Mind you... the top 3 slalom places went to guys who DIDNT do downhill in the afternoon. So there!

as far as just the slalom goes...
as i understand it the slalom is a ukssa event with entry fee payable directly to ukssa. so i would hope that all the paid up members get an automatic entry, and anyone else wishing to race either joins or pays 20quid.

I like to know that money made from events end up in the governing bodies of the sports like UKSSA money goes towards timing and other gear, Longleat sounds like a money making opportunity for individuals and or companies so i'll save my cash and put it towards racing folk of all abilities where my dosh goes on gear for future events or promoting the stuff i like to do.

I think at times invitaional only events certainly have clear advantages. having said that though, I would be dissapointed if I woke up tommorrow and every event was invitational. I think in general we don't have the numbers to make events invitational, however last summer at some of the downhill races, altburon in particularly, there were simply too many people there to run the race properly, maybe imposing an upper limit by invitations would have been a better idea in this scenario?
There's always the aspect of safety as well, for downhill especially I like to know that the other three people in my heat are competent, I know we all have to start somewhere but sometimes a bit of restraint is better for everyone.
Essentialy I suppose the odd invitaional event is a good thing, they make good "prestige" events where you can guarantee a high quality of riding, which I think is what our sports need at the moment

Hey guys - Just to clarify: The Longleat event is free to enter, there is no entry fee. We do have to limit the numbers of competitors in street luge and skateboarding and slalom to 62 of each from around the world simply because we do not have the infrastructure to accomodate more numbers, and also to keep the safety issues well in hand (we have a health and safety inspector adivising us, and Longleat has strict requirements we have to follow if we are to be allowed to race on the hill at all). HOWEVER, there will be a consolation event for non-qualifyiers, so that we give as many locals as possible a chance to race the hill.

i would totally agree with the fact that you have to be invited into an event goes against the event its self. and not allowing new people to come and try it out is really not on i think, how else are newbies ment to get into the sport properly when you cant even enter into the competition even though the hill might be your local run and you now it like the back of your hand, think its all gone to pot myself but hay i ride to have fun anyway

I've been pondering about this race.
Not to sure if I like the idea of 'invite only' then being asked to pay £30 to enter. At least thats how I think i'd pitch it if I organised a comp.
I'm heading to thinking its either 'invite only with no entry fee' or 'open'.
I'd love to know what others think. Personnally if its invite only, and some of the guys I skate with wernt invited then a lot of our potential audiaence is expresselly excluded.
I am still working on a race or two at a theme park near London. The plan is to have free entry for entrants, and free family tickets to the attraction. SOunds fair to me. After all the skaters would be an 'attraction'. (er didnt sound right did it?) Even if the entry fee had to be , say £20 at least the skater and family will get £100 or so worth of value, possibly a happy spouse and kids, and also more supporters cheering us on.
My view is that if a race can truly justify limiting numbers (which I doubt) then many skaters wont bother coming to only watch. And a big part of why I skate is to be with chums. And beat them!

Anyone else want to sign up for a Luge lesson sometime at Gurston? I've seen some newbies try it at Gurston, and it looked fun.

Sorry to hear the news from Jonny.
If Longleat does go on it will be a UKSSA event, unless there is a problem that I do not agree to. It will be invitation but only if we get more than 72 entries (unlikely). 32 will race and all can take part in timed events. If it is UKSSA all members can skate. It is unlikely to have a newbie (free) race for first timers.
Due to changes I can not comment until I know more, just keep it penciled in.
