of the show...people were a little shocked. For me, being a publisher, I guess Larry Flynt looked at the numbers and figured, "cut the losses" Still, you'd think he would have put the thing up for sale. I feel badly for the staff...the rumor at the show was that the advertisers knew things were going south before the BB staff. Shame.
As for CW, it looks like things are unfolding as they should. We are on track and I know that folks will see a difference in this issue. As for the fact that Bill Danforth gets 9 pages and Jay Smith gets 4..well, we are always changing things with the mag...you will now see much more in depth interviews with folks who grace the cover. WIll Jay Smith and Duane Peters be in the mag again? Absolutely.
As for moving to the USA, that's not going to happen Bill. You bloom where you are planted and right now, I am planted in Toronto. While I might not have my finger on the pulse of everything that goes down in California, my outlook is worldwide. This means that I will definitely showcase all types of skateboarding, from all over the world.
As this is as open forum, Bill is free to post his opinions. And of course, you are free to reply to them.
The bottom line for me is this: CW exists. It is progressing and it is providing people with the different coverage of skateboarding. It is also building a global skate community.
I have come back from ASR with new ideas, new advertisers and even more of a resolve to create the greatest skate magazine I can. Next up...the buyers guide.
